Welcome to my profile! I provide a warm and encouraging environment for students to make the mistakes necessary for learning an instrument and exploring their musical creativity. My passion for music has inspired me to pursue teaching and performance professionally in order to help others achieve their musical dreams.

My ultimate goal is for my students to gain all the skills necessary for creating meaningful musical experiences for themselves. Specifically I try to help them gain clean technique, a pleasing and expressive tone, basic understanding of music theory, and enough knowledge of music history to play with appropriate expression. I try to accomplish these goals by clearly explaining careful and deliberate practice techniques that remove the stress often associated with daily practice. Students will reap the benefits if they a
re committed to a regular practice schedule, are attentive during lessons, ask questions, and are honest with themselves about what is and is not working.

I began my teaching career in college while earning a Bachelor's in Music from Southwestern University (magna cum laude). I currently play as a soloist and with groups including AURORA: Trio for Flute, Harp, and Cello, the Shimmer Flute Choir, and Sounds of Silver Flute Quartet. I am also an active member of the Music Teacher's National Association and volunteer coordinator of the Houston Flute Club.

Although classically trained I also enjoy classic rock and appreciate music from other cultures as well.

I frequently write arrangements for flute choir and other ensembles, and so I can help students who want to learn more about arranging and composition.

In addition to the flute I also have experience with the piccolo, alto, and bass flute. I love performing and I share my passion for music with my students.

*** Lesson Details ***

Flute Lessons:

I offer lessons that cover just about every aspect of playing the Western concert flute. Students can expect to become well-rounded musicians who are knowledgeable about flute technique, tone, music theory and history. I use a combination of the Rubank Method and Flute 101 books with handout supplements.

The biggest changes I've seen in my students after a few months is a better understanding of how to practice efficiently as well as improved tone. Furthermore, every year many of my students earn superior ratings of 1 on their UIL solos.

Every Spring my students and I participate in Flute Fest, a day-long celebration of all things flute, including concerts, masterclasses, and a solo and ensemble contest. A few weeks later we have our annual studio recital where everyone shows off their hard work.

A NOTE ABOUT WOODEN FLUTES

Occasionally I am asked to help students play wooden, non-western flutes. Although the very basic fundamentals are the same, I do not play these flutes and can only offer very limited help.

Piano Lessons:

Piano is not only fun to play for its own sake, but provides a foundation for all music making. Students will learn about proper posture and hand-positioning, note-reading, rhythm, and a little history as well, using the Piano Pronto book series.

Music Theory Lessons:

I can help students of any instrument better understand the fundamental concepts of music theory: scales, intervals, chords, part-writing, etc. Theory lessons take place at the piano to demonstrate concepts. However, students do not have to play piano to take theory lessons. I typically use a combination of the Master Theory curriculum and other handouts, unless the student is already working out of another textbook.

**Online theory lessons** use the same curriculum, but with the screen share feature to help my demonstrations.

Summer Curriculum:

During the summer I offer additional group classes on different subjects, including theory and ear-training. I try something new every year to provide a variety of opportunities for students to learn and grow in their musicianship.

***Tuition Packages***
I have added my own features to the two tuition options TL already offers. I consider the Recurring Schedule a Subscription Package, where clients pay the same amount every month, equal to the value of four lessons, regardless of the number of lessons attended. This guarantees a permanent reservation of your time slot. I call the Schedule-As-You-Go the A La Carte Package, for those who cannot commit to a regular time. There is no reservation of a time slot and you pay for a few lessons at a time. I am happy to answer questions about tuition through the Ask A Question feature!

My studio is located in the front room of my home and includes a music stand, piano, and comfortable chairs in case parents would like to stay for the lesson.

Having recently completed her masters degree in Piano Performance at the University of Redlands, pianist Jina S. holds her private studio in Grand Junction, CO. During the past six years she has been the recipient of the prestigious LeHigh Endowed Piano scholarship, an award based on exceptional talent and pianistic promise, and has held a Graduate Assistantship in Accompanying. She began her musical training at an early age with piano and clarinet and continued through high school, where she participated in marching band playing clarinet, concert band playing French horn, and playing piano in jazz band, while taking piano lessons. Singing lessons

Jina made Kylie feel comfortable during lessons and allowed her to participate in one of her recitals. I feel the lessons taught her how to vocalize and breathe properly and help bring her out of her shell as she is normally kinda shy in a crowd and new people in general.

All lessons take place in a fully operational Digital Recording Studio and dedicated lesson room. Kyle is an amazing guitar coach!! He is patient, flexible, and extremely knowledgeable on all things music. My name is Abby, and I've been playing guitar for about 15 years now. I graduated from Musician's Institute in 2007, and since then, I have had a great deal of experience teaching guitar to kids and adults, both individually and in groups.

