Tom works at the elementary, secondary and post-secondary levels as an adult education instructor providing English instruction to classes or individual students.

As an ESL teacher, developing a curriculum he takes an overall approach to English study that focuses on a specific aspect of language use, such as life skills, literacy, or vocational and workplace English competencies. Both approaches involve teaching his students basic English skills, such as listening, reading, writing and speaking.

The Pedagogical Foundations Of EnglishCentral

I just finished 5 lessons with Mark and it was just what I needed to help me improve my speaking skills. He assigned homework each week (the reason I initially chose him) that was based on our lessons. It pushed me to grow. I found him to be quite competent, gentle with correction, and pretty funny. You'll enjoy him!

I focus on speech fluency, it doesn't matter if you memorize vocabulary but don't have the confidence to speak the words you took the time to study. I practice with the basics of grammar because I want you to be comfortable saying the first thing that pops into your head, we can work on building more advanced skills later.

During my years there, I traveled quite a bit - including to Antarctica! - and took part in many science outreach activities with young students. While doing a Masters in planetary geoscience at Brown University (Providence, RI), I gained field experience in Iceland and used it as a research analog to past climate conditions on Mars.
