Drum Lessons in Chicago, IL

Chicago is one of the focal points for American music. Deeply rooted in the blues and soul, musicians from the area have made significant contributions to musical history, including Nat King Cole, Benny Goodman and Muddy Waters, as well as more recent artists such as The Smashing Pumpkins and Kanye West. Finding the talent to teach Chicago drum lessons is not the problem; connecting with them can be.

Mastering the drum kit can be a daunting task. Not only do you have to propel the rhythm of a song or even an entire band, but you have to do it with instruments that spread 180º in front of you. Playing them requires not only knowledge and technical know-how, but also a firm sense of physical fitness and superior technique. These skills don't just come to a new player through practice; they have to be taught by a skilled professional.

Although there are tons of talented drummers in the Chicago area, it can sometimes be difficult to connect with one who wants to teach their skills to others. TakeLessons is a way to find those talented musicians with no risk. Our instructors complete a rigorous interview process, including a background check, before they start working with us. Even better, your first lesson is backed with our 100% money back guarantee, making it risk-free!

Simply use our handy search tool and book online, or call 800-252-1508 to speak with a friendly customer service representative for extra assistance. Let us know what you’re looking for, and we’ll help you customize your schedule, lesson location and lesson plan according to your needs and interests.

Don't be left out of the loop on drum technique. The different rhythms and syncopations can be daunting, but in the hands of an expert teacher, you can master them and become the backbone of your own band! So don’t wait - get started today!

I've known Mike since he was a teenager. Drumming is, and always was, his passion. You can't find a better instructor. His knowledge, experience and patience with younger children is over the top! My 5 year old grandson is a student and absolutely loves his lessons and his teacher. My rating is 5+

My child and I both share a love of drums. Unfortunately I wasn't very good at it, well at least til Mike came along. Now my son is in a band and I get to jam with them during practice. All thanks to you Mike. The take home DVD's as well really enhanced. This way we could go over what he just learned. Rock on buddy!!

Mike is a BEAST! Just by watching his videos alone I have made huge improvements. I had been playing over 20 yrs at that point, I wish I had known about Mike at an earlier point in my playing, who knows where I would be now.

Drum lessons available from in-home only

About Chaetan

Having played music for as long as I can remember (my father is an accomplished Jazz and Soul drummer), music has always been a key ingredient in my life. From playing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme on the drum set as a toddler, I have gone on to learn electric/classical/lap steel guitar, electric/upright bass, various keyboard instruments, most percussion instruments, and many old time instruments such as banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, and harmonica. I'm currently teaching myself viola.

In addition to the performing aspect of music, I am also experienced with writing/composition, recor
ding/engineering/mixing/production, and design/manufacturing/distribution/vending of my own albums as well as those of others. However, none of these things bring me the same joy as teaching the ways of music to others. Fortunately, all of these skills integrate to bring about a clear view of the big picture in regards to music so I can better serve a wider variety of pupils and quickly reveal this big picture to all of them.

While I have indeed put a lot of time in touring and playing rowdy rock shows with many critically acclaimed and well-known musicians, I have also taken countless years of public and private lessons on guitar, bass, drums, piano, music theory, and songwriting from highly decorated and regarded teachers. As a child, I played in a nearly overwhelming amount of ensembles and attended various camps and seminars including Cannon Music Camp where I played with The North Carolina Symphony for two consecutive summers. This all prepared me for the Bachelors of Music I received from Berklee College of Music where I appeared on the Dean's List each semester. Now for the price of one instructor, you can learn from a man with as much knowledge as an entire faculty.

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether you are a veteran trying to improve your chops, a beginner just looking for learn songs off the radio, or someone who wants to take the full plunge of understanding music in and out in hopes of renown mastery, I can do it all and more. Books? No books? You will be taught however you like at whatever speed works best. I provide a friendly, low-pressure atmosphere that will allow you to feel comfortable enough to reach your full potential. We will be having such a good time, you will forget to even be nervous!

Any genre you can name, I have taken at least a hearty sample of it and can instruct you in this vein with ease and insight. I also love to introduce my students to entirely new influences as well. There is more amazing music out there than you would think and even more to be created in the future. Come get in on it!

