About David
I have been a working musician and occasional private music teacher for over 40 years. During that time I had a career in the professional audio and video industry, during which I learned how to successfully deal with people. I recently returned to school and completed a Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree at CSU Sacramento. My goal is to bring excitement and enthusiasm for music and playing an instrument to my students, and to create musicians who will make and enjoy music throughout their lives. I play guitar, bass guitar and flute, and enjoy teaching all of them to all age groups.

*** Lesson Details ***
Playing music is supposed to be fun. Lessons include playing, so they should be fun as well. My lessons are both focused and fun. I believe you get out of music what you put in. If a student doesn't practice in between lesso
ns, I will know. If a student does practice, I will know that as well. My lessons stress not only what to practice, but how. In 3-6 months, the beginning student can expect to be able to make a pleasing sound on the instrument, and be able to play beginning repertoire. Most importantly, the student will be able to play well enough to enjoy the instrument, which inevitably leads to more productive practice and continued improvement. This continued improvement is what lessons are all about.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If I travel to a student's home, I will bring my instrument only. I expect the student to provide all other equipment necessary for the lesson.

MUSIC (see fitness below): Shannon has numerous years experience teaching all skill levels on woodwinds, and beginning-intermediate piano & classical strings, using various approaches to best suit the students learning style, personality and needs.

Shannon is an active musician, who has been featured as a soloist, and in the flute and woodwind sections with various orchestras, chamber ensembles, opera orchestras and musical theatre within the United States, Italy, and Mexico. She is presently Principal Flute of the Baytown Symphony, Director of the Da Capo Chamber Ensembles, and is a substitute musician with the Orquesta Sinfnica
de Monterrey, Symphony of Southeast Texas, and Opera in the Heights.

Shannon has been a faculty member at various colleges, is currently Adjunct Professor of Music at Brazosport College, and also has an active private studio, Leigh Studios. She is the College Music Society South-Central Regional President; and is an Advisory Board member for the Houston Flute Club.

Shannon received her Masters of Music degree in Performance from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. She also studied at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and received her B.A. degree in Performance, and B.S. degree in Music-Business from Winona State University, and has studied with world-renowned instructors.

Shannon has received grants for her work, from the Minnesota State Arts Board, American Federation of Musicians, Rome Festival Orchestra, and the Winona Music Guild, and was the 1997 recipient of the Vivian Menees Nelson Music Award.

Shannon is also a sponsored triathlete and trainer/coach/race director, and gives workshops on the importance of healthy living, nutrition and exercise for musicians. I am pretty easy going. I want you to feel comfortable and at ease, but we do need to focus and can have fun doing it. :)
I utilize various methods for each instrument, which is determined by the students learning style and ability; needs, so this can change as time goes on (not sticking to one particular publishers materials). I have done (and continue to do) extensive research into materials available for each instrument I teach, and supplement with my own, to utilize the best out there for "YOU" for the best possible progress. While ensuring an extremely well-rounded musical education, so you can progress at the best possible rate. Since each student's potential is different, each will progress differently. This is also determined by your dedication to daily practice (the more you practice, the quicker you will progress & the more accomplished you will become). This is a 'Team Effort'; I give the guidance and tools. You practice, utilize learn these tools, and off we go! The sky is the limit!

Dr. Carl S. will be teaching at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical beginning August 2017. His duties include graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class. While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, assisting with the KU Jazz Festival, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen,Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. Sheila's interest in music began at the age of seven when she began private instruction in classical piano, and by the age of ten, she began playing the flute. Sheila received her Bachelor of Music with a degree in Music Education from the University of Redlands, where she studied flute with Sara Andon. There, she performed in the university's Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Orchestra. During her third year at university, she studied abroad at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemet, Hungary.

Sheila has performed in many different venues around the world such as Tivoli Gardens in Denmark, the Edinburgh Trade Center in Scotland, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Greek Theater in Los Angeles and the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge, CA.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal as a music educator is to foster excellence in the art of music through private instruction. I have worked with students of all ages ranging from 5 to older adults.

In my studio, students will learn to read music and have a well rounded music education. This means that we will work on a variety of things such as music theory, music history, and a wide range of repertoire (from Beethoven to the Beatles!) While I have high expectations for my students, I do my best to keep the lessons relaxed and lighthearted. My hope is that the student is always engaged and interested during lessons.

