Gabrielle E.

Later, she moved to Pittsburgh and received her Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance from Duquesne University and her Master's of Music Degree in Music Technology: Composition/Piano. She has won the Spring Piano Competition of the Duquesne Piano Department for three years in a row. She frequently records all periods of repertoire and also many original compositions. She has a strong passion for performing and writing the highest quality of music. If you are c
onsidering becoming a professional musician or are just interested in developing a rewarding hobby, she will help you accomplish your musical goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
First and foremost I want any potential student to know that I thoroughly enjoy teaching and want to help you explore your hidden talents and reach your fullest potential. With that in mind, the learning environment in my studio is relaxed and fun. I never condescend or put pressure on a student who makes mistakes. I encourage students to try new techniques and make mistakes along the way. I also work very closely with my students to achieve their own personal goals. I know that there are many different types of learners who all have different aspirations and I feel it is my job to ensure that my students are satisfied with their progress. I understand that someone hoping to attend a conservatory will have different needs than a small child. I promise to give nothing less than the highest quality teaching in an environment conducive to learning.

For piano students, I will spend much time on proper technique and making sure the student does not compromise the wrist, fingers, arms, or back which may create discomfort later. In the first 3-6 months a student can expect to learn technique, repertoire, and basic musicianship skills such as sight reading and transposition.

Composition/ Songwriting students will be coached according to what their specific goals and interests are. I incorporate the technical aspects of writing music along with music business which will help students get their music played and recorded.

Music theory students will practice skills such as four part writing, melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation, modulation, roman numeral analysis, sight singing, and score analysis.

I do encourage the use of specific curricula but I am always willing to explore something new if you have a preference or have found success with something else. I hope that music will give my students lifelong enjoyment and I encourage you to come make music with me.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Aeolian Baby Grand Piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect piano students to have their own piano but beginning students can start out on a keyboard if need be. Also, students are responsible for purchasing all books and materials for lessons.

*** Specialties ***
*Teachers classified as a Student Favorite have taught a minimum of 25
lessons and have received the highest feedback rating from students.I specialize in classical piano in all eras from baroque through twenty-first century music. I also am trained in various compositional styles including baroque through twentieth century harmony as well as jazz, pop, and songwriting.

I went into banjo lessons not knowing if I could master the instrument or not, being nearly 70 years old. While by no means a master (and never going to be), I have learned so much from Sam and he has shown such patience with me. I often leave my lessons wondering how he ever puts up with me - but he does. His encourgement, laid-back style, expertise and knowledge of music (plus theory) and the banjo is impressive. His good nature makes my lessons so much more pleasant. I would say Sam is a a great teacher for both a beginner or an accomplished musician or in between. He likes to talk and demonstrate (nice and slowly if requested) so I would recommend hour-long lessons at first.

Diane M.

West Newton, PA

About Diane

DIANE'S PIANO LESSONS. I'm a trained classical pianist/former band musician who played at age 2-1/2. Studied classical piano age 6-18, played in bands 20 years and still fill in with bands occasionally and play solo piano for wedding, parties, banquets, etc. I use Schaum course books with Schaum or Alfred's Classical until advanced enough to play Sonatina's/Concerto's, etc. In the summer, I let the students pick their preferred music. In addition to basic books(Schaum, Scale, Fingerpower, chords, Notespeller, Classical, if the student is interested, in about 2 years I add the extra "outside of
the box things" i.e., playing by ear, writing music, transposing, developing your own style. Lessons geared towards the big picture of students being well-versed in whatever they decide to do with their music and bringing each student to their "Personal Best." I also put the assigned lesson (last 5 min of lesson) on tape/iPhone so students have an audio or visual of assignments. I love doing this & feel blessed to be able to do what I love for a living.

David really worked with my son on his audition song as he is preparing for high school musical audition. Great instruction and constructive feedback. Obvious improvement after one 45 min lesson. David also gave helpful advice regarding auditions and what a director may be looking for.

Should Parents Observe During Voice Lessons?
Should you sit in on your kid's singing lessons? Here, Hayward, CA teacher Molly R. tackles the commonly asked question...   When parents sign their child up for voice lessons, naturally they want to be sure of a few key things: Does the teacher know what he or she is doing?
