A graduate from Illinois Wesleyan University, Gabriella has earned her degree in Violin Performance and is currently attending the Ohio State University working towards a Masters in String Pedagogy.

Details ***
Each student is expected to attend each lesson scheduled with all materials prepared over the week. Students are expected to practice no less than 5 days each week. The student must be engaged and active in each lesson, music is so exciting! It is highly encouraged to participate in local orchestras and chamber music programs as well as attend concerts available in the area. These events are tremendous learning opportunities!
Although I am not a "strict" teacher, I do adjust my expectations to each student and do expect each student to make progress from lesson to lesson. Within the first few months together, I can assure better posture, a more comfortable playing experience and strong technical foundations. I promise to customize a suitable lesson plan to each student in my studio to ensure they receive the best learning experience possible.

We will meet on the OSU campus and a stand will be provided.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would provide music copies along with articles I would have them read and objects to help technique (i.e. a rhythm egg). I would expect the student to have their own instrument and accessories, i.e. shoulder rest, at home stand, rosin, etc.

Exceptionally focused, extremely detailed, and a stickler for perfection, are some of the attributes that come to mind when I think of Gabriella.

I was hesitant to move forward with Gabriella when I first discovered her on takelessons.com. Being an adult learner, I was under the impression that the age of the instructor determined their skill-set and ability to teach. Not so! To say I have improved with Gabriella is an understatement. What I learned from her in the 10 months we've worked together has progressed me to a level I could never have achieved with my former instructor.

Gabriella is not intimidated by my age and doesn't let any intonation errors, posture slouching, poor bow-hold, etc., go unsaid. She is very good at constructively pointing out errors without sounding harsh, or critical.

She is wise beyond her years. She is very mature and is truly passionate about the violin.

Ella is very knowledgeable, patient, and thorough violin teacher. She is working with my 10 year old who is under the autism spectrum. Ella is very patient and has been doing an excellent job teaching my son how to play at a pace he can handle. Originally from New York City, I started playing drums when I was 10 years old and studied with studio/Broadway drummer Roger Mancuso. After graduating from Ohio University, I studied and was managed by the famous studio drummer/author Gary Chester. As a full-time working musician I have played on many national commercials, Broadway, off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway shows. I was signed for three years to Carrere Records, a subsidiary of Warner Bros./Reprise Records. I have toured Europe and most of the USA with acts such as Luther Allison, Johnny Winter, Big Bill Morganfield, Bo Diddley, Joey
Dee, Gary US Bonds, Zoot Sims, Jeremy Steig, Bobby Lewis, Alex Chilton (From The Box Tops), Eddie Brigati (From The Young Rascals), Johnny Rivers, Little Anthony (From The Imperials) and many more.

I also founded the Columbus, Ohio band The Drifter Kings. Whose debut CD, "Diamonds On The Desert Floor", was produced by Alligator recording artist Michael Hill. The CD was nominated by the Blues Foundation of Memphis, Tennessee as a top-5 finalist at the 2011 International Blues Challenge and has been receiving airplay on stations across North America, South America, and Europe as well as being honored as a €œpick to click€ on Sirius/ XM€™'s B.B. King€™s Bluesville€. It was also featured as a winner of Blues Revue Magazine'€™s €œSponsor the Bands Contest€ in the May/ June 2011 issue.

I have been teaching since 1978 and many of my students have gone on to pursue professional music careers. I am a very well-rounded musician and teacher, experienced in many aspects of musical training and performance. I have worked with every age level, from the beginner to advanced student, in one-on-one as well as classroom settings. I am patient and will bring out the best in my students. You will definitely benefit from my years of musical experience.

*** Lesson Details ***
Our musical experience together will be fun and educational. You will learn the basics of drumming: rudiments, chart reading and complete independence. Lessons will be tailored to each individual student's needs, abilities and interests. Handouts, lesson books and videos will be incorporated in the curriculum.

These lessons will cover the drumming skills needed for playing all musical genres including jazz, blues, rock, pop and world music. Based on my years of experience in the studio and on the road, I will also offer advice on starting a band if desired, types of equipment appropriate to various musical genres. and practical skills for entering the music business.

My teaching style is structured but flexible. The student will learn at their own pace. As with any course of study, the more effort you put into it, the more you will benefit. Let's get started!

My son has been learning piano with Mr. Allen for about two months. My son loves his piano class. Mr. Allen is very patient and encouraging with kids. He knows how to correct kids' mistakes without hurting their feelings and challenge them properly so they can make progress. He understands kids' mind very well. We were very glad that we chose Mr. Allen as our piano teacher.

Accomplishments

As a high school senior, under the tutelage of OSU Professor Emeritus and world-renowned pianist George Haddad, I performed the first movement of Shostakovich'™s Second Piano Concerto with the chamber orchestra.