Group Lessons are available as well for the same rates as private lessons, so you cut the price in half as soon as you introduce a second student.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Private recording studio with guitars, basses, drum set, keyboards, amps, and an array of recording equipment. Seating for parents may be arranged as well. Guitar and bass students must bring their own guitar or bass. Sorry for any inconvenience, but DRUM LESSONS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE "IN-HOME."

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students must have their own equipment, so they can practice on their own. For guitar and bass lessons, I will also bring my own guitar or bass to give them visual cues. For drum lessons, I will bring my own bag of sticks.

*** Specialties ***
All genres and techniques may be taught. My wide range of knowledge and years of experience within the realm of independent music set me apart from the rest, but my passion for developing your relationship with music is what you will remember.

Great Beginner Guitar Lessons

I look forward to my weekly guitar lessons with Chaetan because he is a very knowledgeable, relaxed, and patient teacher. He tailors my lessons to meet my personal goals (learning those pinnacle acoustic songs). But as an exceptional instructor, he also guides me to meet goals he has for me as a student, such as learning to build chords on my own. The quality of his instruction has already increased my progress on the instrument. Overall, his talent and interest in music motivate me to practice so I am fortunate to have found Chaetan as my guitar teacher.

Excellent and Unique Teacher

Chaetan is a very friendly instructor who tailors his lessons to meet both the experience level and type of music a student is interested in. Chaetan has a lot of energy and makes the lessons fun. He appears to know every aspect of what he is teaching as well as plays other instruments. My daughter and I are both very happy with Chaetan.

Will P.

Chicago, IL

About Will

I play, write, record and perform a variety of American popular music forms
including rock, folk, blues, funk, bluegrass, country, fingerstyle
guitar, and jazz.

I began my musical training learning drums as a 12 year old and a year later began private lessons on guitar as well. In the following years, while playing in rock bands and focusing primarily on guitar and continuing practice on drums, I became interested in learning other instruments: I took harmonica lessons and taught myself how to play bass guitar and keyboards. As a teenager I also began writing my own songs and teaching my
self how to record music. I also play Spanish flamenco guitar and studied with master flamenco players while living in Madrid, Spain.

Today, I play guitar, harmonica, sing and write songs for my own group, while also working on a variety of other recording projects that reflect my various musical personalities. I love everything about music, and there's nothing I enjoy more than sharing music with others, whether that be playing in a group, going to a concert with a friend, or talking about music with one of my students. One of my greatest joys is seeing others get involved in the world of music by learning to play an instrument, so I take great pride and responsibility in teaching my students and I hope to make that experience as positive and rewarding as it can be for everyone I work with.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am happy to work with students of any age regardless of prior experience or ability. Music is the universal language. Everyone is welcome.

Check out my new song samples for a taste of what I do. All instruments, vocals and production done by me at my home studio.

My approach:
I take a multi-disciplinary, multi-instrumental approach to teaching music. I feel that today's students are very interested in learning more than just one instrument, style or discipline. One of my greatest assets as a teacher is that I can play and teach guitar, bass, drums, harmonica, keyboards, songwriting, and audio production/engineering, or any combination thereof, to a student that is interested in becoming more than just a guitar player.

That being said, my musical experience centers primarily on the guitar, and that's where I prefer to start teaching my students. And if you only want to learn guitar, we'll just stick with guitar. However, if you want to learn other instruments too (guitar and drums; guitar, bass, and harmonica; guitar, keys and drums; etc.) we will work together to create a program that allows you to achieve all of your musical goals in time.

No matter what, the bottom line is this: you determine the direction of your musical education. The first time we meet, we will talk about your musical interests and goals, and from that conversation I will design a curriculum that fits your personality, needs and desires. I work with each of my students to determine and constantly refine his or her path, and as we follow your path I will work to give you all the tools needed to pursue your goals...and if I can't give them to you I'll help you find someone who can. I know my limits as a musician and teacher and I will always be honest with you about those things. For example, if you decide you want to be a jazz guitarist, I can get you started on that path, but once you advance beyond my limits (I love jazz, but it's not my forte), I will help you find a teacher who better fits your needs and goals.

Finally, I have always felt that music should be fun and there's no reason that learning to play an instrument can't be fun too. That doesn't mean it won't be hard work, because, like anything else in life, as you get deeper into music it will not only become more rewarding, but more challenging too. Still, it should always be fun. I understand that each student is unique and what "fun" means for one student may be different for another, and so we will work at your pace and according to your goals and desires to create a program that is ideal for you.