I've spent three summers in a row teaching at Camp Jam and Day Jams, and I had the pleasure of being the Camp Jam kids director of the Orange County location in 2008. They were both great experiences . I have spent he last couple summers teaching School of Rock summer camps which was also a really fun time.

I love helping students find their passion for music and the creative process. I have been teaching at my current music school for about two years, and privately for about 6 years.

A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy.

Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni, Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole, L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges, Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief.

Starting in February 2013, Zachary will also be available through TakeLessons for online instruction. Lessons will still focus on energy, breath, and solid technique, so please contact him if you think this venue of instruction will be a good fit!

Regardless of your background, I believe in making lessons fun, encouraging, and accessible. This means that my work with you will, by nature, be incredibly personal and always formulated for your specific musical goals. I will constantly strive to make sure you are comfortable in our work together as we explore singing, speaking, and music theory.

I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. Therefore, I provide a fun and engaging lesson atmosphere, but you need to bring your best as well! We will both be happier with the process if we are equally invested in your growth. We will start with something you already know (an aria, vocal exercise, or excerpt from a song) and work toward singing in your preferred vocal style. For example, classical singers will build their knowledge of English, German, Italian, and French diction and song styles. Additionally, I will always respect and include my student's musical interests.

Along the way, I am happy to address basic music theory ideas. If you prefer, we can also spend additional time reviewing and learning those principles to enrich your musical experience. I will always provide different exercises and ideas to keep your brain active in the singing process.

I believe in whole body, whole spirit singing. As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. If these sorts of things interest you, I am more than happy to incorporate them into our lessons. My personal results with those practices have been incredible, so I am always eager to share.

My personality is outgoing and energetic, so I bring that sort of atmosphere to a lesson. I expect preparedness and readiness on your part to maximize our work together. About Mike
A semi-finalist in the 2013 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, Mike has emerged as a leading up-and-coming voice in jazz today. Releasing 2 studio albums of original compositions with co-leader Josh Moshier, Mike’s groups have been featured on NPR’s nationally syndicated program Jazz Set with Dee Dee Bridgewater. The group has toured throughout the U.S. and South America showcasing their talents. Mike’s composition Jambo won the 2008 International Jazz Composers Symposium’s Best Small Group Composition award. He has been a featured artist with pop & Motown icons including The Temptations and Guster. Mike’s latest project, the Drive Trio, features Grammy award winning bassist Clark Sommers and Jon Deitemyer.

Mike received his B.M. in Jazz Studies and Economics from Northwestern University in 2007, where he studied
with saxophone under Frederick L. Hemke and John Wojciechowski, and he is currently pursuing a MM in music at USC, studying with Bob Mintzer.

Mike taught me everything I know about playing the jazz saxophone. He came to every lesson with great energy and always made me excited about the music with novel ideas for exercises and just the right balance of fun and rudiments. I am not a professional musician, and may never rely on the saxophone for income, but Mike has given me a very deep and permanent appreciation for the music. Thanks to Mike, jazz and the saxophone will always be parts of my life. I cannot recommend him enough as an educator.

Hi! Want to understand how music works? I'm a Berklee College of Music graduate, and my main instrument is violin. I've been a musician for 20 years, and have experience teaching for 7. We can work on music theory, ear training, writing music, reading music, and more! Can't wait to play music with you.

About Carolyn
Hi, I grew up in Northern California in a family of Texan musicians, who knew from the start I'd be a musical trouble maker. From my early days of Suzuki violin, to marching band, and then to bluegrass and Billie Holiday, I make myself musically at home wherever there's a groove. Now a graduate of Berklee College of Music, and an active part of Berklee's American Roots program, I'm a recipient of the Fletcher Bright Scholarship Award, a 2015 Freshgrass Fiddle Competition finalist, and two-time participant in the Acoustic Music Seminar at the Savannah Music Festival. Most recently, my project The Page Turners has been given the 2016 Freshgrass Best Duo Award. I've performed widely at festivals across the United States such as Grey Fox, the Three Sisters Festival, Berkeley Bluegrass Festival and Newport Folk Festival, as well as endeavors
abroad with the Nairobi Symphony. I've performed with many beloved artists, such as Bruce Molsky, Aoife O'Donovan, Joe Walsh, and Darol Anger. I have been teaching all ages and abilities for 7 years, all over the country. My favorite things are cooking, two-stepping, and hanging out with dogs. Carolyn is moving into Austin, TX in the Fall of 2017.
