Valerie B.

Wilmington, DE

About Valerie

Hi there! My name is Valerie. I'm a certified music teacher that loves to see a person grow in their love and ability for music. With 19 years of teaching privately, experience teaching publicly in elementary school music classrooms, enjoying several years as a Kindermusik (preschool music) teacher, and a school year teaching with VSA arts of Delaware (teaching music to those with disabilities), I find it thrilling to see a person of any age & background grow and blossom in their passion for music!

Though I enjoy and have experience at teaching all ages from children to adults, I spec
ialize in teaching ages 5-19. I would describe myself as a preschool/elementary/middle school music teacher that teaches privately. ;) My studio is filled with many smiles, stickers for every accomplishment, and a treasure box of cool prizes for those who are practicing regularly and did a great job in their lesson. Lessons are a time where children can feel like music really is fun and enjoyable to learn and experience!

In addition to being a teacher, I am also a singer/songwriter, and performed for 6 years at local coffee shops and outdoor events within Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey. I am also a member of a local professional caroling group called Yuletide Singers which performs seasonally in places like Longwood Gardens and corporate functions. My history for performing stretches back, though, to my years as a puppeteer/children's performer, touring with a team doing school assemblies and evening family performances. I'm always excited to bring my understanding and experience with performance to my students!

**And, with excitement, I must add that TakeLessons named me "Teacher of the Week" on October 4, 2010! What a great honor! Thank you TakeLessons!!**

*** Lesson Details ***
Our time spent together will be filled with many smiles & laughs because that is probably why you want to take lessons -- because it makes you feel wonderful inside!

Within 3-6 months, we'll begin discovering how to read music and understand the language of it. We'll learn how to play/sing some of your favorite songs and learn some that you might not know. We'll discover what you really want to learn and achieve through taking lessons, and we'll work toward those goals!

For the intermediate piano student, we will begin understanding basic Music Theory and scales and will even take a look at how chord symbols work. Soon, you'll be learning how to accompany yourself and others as you sing! For singers, we'll learn about vocal techniques, breathing, getting your best vocal sound and discovering how to take a song to its potential! We'll also learn performance techniques, how to work with a microphone, have a great stage presence in front of a live audience and begin learning how to read music and even get familiar with the piano keyboard! For all my students, it's a journey that is exciting, unique to each individual, and one we will embark on together!

Because music is a performing art, I coordinate two music recitals each school year for students who are interested. This is an optional event, but is encouraged as part of the learning experience. It is usually held at a local firehall and presented in a low-stress and fun way with refreshments that follow!

*My studio is in a safe, family-friendly home & smoke-free environment. We also having a loving canine member in our family... a Yellow Labrador Retriever named Maximus. He is energetic and friendly. You may or may not see him since the entrance to my studio is through our back door, off the main house.

So! What do you say? Shall we START THE MUSIC? :)

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons are enjoyed in a dedicated music room; keyboard (full-size with weighted keys and sustain pedal)

*** Specialties ***
*Teachers classified as a Student Favorite have taught a minimum of 25
lessons and have received the highest feedback rating from students.

I specialize in music education for all children, including ones with special needs. I feel it is so important for a child to start out with a fun and wonderful experience with music and performing. My approach is simple and fun and understandable for the young mind.

For my more intermediate students, I enjoy taking them to the next level of understanding in their instrument as well as music theory.

Because music is a performing art, I coordinate two music recitals each year for students who are interested. This is an optional event and presented in a low-stress and fun way!

Karen S.

Wilmington, DE

About Karen

I hold a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Misericordia University in Dallas, PA. I have studied piano with Gisa Adler at New School of Music in Philadelphia, PA. I taught public school in the Conestoga Valley School District in Lancaster County, PA and I have taught private piano for over ten years.
I love music and I love teaching - seeing my students progress and reach their goals. I believe music should be a pleasant experience and a demanding and ill - spirited teacher can ruin a student. I am NOT one of these. You will find me patient and supportive.

*** Lesson Details **
*
To be an accomplished pianist you must learn all the basics well. These include music symbology which enables you to read music so you can translate it into the sound on the piano. In order to play the music written on the page you must train your fingers to do what you need them to do - so you will have finger exercises and scales to practice to enable to play pieces/songs you like. In order to accomplish all this we will use a piano method designed to teach you these things little by little so you won't get overwhelmed. One step at a time towards your goal - self enjoyment, being the life of the party, accompany the chorus, play the songs you hear on the radio or perhaps even become a renowned pianist on stage or in the theater. Whatever your goal you will need to practice and you must have a piano or at least a keyboard. The method we use will depend on the student's age, reading level, past experience with piano or other instruments and I will take into consideration your goals. If you are interested in popular music there will be a point (when you are ready) when you will be able to add this type of music to the lesson music. How quickly you grow musically depends greatly on the quality of your practice time - thus you will determine your rate of progress.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I like to purchase new materials myself for the student based on their needs at the time. They need a decent notebook for listing practice items. I usually have the method book, with note-speller for beginners, theory for more advanced, and additional pieces (non-method) as appropriate. Hanon is a staple. I use various other materials to remedy finger technique and rhythm issues as learned from my teachers and those devised by myself.

*** Specialties ***
I prefer to use a variety of materials. At the first lesson I assess reading ability, interest, physical ability and attention span to determine what materials are appropriate for the student. All students will learn scales, finger exercises, pieces and theory. I have used Thompson, Schaum, Pace, Fletcher and Alfred in my teaching - and frequently a combination there-of.

Tanesha M.

Philadelphia, PA

About Tanesha

Hello There!

My First Lesson is free

If you are under the age of 18, please have a parent or guardian book the lessons for you.

My name is Tanesha. I have been playing guitar for a little over 7 years now. I am a self taught guitarist. Guitars have always been a passion of mine, ever since I could remember. I was always drawn to learn more on guitars and one day decided to teach myself. I wanted to teach myself to play so that I can develop my own teaching style, as well as my own methods of teaching. When you are an absolute beginner and you look to learn from other people,
their way of teaching can be a little challenging. But with my teaching style it is more broken down. I understand the struggles and difficulties that comes with learning guitar, that's; why I am here to break it down and teach as clearly as possible. I am a very caring person, I love to help others and love to see them improve daily. My main goal is for all of my students to learn and benefit from my teaching. I love when students are excited and eager to learn more. Putting effort is very important in order to succeed. if you don't put effort, it will not work.

My daughter, age 9, had been taking guitar classes with a local face to face teacher for a year yet I felt that she hadn't accomplished much. Through a series of questions from Tanesha she was able to create and tailor the lessons that best suited her learning skills & her skill level. In the other class, she hadn't even played a full song. However, through Tanesha she was able to play happy birthday just in time for her Grandmother's bday with in a month. She is also very good at informing you of their progress. This was our first time taking online classes and it has been a wonderful experience thus far. I highly recommend Tanesha!
