Jason M.

San Diego, CA

About Jason

TakeLessons.com Instructor since 2005, Jason M. is now available for online lessons worldwide featuring multiple-camera angles and a share screen experience leaving no stone un-turned!

Jason has been playing guitar for over 15 years and teaching music since 1996. Although trained in standard teaching methods, he has developed his own method of teaching to positively enhance the student€™s strength, dexterity, ear-training, memorization and techniques. His goal as a teacher is specifically designed to help you achieve your goals as an artist and a musician.

This year Jason was also the M
usic Director at the National Guitar Workshop Day Jams Rock Music Day Camp where students ages 7-15 came out to form bands, record original material and master their craft. He also taught beginning to advanced guitar/ vocals/ performance and songwriting as hosted a recording clinic at the end of each day.

Jason has host student showcases/charity benefits where his students were able to get on stage and show off their new talent and perform with other musicians. It wasn't mandatory though, if you were just looking to come out and support there was no pressure other than to come out and have fun.

Jason has been transcribing for guitar and bass since the age of 18 and since then has become a master of the craft including both 5 line staff and tablature, hand-crafted exercises and deconstructions to better enhance the students learning. Artists and genres that Jason has experience with range from Classic Rock, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Guns N' Roses, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Robert Johnson, Pierce the Veil, Paramore, All Time Low, Demi Lava to, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Pantera, Avenged Sevenfold, The White Stripes, Green Day, Old Crow Medicine Show, Taylor Swift, Mumford and Sons, Bruno Mars, Rob Zombie, John 5, Audioslave, Rage Against the Machine, Van Morrison, the Beatles, AC/DC, ZZ-Top, Bullet For My Valentine, All That Remains, Ozzy, Black Label Society, Sublime, Aerosmith, At the Drive In, Type O Negative, the Black Keys, the Pixies, the Toadies, Black Sabbath, Jason Mraz, Lady GaGa, John Mayer and Journey.

Jason attended the University of Alaska, Anchorage where his degree is in Music and Business. He is constantly continuing his education with music theory courses as well as private guitar instruction. He attends guitar workshops and seminars by artists such as John5 and Kerry King who are known as some of the worlds finest guitar players. He reviews every day from a wide range of over 1000 sources working to become a better musician and instructor.

Another nice feature that you might enjoy from one on one sessions with Jason is learning the ability to craft and record your own songs using state of the art technology that caters to your own unique personality. There are no limits!

Jason teaches all experience levels from beginner to intermediate and advanced as well as artists that are signed to labels.

Local news outlet Fox 5 did a segment with one of his students who overcame issues with ADD and depression as a result of taking guitar lessons.

His students advance quickly, some have released albums, been in Guitar World Magazine as well as its online companion and won awards for their music websites.

Jason is a great teacher, very knowledgeable and patient. I don't have any musical background whatsoever, but he quickly got me started learning to play banjo and answered all my questions. I highly recommend this teacher.

We were new to the whole online, private lesson world and only tried as a test for our 10 yr-old son. He has now been working with Jason for several months now and shows no signs of stopping. Our son is progressing, has gained confidence and still seems to have fun. Jason is on time and if you cannot make a lesson he is flexible in rescheduling if given some notice. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much Jason packs into his lessons without overwhelming the student. We highly recommend him!

Anne M.

Montclair, CA

About Anne

I am a professional, caring, and knowledgeable teacher. I believe that every student is an individual and I approach each lesson with that individual in mind. I have experience with all ages and am educated in many different teaching methods and styles. I am a confident believer that any person can succeed in music and enjoy music at some level.

Education

I began taking piano lessons when I was six years old and I was hooked. I took lessons for 9 years and then resumed again when I was in college. In fourth grade I picked up the flute and the saxophone because I wanted to play in the
school Jazz Band. I then took Alto Saxophone and Flute lessons for 8 years all the way through high school. It wasn't until high school that I caught the singing bug when I joined the women’s choir as a sophomore. I quickly caught on and became a member of the concert choir and then the chamber group. We toured to Greece my Junior year singing in churches and even as entertainment on a cruise through the Greek Islands!

