Robyn J.

Knoxville, TN

About Robyn

I have been playing violin and viola for over 20 years. I hold a Bachelor's and Master's degree in music and teach assorted music courses at Pellissippi State Community College and Lincoln Memorial University. I have taught children, teens, and adults; both beginners and continuing students. I learn where the student is skill-wise and we go from there. I also ask the student what his/her goals are, so that we have a set to-do list with which to work. Feel free to browse my website at www.robynjames.com!

*** Lesson Details ***
We will work at your pace--I will push you, but I am aware that
everyone works at a different speed. I will learn that speed and work with you accordingly. I expect students to practice and do their best, but I also understand that life sometimes gets in the way. After a few months, you will know the basics of the instrument and be able to play recognizable tunes for your family and friends!

*** Studio Equipment - Parents ***
Music room/office with seating for parents/guardians in living room.

*** Studio Equipment - Students ***
I provide a music stand in my studio, but nothing else. My students should have an instrument with all accessories (bow, case, shoulder rest) and also a music stand for home practicing.

Viola · In studio
Robyn James is an excellent viola teacher! She is patient, kind, extremely knowledgeable, understanding, and easily adapts to each student's individual playing style and ability. She is also very flexible when it comes to scheduling (especially if a scheduling conflict occurs). I've played the viola for 10 years and I had taken a small break from the instrument when I was introduced to Robyn in school. Since starting lessons with her almost a year ago, my confidence as a person and a player have improved and I have her to thank for it. She is always able to answer any and all of my questions, and if she doesn't have one right away, she does her research and gets back to me by our next lesson. She is very serious about what she does and you can tell how much she loves it. She also knows how to challenge her students in a way that is not overwhelming, and, as long as you come prepared and ready to learn and grow, she is one of the best teachers that you could possibly ask for. I look forward to seeing her every week. Robyn is the best!

Viola Lessons

I have played the viola from sixth to twelfth grade, but never taken a private lesson until signing up to take one at Pellissippi State Community College. From the first day of the lessons that semester until the last I looked forward to going to them. Robyn easy to get along with and an excellent teacher as well as violist and violinist. While I haven't had her as an instructor for violin using what I know from my viola lessons and having heard her play violin I would imagine those lessons are just as fun and fruitful as the viola lessons.

Tim R.

Powell, TN

About Tim

With classical and jazz guitar studies, with years of collaborative composition in progressive rock and fusion, and with years of solo guitar composing, I have attained a high level of technique, gained a deep understanding of music theory and songwriting, and authored a comprehensive book, "Understand, See, Hear - Become One with the Guitar." My musical journey as a composer and recording artist has always been an expression of my individuality. With many years teaching private lessons, I offer myself as a mentor, to help anyone achieve their voice, their passion, on the guitar.

Details ***
Music is a subjective experience. As a listener, what you love reflects yourself; similarly, what you play reflects yourself. As your mentor, my goal is to nurture your development as a guitar player, as well as, nurture your self-expression through the instrument. With perseverance, your goals as a musician can be attained with each lesson a step in understanding and in motor skills to this end. Always though, the objective is that the musical journey is fun and fulfilling.

*** Studio Equipment ***
separate music room seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
Approaching the guitar holistically, I show how the guitar is organized using templates from my book. Musical concepts such as chords and scales are applied within the guitar's holistic framework and are related to the student's preferred artists/songs. If it compliments the student's learning style, musical notation is used. Styles I specialize in are rock 'n' roll, jazz, and classical.

Tim shows sound understanding of music theory. He is very positive and enthusiastic about improving student's knowledge and performance. He usually gives me a lot of ideas to incorporate what your hear and what you play. I really enjoy the lesson with him. Thanks.

Will F.

Knoxville, TN

About Will

I teach guitar, drums and vocals to an array of students ranging from 10 to 60. Not only do I teach but I also write songs for certain students who have a desire to perform their own music as well as learning and honing their craft on their instrument. I am currently helping a vocal student of mine write some songs after scales and warm-ups and am working with one of my top guitar students tomorrow on different scale techniques. I just placed a drum student in the finals in Alternative Press Magazine's Hit Like A Girl competition. She was the top vote getter with 1,026 votes and is in the top
10 under 18 drummers in the world. I am also working with more and more students on songwriting and showing them different chords and ways to go about writing a song. I would love to get started with you as soon as possible and we will get you where you want to be musically. I find that if a student has a particular song or a rhythm pattern they want to learn they learn more quickly. They're learning and having fun at the same time. We will find what you want to learn and we will get it down! Furthermore, it's your choice if you would rather come to my place as a lot of my students do or have me come to your place as a lot of them do. I look forward to speaking with you! Cheers!

*** Lesson Details ***
I will get you started depending on your skill level. I usually, of course, see where we're at there and then decide what needs to be taught. With each respective student I usually make them a CDR the lessons for you so you can take them home and improve on what we've worked on.

Maryville, TN

About Robert

I have been teaching full time for 10+ years, playing guitar for 40+ years. Teaching is a passion for me. I am at an age where i want to pass on the information that i have had the privilege of learning all these years.... I am a very patient person by nature. I have successfully taught folks with Aspergers syndrome, severe ADD, and also bi-polar disease, so many special needs can be accommodated.

I teach at Open Chord Music Store in Knoxville Mondays through Thursdays and on Saturdays. I teach at my home studio in Maryville on Fridays with other weekend lessons by appointment.

I believe that all students are individuals. Lesson plans are tailored to the needs of the individual student. With that said, i typically recommend/use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Books 1-3 for the younger students. Students are encouraged to bring in any books or other media they are interested in learning from

Great Teacher

At the tender young age of 60 i started taking lessons with Robert. He was patient enough to show me the way without me getting discouraged. He not only taught me guitar but helped me pick out instruments and a p.a. system. I really enjoyed the learning experience. Now i am able to play out in front of people and have a lot of fun playing at charity and other events with my friends.

Lance S.

Knoxville, TN

About Lance

I'm 32 years old, and I've been playing the guitar for about 18 years. I truly enjoy teaching people how to play the guitar. I've been doing it for a while to fill some time during the day. I own a business in entertainment and I'm a graduate from MTSU with a degree in Audio Production and Engineering. From my education, I have knowledge and experience in music theory, songwriting techniques, and experience in working with various musicians. I've also played in a few bands.

Having the right instructor is incredibly important if you're a beginner. Just because someone can play the guitar
really well, it doesn't mean they're the right one to get you started. I strive to make my approach to teaching the guitar the same as my approach to playing in bands: keep it fun, friendly, adaptive, inspiring, and be patient. Music should always be shared between friends. So I try to keep that going with the people I teach.

Strategies for Sight Singing
It may seem like instrumentalists have it much easier when it comes to sight reading music; by simply pressing a key or a string, the notes are immediately available to them without any additional thought, and all that’s left to them is to work out duration, dynamics, and tempo. Singers, on the other hand, don't have an instrument to rely on. Taking a song previously unknown to you and delivering a reasonably accurate performance the very first run-through isn’t a talent that everybody has.