My three expectations:

1. Come prepared both mentally and physically (this is especially important for flutists-- make sure to warm up prior to the lesson!)

2. Don't be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. This is non-threatening territory, I'm here to guide you and help you. Remember that mistakes happen, we're human. Just make sure that you learn from those mistakes so as not to make the same ones and grow from each experience.

3. For parents-- BE INVOLVED! I can't tell you how often I've seen younger students excel when their parents were proactive in the experience. This means encouraging them to practice, coming up with a rewards system, and sometimes sitting in on the lesson to take notes so that you can work on what we did during the lesson at home together. It's difficult for music teachers to compete with iPads, Playstations and television, so let's get creative together!

*** Required Materials ***
Flute students must own a well maintained flute, as an instrument that is out of adjustment causes frustration and can initiate bad habits. In addition, the student must also have a metronome and tuner, a music stand, flute repertoire, and an assignment book for me to write down each week's assignments.

Piano students must have a working acoustic piano or digital piano in their home for piano lessons. The student must also have a metronome, piano repertoire, and an assignment book for each week's assignments.

Zoe has been teaching lessons privately since 2009 and began building her current studio when she moved to Tennessee in 2013. Since moving to Tennessee she has taught over 1000 lessons. Since starting with Take Lessons she has taught lessons in various subjects to over 25 students with her primary focus on Audition Preparation and First Time Flute Students. Her current studio sits at 14 students of various ages and concentrations.

Zoe has played flute in several ensembles over the past ten years. Most recently she performed with the, Middleton Players Theater Pit Orchestra, Middleton Symphony Orchestra, Middleton Wind Ensemble, the University of Wisconsin Madison Concert Band, University of Wisconsin Whitewater Concert Band, the Volunteer State Jazz Ensemble, the Volunteer State Show Stoppers, Vanderbilt University's Spirit of Gold, an
d Tennessee Technological University Concert Band.

Zoe has been featured as a soloist with the Madison Jazz Society and Middleton Concerto Competition, the Volunteer State Jazz Ensemble, Volunteer State Show Stoppers, and appeared on the 2014 and 2015 Sounds of the Season CDs. During High School, Zoe annually competed in the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) Solo and Ensemble Festival earning a total of eighteen medals at the District and State Levels. Over the past nine years, she developed an interest in clarinet and earned a gold medal at WSMA Solo and Ensemble less than six months after she began playing the instrument.

Zoe is a member of the National Association for Music Education which has most recently allowed her to Attend the Wisconsin State Music Educators Convention (October 2012) as well as the National Music Education In-Service Conference (October 2014).

Zoe moved to Nashville Tennessee in 2013 to further her education and continue her career in Music Education. She has recently started working on a series of method books for flute as well as a series of etudes to use with her students, and a dictionary of musical terms by language. She believe in teaching with good technique at an early age to help prevent repetitive motion injuries and a life long enjoyment of music.

My teaching starts with a good foundation for sound and technique and expands to teach music that is fin and inspiring to each individual student. If the student would like to learn to play jazz, I have a method which will shaves off years of hard work and frustration. All my teaching is geared towards giving the student good basics along with a practical application to today's music scene.

I'm a senior citizen without a shred of innate musical talent. LOL The idea of being able to improvise the blues on a saxophone was a wild and unattainable fantasy….until I met Rick. I had already checked out lots of other jazz saxophone teachers online so I knew within the first few lessons that Rick​ was unique. He was able to simplify my problems and help me make great progress right away. With enthusiasm, this celebrated musician took me through all the baby steps - first to get a respectable sound, and then through his ingenious system of improvisation. I'm moving at what I would say is warp speed in learning to improvise, already reaching levels of soloing that were only in my dreams. But the real bonus on top of Rick's fantastic teaching method and system is Rick the man, and the relationship this star musician forms with a student. His humility amazes me at every lesson. Knowing how valuable his time must be, the fact that he encourages me to send recordings between lessons, and sends feedback on each one, is testament to how much he truly cares about a student's progress. It's a gift he generously gives. He is also a genius at how much criticism and how much encouragement a particular student needs. Could there possibly be a better teacher than Rick Rossi? I don't think so.

She is the second flutist of the Bowling Green Philharmonic and member of the Suoniamo Flute Quartet.
