I've been playing the bass trombone for about 12 years, and have been teaching it for about 5. I was the TA for Tom Brantley at USF, and taught most of the undergraduate trombonists at some time or another through the 2013-2015 semesters. My goal when giving lessons is to create excitement for the instrument, inspire musical creativity, and inform students (in every experience level) what successful professional players do on a daily basis. My curriculum is set based on the individual player.
I love to play! I have been trained in styles of music such as swing, bebop, and other various jazz/latin styles; operatic, orchestral, and symphonic styles; and consistently maintain a very openminded laid back attitude. I've been playing in the Tampa area for several years now, and have received a masters degree in bass trombone performance from the University of South Florida in 2014.
Although I play many brass instruments, my trombone spends the most time outside of it's case. My very first gig was on the trombone, at the age of 14 (14 years ago). I've developed a warm-up routine using a combination of well-know repertoire and fantastic online resources. Throughout the years I've acquired a large collection of study material. We can work on jazz heads out of the Real Book, orchestral excerpts or classical solos.
Hello! My name is Derek. I've been a brass musician for 15 years. I started my musical journey on the euphonium and trombone. Throughout the years I've had the opportunity to play the trumpet and tuba as well. With the help of good teachers and positive practice habits I was able to be a part of several honor bands, on multiple instruments. I studied euphonium performance at the University of South Florida. Currently, I'm a member of a couple of local bands, play free lance gigs and do some recording work. My teaching style is structured but laid back. I work with my students to create a lesson plan that allows us to reach our goals. Lets make music!