I performed different self-composed pieces at seven OSU Composers'™ Workshops and won the Audience Favorite Award at the Johnstone Woodwinds Composition Competition in 2012. My Senior Composition Recital was performed on October 25, 2012. It showcased several of my three-movement works: string quartet, clarinet solo, set of classical songs for piano and voice, set of pop songs for piano and voice. Interspersed with these were two solo piano pieces and a duet for piano and violin.

My background makes me a knowledgeable and effective tutor. I was valedictorian at Delaware Hayes High School in 2009 and received OSU'™s Maximus Scholarship based on my ACT and SAT scores.

About Amy

Are you interested in learning piano, or do you have a child who is? I can't wait to help you turn this desire into reality! My name is Amy, and I am a piano teacher who specializes in teaching children, though don't let that sway you: I do enjoy teaching any age. I descend from a long line of musicians (both my mother and grandmother were piano teachers) and have played piano for 21 years, studying with a private instructor for 13 of those. I received my BFA at Goddard College (’14) and my MFA at Boston University (’16).

Over the past five years I have taught piano to students of all ages
and levels in both Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Boston, Massachusetts. All of my students have the opportunity to share their talents in recitals and small group lessons, as well as take part in Royal Conservatory assessments if they choose. Teaching piano is my passion–I take it very seriously, and I guarantee you a quality music education if you should choose to take lessons with me. I have recently relocated to Columbus, thus I am looking forward to building a teaching practice here. I look forward to meeting you!

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:
One of the wonderful (and obvious) benefits of private instruction is that each student’s unique abilities and shortcomings can be brought into clear focus and addressed. I am highly skilled at encouraging students through a careful balance of praise and constructive criticism. I make sure they are aware of (and take pride in) their strengths so that when challenging moments do arise, they are motivated to do the work. These challenging moments are the ones in which growth occurs, and I embrace such learning opportunities wholeheartedly. Under my tutelage, students will learn that when they work hard, they get amazing results.

I maintain high expectations for my students, constantly reminding them that it’s the quality (not the quantity) of their playing that counts. It is much more important to me that a student learns to play one piece well rather than ten pieces poorly! This is because, when it comes to piano, there is no race to the finish line. I believe in taking however much time is necessary to help a child understand a concept—we might spend the majority of a lesson on it if we have to. Learning must be done at the child’s own speed. I think children benefit enormously from having 100% of my attention during lessons; they will never need to try and “catch up” with other students.

A SAMPLING OF METHOD BOOKS I USE:
Beginner: Tales of a Musical Journey Book 1, Piano Safari Books 1 + 2, Christopher Norton’s MicroJazz, Bastien Piano Literature Book 1, Royal Conservatory Series Preparatory Books A & B and Book 1

Intermediate: Piano Safari Book 3, Royal Conservatory Series Books 2-6, Bastien Piano Literature Books 2-4

Advanced: Royal Conservatory Series Books 7-10, Bastien Piano Literature Books 5-6, Early Advanced Classics to Moderns

LESSONS:
Lessons occur weekly. For young beginners, I recommend 30 to 45 minute lessons. Upper-elementary and middle school students should enroll in 45 minute lessons. High school students and adults should enroll in 45 to 60 minute lessons. (A note on lesson time: while 30 minute lessons seem to have become standard for most young students, I have recently come to the conclusion that this is simply not enough time, even for children at the beginning level. After the first six months of lessons, I encourage most young students to “graduate” to 45 minute lessons. They will receive an official award from me for this accomplishment, therefore it is viewed as a positive thing!)

Lessons are fun experiences in which children are engaged in a variety of activities (not just sitting at the piano). The majority of the lesson will consist of working on new and in-progress pieces and technical exercises, but other activities include: improvisation, learning about music history through videos and teacher demonstration, ear-training, playing music-related games, practicing rhythm by marching and/or using the hand drum in my studio, using music flashcards, discussing the child’s music goals, and more.

STRENGTHS MY STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP:
Posture & Hand Position: students are coached to demonstrate exemplary posture and hand position when at the piano. Development of this skill is absolutely vital to having the ability to play more complex pieces later on.

Rhythm & Counting: this is the foundation of music, so I make sure all students have a solid understanding of counting before moving forward using rhythm cards, the metronome, the hand drum, marching, and other fun games!

Music Theory: having a working knowledge of music theory is useful to every musician. The more advanced a student becomes, the more important it be able to distinguish musical patterns and to communicate musical ideas with the teacher and with other musicians. Students will learn music theory right along with learning to play the piano.

Good Practice Habits: practicing at home is the ONLY way to make lessons worthwhile. It MUST be taken seriously. I will work with parents and students to come up with a doable practice plan, and I will talk to students about the correct way to practice. In addition, I motivate my young students with a reward chart that allows them to pick a prize when they reach important milestones.
