Drum Set; Understanding rhythm and time signature; Djembe, Dun, Dumbek, African Drumming; Tablas, Indian Drumming; Electronic beats and percussion
I have been teaching drum lessons for 15 years and one thing that I have learned throughout the years is that every student is different. I make it my goal to ensure that every student is taught to their needs, desires and inspirations. When I am teaching I don't just go through a checklist, but rather, I search to find what inspires my students. It's important to me that my students are not only motivated to practice, but that they also gain an understanding of how to learn on their own.
I believe that all drumming comes down to solid technique and fundamentals. I can help beginners lay the foundation for their technique, or more advanced students continue to refine their touch, time and expression in all styles of drumming.
Interested drummers will learn the basics, such as beats, measures, time-keeping and different rudimentary exercises that will help you get better. Eventually, as you progress and can figure out different beats, we'll advance to doing fills and even double-bass.
I use a variety of method books for drum set, mallet percussion, and snare drum, depending on the student's level and their area of interest. I also share exercises and approaches that I have picked up over the years from teachers and other sources, and I often create exercises on the spot to address the student's unique needs. A good practice method is a tool that the student can apply to anything they're interested in; it also encourages them and allows them to have more fun.
