Drum lessons available from in-home only
Having played music for as long as I can remember (my father is an accomplished Jazz and Soul drummer), music has always been a key ingredient in my life. From playing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme on the drum set as a toddler, I have gone on to learn electric/classical/lap steel guitar, electric/upright bass, various keyboard instruments, most percussion instruments, and many old time instruments such as banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, and harmonica. I'm currently teaching myself viola. In addition to the performing aspect of music, I am also experienced with writing/composition, recording/engineering/mixing/production, and design/manufacturing/distribution/vending of my own albums as well as those of others. However, none of these things bring me the same joy as teaching the ways
I play, write, record and perform a variety of American popular music forms including rock, folk, blues, funk, bluegrass, country, fingerstyle guitar, and jazz. I began my musical training learning drums as a 12 year old and a year later began private lessons on guitar as well. In the following years, while playing in rock bands and focusing primarily on guitar and continuing practice on drums, I became interested in learning other instruments: I took harmonica lessons and taught myself how to play bass guitar and keyboards. As a teenager I also began writing my own songs and teaching myself how to record music. I also play Spanish flamenco guitar and studied with master flamenco players while living in Madrid, Spain. Today, I play guitar, harmonica, sing and write songs for my
I have been teaching beginner to professional of all ages for eighteen years. My students all have positive experiences and have given me great feedback!
I have been working as a freelance musician and private instructor in Chicago for fifteen years. During this time I have been hired to perform Jazz, Rock, R/B, and world music. As an instructor I have maintained a studio of five to twenty students on a weekly basis. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Percussion Performance, and a Master of Music degree from De Paul University in Jazz Studies. *** Lesson Details *** With committed weekly practice there are no limits to a student's potential. I like to use the term guide to describe my teaching style. In a relaxed atmosphere, the student and I are working together to advance their musical goals. Sometimes goals are reached quickly, more often we need more time and repetition to advance.
I have experience teaching all ages and sill levels. I have taught students ranging from age 5 to adults.
I am a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with a bachelors in jazz drum set performance. I have toured with various bands in the US, Asia, and Europe and recently completed six months of teaching, studying, and performing music in Brazil. I teach all levels and all styles of music, from Rock to Jazz to Latin-American rhythms. In my lessons I maintain a healthy balance of drum basics (rudiments, stick technique) and helping the students learn the music that would like to play. Learning the fundamentals gives students the tools they need to be creative as possible. I can prepare students for school band and jazz band auditions as well as prepare them to play in a band of their own! *** Lesson Details *** I always spend a good part of each lesson working with students on ...
I have been teaching drum lessons full time for 11 years. My main goal as a teacher has always been to give every student a solid foundation in the fundamentals of drumming. This includes both the mental and physical aspects. Mental includes both reading music and playing by ear, and physical includes proper technique and coordination for both the hands and feet. Once you become proficient in the raw materials of drumming you will be able to learn any style of music you want.
My approach to teaching is very focused on giving students a strong foundation in the fundamentals of music. For drums this would be reading and understanding rhythms, proper technique which includes both hands and feet for drum kit, snare drum which I believe is the foundation for everything, and practicing with a metronome. Having a good solid foundation in these things will give you the tools necessary to learn any style of music you choose with much more ease and confidence. I know this from my own personal 26 years of experience and also from the success of my former and current students who have this foundation.
Teaching Experience: 12 years. I like to first make sure the hands are not only correct, but efficiently playing the drums. Once we establish good free flowing chops, then we work on whatever the student is interested in. Want to play drum set? We'll do some funk grooves and syncopated exercises. Want to learn how to swing? We'll check out and transcribe the greats. Want to get better at your rudiments? We'll work on snare drum cadences from professional marching groups. Its up to you!
