My goal is to provide insight along your musical path. In addition to preparing for performances and auditions, I encourage spending time on your favorite songs, and enjoy learning with them with you (often by transcribing the material). Bio-

Tom Gershwin is a bandleader, trumpeter, and composer based in Denver, Colorado.

In 2015, Tom was selected to be in KUVO’s 30 under 30 series, which featured young musicians contributing to the jazz scene in Colorado.

​Tom has recorded two full length jazz albums: “Sweet Pastimes”, a duo project featuring classic standards, and “Live at Mighty Fine”, a quintet performing collaborative compositions and improvisations. Tom's current six piece group has been featured at Nocturne, the Five Points Jazz Fe
stival, the Estes Park Jazz Festival, and Dazzle Jazz.

As a freelance trumpeter, Tom has performed and/or recorded with The Temptations, John Batiste, Father John Misty, Chris Potter, One Republic, DeVotchKa, Leftover Salmon, Juno winner Jayme Stone, and Portugal. The Man at venues including Red Rocks Amphitheater, the Blue Note, and City Park Jazz.

​Tom has been a faculty member of the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts (CCJA) since 2016.

​Tom’s professional career began in the United States Army Band, where he performed for 3 years across the Pacific Northwest and Japan. He was promoted to sergeant before receiving an honorable discharge. He received his jazz performance degrees from CU Boulder (undergraduate) and NYU (master’s). At NYU, Tom also served as an adjunct faculty member of the Jazz Department.

I will guide you to your goals. I write my own materials for each student's individual goals. If you want to learn a song and I don't know it, I will learn the song with you, sharing the process. After several months of study, you will have an understanding of not only what to practice, but how and why to practice.

I am interested in teaching you what you need and want to learn so that you achieve your dreams. Please note that I only take serious students who will practice at least 30 minutes every day or 35 a day 6 days a week at home. I would like you to keep a log of how much you practice. This will enable you to make progress through the curriculum as you will be a beginner for the first 3.3 years, an intermediate for the next 3.3 years, and then an advanced student for 3.3 years. I will give you assignments to do over the week, and the next week we will go over them, learn something new and get new assignments. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert!

As a professional brass musician, I have been teaching brass instruments for over twelve years.

Bill is a stand-up guy. My 11-yr-old beginner daughter is happy with her lessons so far and he interacts with me in a friendly and polite manner. My name is Nathan I am a 31 year old husband and father of 3. My wife and I have been teaching music since 2007.

I am an experienced teacher of guitar, drums, and trumpet. My students range from age 6-60.

All lessons will be held at our home studio in Aurora, CO. Our home was built as a recording studio and it's perfect for lessons. Our dedicated, sound-proofed, teaching room includes a large viewing window so the student can be seen by parents while they wait without causing unnecessary distractions for the student. No drop-offs, please.

My teaching methods are based 100% on the student's abilities.
Here is a brief look at what lessons with Nathan B. will look like.

*** Lesson Details ***
Guitar:

Beginning players- I prefer to teach from the Hal Leonard book series. This is a great start for most students. I teach th
e string-by-string approach using simple songs to start. Your first lesson will be a combination of reading notes on a page and reading chords on a chord chart. You will come out of the lesson learning at least 3 notes and one chord. Weekly goals are set and a practice routine is discussed.

Intermediate players- After a quick assessment of your abilities we will discuss your future goals as a player. We could pursue classical guitar with additional lessons in note reading and fingering methods, or we could focus more on chords and strum patterns if you prefer to sing and play your favorite artists.

Advanced players- this is where it gets fun. We go where you want to go. I will provide guidance based on your strengths and weaknesses. We will choose music that can display your strengths, and challenge your weaknesses. Remember, there's always someone better than you!

Drum:

Beginning players- All of my lessons follow my own, proven teaching method. All lessons take place with the student at the drum kit playing 90% of the time. I approach all drum lessons beat-by-beat always with a metronome. My goal for the first lesson is to teach at least one basic pattern. We progress through a series of hundreds of different drum patterns that become increasingly more difficult. Every week is a new opportunity to practice clean technique and improve internal timing.

Intermediate players- After a brief assessment of your abilities we will begin discussing concepts of pattern construction. You will start coming up with of your own patterns and ideas. I will provide guidance for more complex fills and I will give tips to help you figure out the right groove for the right song. Every week is a new opportunity to add another tool to your kit.

