Singing
Finding my inner voice

It's been a year since I started singing lessons with Shelly in my home. Besides her extreme talent, that she is reliable, trustworthy, patient and kindhearted, and my 4 dogs love her as much as I do, Shelly has been the perfect singing teacher for me. I am not a stage performer, nor do I intend to be, but I am a trial attorney and do speak in front of audiences often. After some health issues last year, I decided to conquer the stress in my life and find my inner voice. I love to sing but have had no lessons and rarely sing in front of others. I am not even sure I have any talent. Shelly has been wonderful with helping me find out if I do, but even more importantly, she allows me to have fun with singing. Finding my inner voice is allowing me to find inner peace and strength, and this has been such a great way to relieve stress. I am loving it.

Gained more confidence since my first lesson

Shelly is a wonderful vocal coach. We always have a lot of fun and I always look forward to my lessons. She helps me feel more confident about singing in front of people. Because of Shelly, my singing has made a big improvement since last year. She is an amazing teacher and I am lucky to have her as my coach.

Al P.

Congers, NY

About Al

Born in Portland ME, Al's parents moved around a lot and finally settled in New York. When Al was 10, he took his first lessons in piano, then later trumpet, guitar, drums and at 13 yrs old decided to stick with bass guitar. At 16, Al joined his first band and was hooked. Since then Al has improved his craft studying with numerous instructors and gained real world experience through playing and touring worldwide with many bands and ensembles and today is bassist for Jose Feliciano.

*** Lesson Details ***
Every student is different. I've found that students have vastly different, ages, t
astes, goals, and want to learn for different reasons. They also learn and develop in different ways and at different paces. That said, I use the first lesson to determine goals and a general plan for each student.

I consider myself a "groove" player and in my musical world, my focus is on rhythm section work. To get there you must first learn several skills. Technique, Timing, Ear Training, and Theory are what I consider the 4 main "food groups" in the "diet" of any good musician. My job is to steer each individual student down the path that gets them there at their pace AND to make it fun. After all people don't choose to learn because they have too, they choose to learn because they want to. Why? Because it's cool and it's fun!

I like to dedicate a portion of the lesson to having fun with the instrument. A student may be interested in a certain band or bass player and wants to learn their song. I will ask them to bring me the song (I may already know it) and we'll learn it together. I like to play musical, or instrument related games to help the student learn in an non-stressful, happy and fun way. I think it makes a difference.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music Studio on first floor: 16 channel mixing console, computer music workstation loaded with Pro Tools, Digital Performer, Reason, and other music software, music stands, guitars, electronic drum set, keyboard, bass and guitar amps, seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to have, or to buy a bass guitar, a practice amp with a 1/4" cable, a metronome, a manuscript book, and a pencil.

I can provide a practice amp, metronome and music stand for lessons only. I also can provide on site repairs of their instrument.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in Rock, Blues, Jazz and Funk styles of Music

Had a really nice first lesson with Al. He is a good guy and a we had fun jamming out on a couple jazz standards and talking about scales. He has good knowledge of the instrument and i was happy to see that he played a 6string like myself. I enjoyed the lesson.

Ben's bass playing is experienced and versatile, much like the way he teaches. Since he's fluent in multiple genres - from rock to jazz to ska and more - he's able to incorporate a student's specific musical interests into their lesson and tailor the learning especially to them, which always makes his lessons interesting and exciting.

Sabrina L.

Cross River, NY

About Sabrina

I have been a professional singer for 20 years and started studying singing when I was 12 years old. I have always been passionate about singing and teaching people how to sing with ease. I maintain that singing should feel good and never hurt, if you get a sore throat, something is wrong! My teaching style is supportive and encouraging, I like to focus on the positive and encourage my students to record their lessons so that they can remember all of the technical instruction I give. I was fortunate to have learned from wonderful teachers and studying at The Juilliard School helped to foster m
y love for music and my desire to share my knowledge. I have a yearly recital in my home where my students benefit from watching each other. I look forward to helping you be the best singer you can be!

I have been working with Sabrina for seven years and have seen my voice grow and develop. I have always loved to sing and I went to Sabrina in order to learn how to sing correctly. Sabrina has turned me into a musician! Her way of training in technique is so skilled and kind; I never feel "on the spot" or self-conscious. She is never negative. The most she says is "We'll work on this." I have learned how to use my whole body to support my voice. She has brought my range up beyond anything I ever thought I could do. I can work on a passage over and over and she never tires of it, never loses patience, is always present for support as a teacher and a friend, We are so lucky to have her here. She's rare!

Sabrina is an exceptionally supportive and effective teacher. She makes me feel good about the instrument I have, my voice, and focuses on helping me to master my control of it, as opposed to making me feel like my voice itself is lacking in any way. No matter your voice type, she understands your challenges and issues. Under her tutelage I have progressed enormously and have been able to perform pieces I never thought possible. Listeners have noticed huge changes and ask me all the time what I have done to gain such improvement.

I've been a bass player for many many years and starting focusing on guitar a few years ago. I had a good theoretical background but lacked the knowledge and technique to apply it to the guitar.
Brett was able to teach me all the guitar specific techniques and take my playing to the next level by showing me how to apply my theory knowledge to the fretboard.

I have now been taking lessons for a year and a half and have yet to have one I did not greatly benefit from!

Music Theory · In studio
I've been taking lessons with Brett for over a year now and it's been a fantastic experience. My journey started, however, long before our first meeting.
Over two years ago I decided it was time to up my game and increase my understanding of music theory and music in general. In order to accomplish this I felt I needed a teacher, but not just any teacher. I had a few strict requirements in mind. First, I wanted someone who had a degree in music. Brett's a graduate of Berklee College of Music. Check. As a bass player I wanted a guitarist for a teacher. To me, being able to ask questions and talk to someone who understands the interaction between bass and guitar is key. Brett's a pro guitarist and an accomplished musician. Check again. I also wanted someone who understood the music I listened to and played and was also versed in other styles of music. Again, check.
Brett met and surpassed everything I wanted in a teacher. And to top if off, he's one cool dude. My only regret is not starting sooner.
Great teacher with abundance of knowledge about music theory. He presents himself in a very professional manner and his teaching skills are impeccable. It appears that Brett can teach any level of guitar with ease. I have been taking lesson for approximately 3 months and am learning at a pace that makes me want to join a band.
