John M.

Redlands, CA

About John

*** Specialties ***
Hi, there! My name is John M and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2012 and have loved helping my students build a solid foundation and understanding of music, as well as developing their skills to become well rounded musicians. I also help my students learn to enjoy practicing and performing. I went to the University of Redlands and earned a degree in Music Composition in 2014. I'm a fun and friendly person and my teaching style is constructed in a way that will appeal to visual, aural, and kinesthetic learners. I am very interested in Kod
aly's method of inner hearing and music literacy. I also use warm ups that will help my students develop proper playing techniques, and I teach my students how to play with expression, and emotion. I strive to teach at the best of my ability, work hard, and share my love for music with others. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

Ann N.

Duarte, CA

About Ann

I am President of a growing and flourishing arts organization that specializes in education outreach and commissioning new works. I also tour nationally as a solo/principal soprano and have worked locally with companies like Los Angeles Opera, Opera Pacific, Opera a la Carte and many other Southern California performing arts organizations. I have a BA in vocal performance from Cal Poly Pomona and have worked as a professional singer and teaching artist for the last twenty-five years. In addition to teaching voice in my studio, I am currently working as a teaching artist in several diffe
rent schools and special education sites throughout Southern California. I love to teach, I love when students make breakthroughs, and I love overcoming challenges and solving problems. I specialize in light opera and musical theater. My philosophy is that if a student develops good singing technique, they can sing in any style, from pop music to opera, and keep their voice healthy. No two voices are the same and each of us has our own unique instrument, with the right training that instrument can grow and work at it's optimum. I approach my lessons with humor, putting the student at ease, if the student is comfortable and relaxed, they are more open to learning and their voice will sound much more free and beautiful.

*** Lesson Details ***
The lessons are designed around each student's particular need, especially when it comes to how the student likes to learn, not every person learns the same way, so flexibility is key. The student will be given a solid concept of good breath support, work with matching pitches, singing with a line, producing good tone quality and singing with good diction and projection. The student is ultimately going to learn how to become their own voice teacher, they will learn how to listen to their voice and be able to identify warning signs of vocal trouble and how to prevent and solve problems. After about three months the student will be producing much prettier tone and begin to grasp the concept of breath support. As time moves on, they will build their ability to support their voice, open up their sound so they can get more volume without hurting their instrument and the student will develop a better endurance, being able to sing longer and not tire out too quickly. As the students technique develops and strengthens, they will become more confident. If the student is already performing or has worked to the point where they are ready to start performing, then we will spend more time on interpretation and acting as well as developing a confident stage presence.

I was very fortunate to be able to take my first acting lessons with Mara Madison. Her and her husband provided a very supportive and encouraging environment to someone with no acting experience or background. Mara is very knowledgeable and well prepared for each class. She gave me helpful advice and encouragement, as well as material to take home and study for future classes.

Ben has always been very helpful to me. He takes me step by step and doesn't move on until he is sure that I understand the lesson. One of the best things is that he teaches you songs that you want to learn so that you learn the style that you want to. If there are no online chords or tabs, he takes the time to figure them out for you. Ben is also very punctual. Along with being punctual, he is very flexible with his schedule. I would recommend him.

Ben has always been very helpful. He is very flexible with his schedule, very patient with his students, and asks them for songs they would like to learn so that he can teach them the style that they want to learn. He also understands when other priorities come first, and has no problem adjusting. He takes his students through step by step. I would definitely recommend Ben.

My daughter and a friend of the family took lesson from Ben. He is very professional and a great teacher after the first couple of lessons they were already playing recognizable tunes. He's a very patient and willing to go the extra mile for his students. We no longer live in the area but we are now going to continue with him online. I would recommend him to anyone!