I hold a bachelor of music education from Chapman University in Orange, CA. I sang in the world renown University Choir and the smaller University singers chamber choir under the direction of choral music legend Dr. William Hall. I was awarded the annual director chosen choir award at the end of my senior year and was selected by my peers as Vice President of the choir during my senior year. During my time at Chapman we toured to the Miami, Colorado, the Pacific Northwest, and Italy, where we sang in St. Marks Cathedral in Venice, the Vatican, and the Sistine Chapel.

I received my Master's Degree in Musicology in 2013 and am currently working on finishing my PhD program at Claremont Graduate University in Musicology. I an active choir participant and vocalist in the area and am the current Musical Director at St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church in Los Angeles. Music has always been my passion, and I love helping others to experience music in the same way that I have.

*** Lesson Details ***
Students can expect a fun, exciting, and educational learning environment with me. I am classically trained but have experience teaching jazz, pop, musical theater, and classical repertoire. My students learn the basics in a fun, positive environment geared towards their individual needs.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring some music, the student should have their own instrument after they decide to take lessons permanently.

*** Specialties ***
I am a classically trained musician so I really specialize in that, although I do have experience teaching pop and jazz as well.

A Perfect Match

Committed, kind, intuitive, highly skilled singer and instructor. Anne is perfect for my daughter, Natalie. Anne has time and again gone way beyond what is required in a voice teacher, and has shown ingenuity and patience where needed (most of the time). I would recommend Anne as voice coach for any young aspiring singer. She will inspire, patiently work through any difficulties, and never ever use negative criticism, but always positive suggestions. An amazing and talented young woman.

Blake A.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

About Blake

I've been an obsessive musical student since I was 5 years old (that's more than 80% of my life!) I competed as a concert pianist, with a background in musical theory and harmony. Later on I played in ensembles and bands--playing other people's music and making my own.

But this message about my experience is just to show you that I am confident in YOU because your musical journey is unique. You have certain things that you love in music; things that you may hear and experience that others may miss in the moment without you--and that means you have the talent to share something special.

I
look forward to helping you recognize and express your ideas, and learn to develop a relationship with the piano that enables you to continue making music long after our final lesson; on any instrument available to you; in any style you choose to explore.

It was nice meeting Blake. He is very knowledgeable and patient. I was embarrassed about just beginning to take lessons at my age. Blake was so reassuring and encouraging. I think that his willingness to pace the lesson for my lack of skill, and his ability to evaluate and determine where I should begin my practice was right on!

Thank you, Sylvia Esquerré

Vocal Training · In studio
This one is simple: Tiffany is the best voice teacher a singer could hope for.

Tiffany taught me healthy vocal practices and helped me adapt them to any style of singing. Because of her own vocal versatility and flexible teaching methods, she was able to work with me on musical theater, classical and opera, jazz, pop, and American songbook. Together with Tiffany, I prepared for each big musical at university, culminating in the role of Kate Monster in Avenue Q.

Tiffany helped me visualize my vocal mechanics. E.g. In addition to "knowing" I should sing through with a raised palate and lowered larynx in order to cultivate a concentrated tone, I learned to "see" the sound coming out of my head through a hamster tube. In addition to "knowing" I should engage my diaphragm for a grounded, supported sound, I learned to "see" a large rubber band extending from my throat to my belly. These particular visuals worked for me--if one of Tiffany's analogies wasn't doing the trick, we'd work together find one that did.

Most importantly, Tiffany's passion for singing and exuberance in teaching comes through at every moment. Her manner is infectious--no matter what kind of day you're having, once you walk into the room with Tiffany, the bad stuff melts away. She listens to you and empathizes with what's bugging you. Then she helps you channel that energy into your singing. And if your experiencing vocal distress, she'll stick with you through therapy and rehabilitation, giving you the skills to modify safely, and cope with your limitations, and not pushing you past your comfort zone.

Tiffany was everything I could have hoped for in a voice teacher and more: a coach, collaborator, confidant, and friend. I miss taking lessons with her and am jealous that you have the opportunity to enlist her brilliant talent and service!