Advanced players- come and teach ME something! I'm still working on super triplets and sextuplets in 5/4 time :-)

I also teach trumpet at beginner and intermediate levels. I have prepared many students for tryout pieces (solo, regionals, chair placement, etc). I am a professional trumpet player, singer, arranger and educator based in West Philadelphia. Born into a musical family in Peoria, IL, I began playing cello at the age of two, but eventually was drawn to jazz trumpet and voice, while having a keen sense of music theory and piano. I studied music at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Northwestern University. While at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, I was awarded a FIPSE grant to travel to Brazil and study traditional samba music. While there, I worked as a clinician at Faculdade Cantareira in Brasilia. After CCM, I received my Masters in Jazz Studies from Northwestern University under the tutelage of Victor Goines (tenor saxophonist for Jazz at Lincoln Center) and Brad Mason (Current Musical Director for Blood, Sweat and Tears), during which, I was selected to perform as the “jazz tru
mpet” chair in part of Disney’s highly selective All American College Band.

After graduate school, I moved to the city of Chicago proper. For 3 years, I played trumpet and sang jazz standards most Thursday evenings at the famous Green Mill Cocktail Lounge, one of Chicago’s oldest jazz clubs. In addition to that, I helped start The Syndicate, my hip-hop brass band that offers a blend of funk, R&B and jazz. I also played with other groups such as Four Star Brass Band, and J-Livi and the Party, which released an album in July of 2016 called “Come and Share My Life," whom I still play with.

In addition to playing trumpet, I also am an accomplished classical singer, presently predominantly performing with the Crossing, a Grammy Nominated professional chamber choir conducted by Donald Nally. This 17-18 season, I'm singing with Consprirare, Apollo’s Fire, The Crossing, Vocal Arts Ensemble (Cincinnati), Variant 6, Madison Choral Project, ekmeles (NYC), and Choral Arts Philadelphia. Recently, I made my debut as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Chris Deviney’s “Pat Metheney Concerto.”

I consider myself a very well-rounded trumpeter. I studied classically for eight years before moving out of town for college, where I studied Jazz and lead trumpet under the tutelage of internationally acclaimed trumpeter, Jumaane Smith. As a result of my balanced upbringing on the horn, my skill set includes those necessary to be a successful, versatile player; which in today's world, is a must-have.

Special skills include:
- Extreme Upper Register (Double High C)
- Big Band/Commercial Lead
- Section/Principal Playing (any setting; quintet-to-orchestra; pop/rock section to jazz orchestra)
- some improv

About Sam
A native of West Hartford, CT, Sam Merrill is a 2014 graduate of William H. Hall High School. During his time at Hall, he was a part of the school’s esteemed jazz program, where he played lead trumpet in John Mastroianni’s Concert Jazz Band. Hall’s show, “Pops ‘n Jazz” allowed Sam to work with musicians like trumpeters Tony Kadleck, Michael Mossman, Scott Wendholt, and Jeff Holmes, saxophonist Joel Frahm, pianist Joyce DiCamillo, and many others. Throughout middle and high school, Sam studied privately with Nancy Brown, a renowned trumpeter in the tristate area who helped Sam build a strong foundation on the instrument.

Upon graduating high school, Sam moved to Danbury, CT, where he pursued and obtained a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies at Western Connecticut State University. At WCSU, he studies privately with Dave Scott, and Jumaan
e Smith (lead trumpet player for Michael Bublé and Harry Connick, Jr.). He also held an eight-semester tenure of the lead trumpet chair in the school’s esteemed Jazz Orchestra under the direction of GRAMMY nominated jazz saxophonist Jimmy Greene, and guitarist Jamie Begian; both unbelievable talents and inspirations. Thanks to WCSU’s annual Jazz Festival, Sam has been fortunate enough to share the stage with the likes of pianist Kenny Barron, tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, and most recently, vibraphonist Stefon Harris.

Over the years, Sam was also fortunate enough to build a relationship with Los Angeles studio legend Wayne Bergeron, who has helped further develop his abilities on the trumpet.
A May 2018 graduate of WCSU, Sam just touched down in Nashville, TN, hoping to continue a career as a trumpeter, teacher, composer, and arranger.
