Young artists who aspire to elevate their musical education in the future should expect to have a solid grasp of music theory. A foundation of music theory not only benefits those seeking formal musical education, but also contributes to greater familiarity and learning potential in sight-reading, performance, musical interpretation and a scholarly understanding of musical score.

Students who select these lessons can expect enrichment in theory fundamentals like identifying and labeling chord structures, roman numerals in chordal analysis, harmonic analysis, and score analysis. I structure these lessons as taught by the Music Theory Department at Juilliard, and have extended experience tutoring students in this subject within the School.

About Max

Most recently, I was sponsored by Mr. Josef Frohlich of the Fresh Leaf Charitable Foundation as one of eight pianists worldwide to attend the prestigious Verbier Festival Academy in Switzerland, summer of 2018. I was the sole American and Juilliard pianist to receive the honor, and was featured in

As a parent, I worried that my child wouldn’t receive a truly effective musical education that was tailored to suit his needs and goals. After studying with Max for two years, my twelve year old son has just started his first semester at the Mannes’ School of Music Pre-College Program this Fall. I cannot thank Max enough for his efforts. Before starting lessons with Max, my son had zero interest in piano despite his potential. Max made piano fun, interesting, and worthy of my son’s time. He became an entirely different person! He has studied with the world’s foremost concert pianists and teachers, and he always used his illustrious network to help my son with career opportunities. Though my son now studies in a formal setting, I’m grateful to Max for his help in securing my son’s future. If you are a parent who is unsure of who to entrust your child’s musical development to, please sign up for Max’s lessons. He is the real deal!

Max has been very helpful so far in teaching me the fundamentals of what makes a proficient piano player, from the technical aspects to the mentality one should have. Would Recommend.

Max is a young man with a mature spirit far beyond his years. My wife and I heard him in concert where he gave a beautiful recital of Liszt and Beethoven Sonatas in our hometown of Berlin. I recently visited New York for a business trip, and took the opportunity to speak to this young man who captured my ears with his nearly philosophical performance. After a brief two hour lesson, it was clear to me that the artist had clear vision of a realm that most would disregard as imaginary. I look forward to hearing him again in Europe, and encourage those in New York to take advantage of his services. He will be a major influence on the future of classical music.

My background in music theory makes me capable of tutoring students in a wide range of music theory subjects. Through my extensive studies, I have learned about music theory and its history dating back to the Renaissance era (c. 1400s). My Music Theory Minor from Northwestern University has given me the opportunity to study music theory in many different contexts beginning with simple Roman numeral chord analysis and delving as deep as composing small four-voice fugues. A student who studies theory with me can expect to become an expert at music analysis, beginning with species counterpoint and continuing from there based on the student's subject interests. I am able to personalize the learning materials of each of my students by using different musical examples that I have studied over the fourteen theory courses I have taken so far. I took the AP Music Theory class in high school and received a 5 on the exam and am also able to help tutor students who wish to pass the test.

My daughter really likes Rachel. She feels that Rachel is a good teacher and even in the first lesson, she learned something new that she feels will make her a better trombone player.
Kyler S.
Actually, It is my son who is the beginning trombone student. But he is very happy with Rachel's instruction. She is obviously a very skilled musician, she sets a definite program and expectations for her students, and exhibits great patience as well.

Rachel was patient with my daughter and was helpful not just with the technical piece but helped her to be more confident in herself.

Music Student Face-Off: Memorizers vs. Readers | Which is Better?

As you learn songs and work through your music books, do you memorize the notes? Or do you read along every time you play? In this post, music teacher Vanessa G. discusses the pros and cons to the approaches...   Imagine your teacher gives you a piece of music to study. What's your process? Do you listen to a recording, memorizing the melody and the stylistic aspects before you begin, and then as you play? Or would you sit down and sight read the notes, and perfect it from that star …