(cont.) As a student, I learned how to navigate the passaggio much better, and saw a huge improvement in my upper range. My tone quality became much clearer, and I saw my breath control improve. Tiffany also introduced me to a huge variety of repertoire, and was always open to new things. Her style of teaching absolutely does focus on technical problems, but I never felt bored or that the lessons were monotonous as I had with previous teachers. She's an absolutely wonderful teacher.

I studied with Tiffany for several years, beginning with musical theater and eventually transitioning into classical music. She was a wonderful teacher–always supportive and extremely punctual, and our lessons gave me a solid foundation that I was able to build upon as a Vocal Performance major in college.

Michelle M.

Upland, CA

About Michelle

Classical performing and recording artist Michelle M. has openings for flute students of any level, from beginner to advanced. Michelle has performed worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician. As a teacher, she focuses on learning skills correctly from the beginning, with emphasis on good tone production and healthy body mechanics. She also works with high school students preparing college auditions, and has regular recital opportunities for all students.

"I love teaching private lessons. It's so much fun watching students grow musically and emotionally! My teaching style emphasizes l
earning CORRECTLY from the beginning, so that bad habits don't form, such as bad posture which can lead to pain down the road. I also pick music which the students know and enjoy, so that playing daily becomes a fun ritual for them.

"Learning musical skills such as theory, composition and improvisation are also part of my teaching style. These things strengthen a student's overall musical knowledge and enjoyment. I also highly recommend that students listen and watch flute performances, either recordings or live concerts.

"Of course, the best part is playing, and I encourage all students to perform as much as possible, whether in my student recitals or in outside concerts. I offer many opportunities for performance, and help prepare students for their own band or orchestra concerts as well."

Michelle is a fantastic teacher! My daughter was a beginner student, just starting at elementary school, and we wanted to supplement those lessons. Wow, what a difference it has made! Elaine shows improvement after every lesson and she just LOVES Michelle. She is patient and kind, and very motivational. She has a knack for reaching Elaine and bringing out the best in her. Thank you, Michelle!

As a former student, I couldn't feel luckier to have studied flute with Michelle for ~6 years (ages 10-16). During that time, she not only helped improve my technique and skill enormously, but also acted as a hugely supportive, warm and funny presence in my life. Michelle genuinely cared about my progress and very patiently guided me through years of instruction, offering constant encouragement. She always made sure I was thoroughly prepared for every recital, music competition, or youth orchestra that I participated in, and helped me pick music that I always enjoyed playing and practicing. She was also very thoughtful and hands-on in terms of helping me choose a new flute, a music camp, etc., which my parents and I greatly appreciated.

During my time with Michelle, I felt that my lessons were excellently paced—she knew when to push and challenge me, but also made sure I was comfortable with the material, and didn't rush me if something proved more difficult. Over the years, we progressed through theory, breathing techniques, scales, playing with an accompanist or another flutist, etc. in a way that felt very natural and appropriate. Additionally, the relationship we built became very important to me as a student. There were several times that, as an overextended middle- or high-schooler, I seriously thought about quitting flute—but the idea of stopping lessons with Michelle was sad enough to make me reconsider each time. I truly appreciated how much she cared about me both as a musician and as a person, and was thankful in the end to have kept playing with her as long as I did.

Michelle is easy-going and knowledgeable, kind and talented, understanding and wonderful. I will always be so grateful for the kind of instruction and encouragement I received from her—she helped me grow as a musician in every way. Thank you so much!!

My daughter (who is now in college) was a student of Michelle’s from 4th – 11th grade. Michelle is a talented musician, a wonderful person, and a very effective teacher. My daughter really enjoyed her lessons with Michelle - it was always a bright spot in her busy week. She benefited from Michelle’s guidance outside of lessons also – recitals, entering and placing in solo competitions, and auditioning and playing for the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra. We felt so lucky to have found Michelle – she was an excellent teacher and a wonderful role model - teacher, musician, mother. I recommend her very, very highly.

Beginner Basics: How to Read Violin Sheet Music
The most valuable skill you can develop as a musician is learning to read music. While it’s possible to learn to play “by ear,” reading music opens up the world to you as an artist! There are many different ways to write music. Guitarists often read off of charts outlining the chord progressions for the song. Drummers have a rhythm chart showing them what to play.