My Method:

I use a variety of teaching techniques and tools in my lessons and will cater those tools toward the needs of each student. You don't need to read music to learn how to play an instrument, but I do use a number of simple, easy-to-learn written methods in my teaching. More importantly, I encourage my students to learn how to "hear" music so that as they advance they can begin to teach themselves how to play the things that they hear. Therefore, much of my teaching method focuses on seeing, hearing and feeling the music...this is the way almost all popular music has been taught and learned since the beginning of time, and with the right supplement of written methods I think it still comprises the most effective way to become a complete musician.

I can also record every lesson for my students and make the recording available as a CD or mp3 via email so that you can listen to the lesson as you practice on your own at home.

Additionally, if you are interested in songwriting or audio recording, we can incorporate lessons on those subjects into your curriculum as well. Understanding both is an essential part of being a well-rounded musician in any genre these days and both fields can open up wide worlds of expression and artistry to those willing to delve into them. I am passionate and knowledgeable about both songwriting and recording.

Incredible Teacher

I am completely new to playing an instrument and Will taught me an incredible amount... from playing the instrument, to understanding music theory, to listening and understanding some of the great musicians. He takes a holistic approach to his teaching and the 45 minute sessions are done before you know it. He makes it fun and comfortable, which is important when you are just learning. I recommend him if you are at any level.

Jeff F.

Chicago, IL

I have been teaching beginner to professional of all ages for eighteen years. My students all have positive experiences and have given me great feedback!

About Jeff

I have been working as a freelance musician and private instructor in Chicago for fifteen years. During this time I have been hired to perform Jazz, Rock, R/B, and world music. As an instructor I have maintained a studio of five to twenty students on a weekly basis. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Percussion Performance, and a Master of Music degree from De Paul University in Jazz Studies.

*** Lesson Details ***
With committed weekly practice there are no limits to a student's potential. I like to use the term guide to describe my teaching
style. In a relaxed atmosphere, the student and I are working together to advance their musical goals. Sometimes goals are reached quickly, more often we need more time and repetition to advance. The mind learns quicker than the body, so focused practice will help train the body and bring it to the mind's level.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Finished Basement studio: drum set, snare drum, small mallet, xylophone and electric piano, room for parents to sit in on lesson

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student should provide sticks and mallets and purchase a book that we will work out of weekly.

*** Specialties ***
I feel comfortable teaching all levels of percussion. I have experience teaching a variety of styles Jazz, rock, classical, and world.

Terrific! We are very happy with the lesson, our young son is learning. Teacher Jeff is great with him - very methodical, consistent and has a lot of patience and understanding with our little guy. Our son looks forward to lessons and enjoys practicing the work he's given to work on during the week. He's great about explaining what we should work on with our son and how to do it, what to watch for and why we are working on what is being assigned. We have had a great first experience!

**Excellent** drum instructor, highly recommended

Jeff is everything you'd want in a drum instructor: he is highly skilled, has thorough knowledge of drumming styles and technique, and he is an excellent communicator. On top of that he is thoughtful, polite and listens carefully. This is all a very, very rare combination.

I had to play a couple of slow gospel tunes for a church service this summer; Jeff very quickly found suitable and tasteful grooves for me that were within my capability to play. He also worked with me on some rudiments and provided invaluable feedback. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Chicago, IL

I've been teaching drums for about 6 years. I like to focus on teaching my students what they are most eager to learn about and then shape the curriculum around that. Generally I will set goals with my students as far as which songs to learn and then break the songs down with technique, rudimentary exercises, and music theory when requested. My flexible yet effective curriculum leads students to success on the drums and fuels a passion for music.

Nick is really friendly, easygoing, and offers great vocal coaching on a wide range of genres. My son already improved after one class, and is learning to push thru tougher parts of a Hall-n-Oates R&B song. I plan on adding my other son into the mix. Location and parking was easy to find. We're excited and looking forward to more future classes with Nick.

My son, Malcolm, took drum kit lessons from Nick Jester for a year. He exposed him to a variety of music styles and helped shape Malcolm's own style of drumming. Nick is gifted in so many artistic ways, he's an inspiration to my son still to this day. He works well with students of any age. I highly recommend him as an instructor!
