Jennifer T.

Ashburn, VA

About Jennifer

My name is Jennifer. I got my degree in vocal performance and minored in Jazz. I began voice lessons myself when I was eight. I am a mezzo soprano, and can teach both female and male voices. I have performed in several opera productions including but not limited to The Marriage of Figaro, Dido and Aeneus, Tenderland, and Hand of Bridge. I have worked and performed in masterworks by Brahms, Chopin, Mozart to name a few. I studied in French, English, Spanish, Italian, and German. I studied diction, ear training, piano, music history, pedagogy, and music theory. I have also performed with artists
such as New York Voices, Bobby Mcferrin and Kurt Elling. I was blessed with many learning opportunities to grow in my passion and I would love to pass that knowledge and passion to anyone who wants to learn.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are designed around the needs of each student. The first lessons is always spent testing range, knowledge and abilities already known by the student. Then the student weighs in on what kind of music they would like to learn and what they hope to gain from the lessons. Theory and ear training are incorporated into the lessons. We work on breathing, technique and style. Generally we start with English or Italian. We work on vocal performance from a classical standpoint but Jazz and Broadway can also be taught if desired by the student. Scales and exercises are given each week to be worked on until the next lesson. A recording device is encouraged if the student cannot play the piano. Also, a voice note book to take notes during the lesson to be used during practice during the week.

*** Specialties ***
classical voice and jazz voice.

Mike T.

Manassas, VA

About Mike

I have played bluegrass banjo since I was 16 (I am now looking at Social Security). I have been instructing for six years since semi-retiring from my day job. I use various teaching methods and aids and have participated in training programs with the finest banjo players in the country, including Sonny Osborne, Bill Emerson, Tony Trischka, Ned Luberecki, Pete Wernick, Jim Mills, Bill Evans, Charlie Cushman and Alan Munde.

My banjo philosophy is that while we may aspire to play banjo like Earl Scruggs, it is not necessary to be at that level to enjoy playing bluegrass music. The or
ganic simplicity of bluegrass songs, the repetition of components, and the strong melody lines makes entry level playing fun and rewarding and within the reach of anyone who is willing to try.

When bluegrass musicians are jamming together, using new skills, learning with and from each other, there's little chance they will give up playing music. I'd say they're hooked -- on bluegrass! More people spending less time in front of a TV, and more with each other. Wholesome fun. A bigger, thriving bluegrass community. A better world!

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that anyone learning bluegrass should first learn the chords to favorite easy songs, and a simple way of accompanying. Playing songs smoothly in real time while using a songbook (or a fellow picker) for the words, is easy, fun, and builds a rhythmic/chordal foundation and repertoire.

Easy jamming is highly recommended and will be part of the learning program. Good sounding rhythm techniques can be added easily as they are learned. Through this process, overall technique is expanded and the music sounds more interesting. Once we have the chords and rhythm, different types of soloing can be added. The easiest method is to "fake it" by just playing simple licks and rhythm techniques while following the chord changes. The next step up might be to play an exact tabbed (a form of written banjo music) basic solo, or (better) a self-composed one featuring melody. This phase is exciting to enter, and of course it creates motivation to really improve and master those solos we all want to play. Since all students come to bluegrass banjo with their own unique skills and experience - I will design a program just for you to ensure you reach you playing goals.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Little equipment is required for bluegrass banjo other than the instrument.

*** Specialties ***
5 string Bluegrass Banjo

Mike was excellent! We have started with the basics and now it's time for practice! He's very patience and explains the lesson clearly. He also records what we did with our time and writes out a lesson plan on what to practice. I'm very excited to be working with Mike!

Michael C.

Haymarket, VA

About Michael

Hello, thank you for clicking on my profile. If you are interested in furthering your skills as a musician than I may be the person for you.

My 11 years of playing experience combined with 1.5 years of professional touring and 3 years of tutoring make me a wealth of knowledge to help you grow as quickly as you desire.

I have experience playing drums, bass guitar, electric & acoustic guitar, slide guitar, piano, and singing. The creativity is within all of us and together we will find your best learning style and make the process of learning any instrument (including your body) fun!

As a performer I have been through a gamut of gigs at the 9:30 Club, Howard Theatre, and Joshua Tree Music Festival in California. Each time I gained more knowledge of what it takes to be at my best while performing. However, I also love to jam out at home and improvise with whoever is around. Singing and playing music is a beautiful thing and is even sweeter when shared.

Warm Regards,
Michael

Michael's piano skills are wonderful and he's a true talent as a musician! I just wish we could have spent more time together on a weekly basis to be able to absorb the wealth of musical knowledge he possesses. His technique is great and I really learned a lot about piano and my own ability to perform on stage and in front of crowds. I seriously don't really get that nervous anymore.

Michael not only helped me foster an appreciation for piano/keyboards, but for my own voice on the instrument. Without his help I never would have realized my full potential as a musician!! Thanks MAN!

As a student of Ian, I can say that I am always excited for him to arrive for lessons. The fact that he is always super energetic and always understanding, and provides a really personal experience. He assigns work outside of the lessons, but never too much, just enough to get a head-start on the following lesson. As an intermediate trumpet player, I can say I thoroughly enjoyed taking lessons from him and would recommend him to others.

Leslie Z.

Manassas, VA

About Leslie

My name is Leslie, and I recently graduated from James Madison University with a degree in music education. I've been involved with teaching in various capacities from about age 8 until now, but have been teaching voice and piano lessons anywhere from Pre-K to lifelong learning groups for the past several years now.

I grew up learning classical methods for voice and have been able to translate those healthy techniques to other styles of music. I have most recently performed in operas through JMU and other professional groups, have been involved in their musicals as well as in semi-professi
onal productions, and have enjoyed my time singing in jazz combos. Participating in both performance and education has always been important in my life, and I hope to continue this trend. Not only do I find both settings incredibly enjoyable, but I am a firm believer that teachers should be able to practice what they preach as far a skill acquisition and work ethic!

While voice is my primary instrument, I also offer piano for beginning and intermediate students as well as ear training lessons. While we have fun in our lessons and with music, a certain amount of discipline and practice time is necessary for improvement. You'll find that I'm very organized in my approach for all subjects, as I take the time that you are paying for seriously. I work hard to offer comprehensive lessons that will help you with whatever genre you're learning or skills you're working to hone.

If you have any questions at all- about lessons, your teacher search, or scheduling, feel free to send me a note, and I'll be happy to get back to you as quickly as possible!

My daughter has taken two lessons with Leslie thus far, and my daughter loves her session. Leslie is very patient and you can tell she enjoys teaching. She allows my daughter to express herself but yet refocuses her effectively on the lesson at hand. She is very constructive with her lesson plan. I thoroughly enjoy my daughter's enthusiasm towards her lesson.

Learning to Read Music: An Introduction for Singers
Learning to read music can be a daunting task for beginner singers! Here, Ann Arbor, MI voice teacher Elaina R. shows you how to get started...   Not to point out the obvious, but as singers, we don’t have keys on our instrument. We don’t have buttons that emit the same pitch every time they are pressed. Most of us don’t have perfect pitch, either. This makes learning to read music quite different for singers than for other musicians. Not only do singers deal with learning how
Master Ukulele Chords: Your Guide to D, Dm, and D7
For many beginners, the D chord will be one of the first ukulele chords you learn how to play. However, you may not learn at first that the D chord can be played in several different positions, and in variations such as D minor (notated as Dm) and D seventh (notated as D7). Choosing the best position to play a particular chord during a song depends on its proximity to other chords in the song and the sound you want to achieve. When you are making chord changes, it always helps to choose the f
