I have a 100% rate of getting my students into their school of choice as of yet. Although I don't guarantee it, I will work relentlessly to make sure you are well prepared though. I will also lend you PDFs of books to help you save a buck.

About Scott
*Brief Update: Both of my 8th grade students were accepted to LaGuardia High School and my 5th grade student was accepted into Mark Twain Middle School for the Gifted & Talented. He also passed his audition for Borough Wide Band. Next up is getting my Junior in high school into All State Orchestra!*

*Update again. My student made all state!

I have been playing drums and percussion since the ripe old age of 9, in 4th grade. Originally wanting to play the clarinet, my music teacher thought my sense of rhythm was too good to waste and placed me in the drum section. I was the only kid who didn't want to play drums. Twenty years later here I am, a professional freelancing percussionist and teacher. The journey to where I am was a long and winding one but I can't imagine it any other way. After learning basic drumming in elementary sch
ool, I continued through middle school. There I was placed on drum kit and thought I was the coolest. I didn't take it too seriously but serious enough to keep playing drum kit. When choosing high schools I wasn't interested in keeping with drums. I only took marching band because it meant no gym. After my first year I was placed in every band the next three years, having to learn timpani and marimba for concert band. I was also recommended to join a city wide concert band, InterSchool orchestras of New York, and haven't left since. I still coach the band and help tons of high school and middle school students hone their craft. Also that year, through ISO, I was given a chance to attend French woods performing arts camp on scholarship where I began my love of playing in musical pit orchestras. Through this time I studied with a couple of teachers and had plenty of coachings with professional percussionists. Upon graduating I have played well over 100 different musicals, played with over 25 different orchestras, and have taught over 100 students both privately and in coachings. I currently run a Drumline out of a private school, coach ISO band, freelance and have a studio of 8 students. That is a short sample of my journey and I hope it inspires you to study with me.

If you choose me as a teacher, I will shape you as an overall musician, not just a "Drummer". What this means is that you won't just learn beats from me, you will learn all the fundamentals of basic to intermediate music theory, from note reading and rhythm to chord changes and ..... You will start on a practice pad and quickly go to a drum kit. Lessons will be half and half, but more 75/25 drumkit, because everything you learn on a pad can translate to the kit! I would also teach you timpani and xylophone if you like so you can broaden your horizons and even get into the middle/high school or college you want. I have most of my books of pdf that I can give you to print or you can purchase your own copies. You would also need to purchase a practice pad and eventually a drum kit. If you don't want to purchase a drum kit then there is almost no reason to study it since you won't be able to practice between lessons. Practicing, let's talk about that. It is expected that you practice the material we learn in the lesson throughout the week. Now I know everyone is busy, but if you can put aside 25 minutes (a sitcom without commercials!!) a day then you will have a better understanding and better retention of the material. Doing this will let us just review the material a little bit and go on to learn new and exciting things.

The bottom line in choosing me? I am a professional musician in the trenches of the nyc music scene and know what it takes to make it.

Positive, patient and motivating, 40 years of playing drums & percussion and over 12 years of private instruction with a wealth of music knowledge to share. Lessons are always designed to be educational, engaging & fun, combining a balance of learning notation, playing by ear & performance with other live instruments! We will find out what interests you most and get you on the drum set right away for fast results!

About John
I have 40 years of playing drums & percussion and 12 years of teaching beginning and intermediate drummers by ear, performance & notation. Preforming drums has brought so much enjoyment to my life and has expanded my cognitive and creative mind more than I would have ever realized when I started in 1978. Teaching/sharing my drumming experience is a passion, my students are taught not only how to play drums but also about music structure (verse, chorus, bridge, etc.), how to perform with other musicians and how to dissect a piece of music. Various styles and rhythms are taught and rudiments are covered thoroughly - nothing better than an impressive double stroke roll! I have always been a teacher that I feel can understand each personality and adjust my approach to each lesson as needed and furthermore, I always treat my students with res
pect, courtesy and patience which I find makes them more apt to relax, listen, learn, feel the music and have fun!

I have been playing drums for more than 10 years and have been teaching for more than 3. Throughout that time, I have played across the country in New York City and even in Japan. I am currently a Jazz Studies Major at Sacramento State University. My goal is to make every student a well-rounded drummer who knows whats going on when they are in any type of musical situation. My favorite style to play is jazz, specifically bebop, but I am well-rounded in all other styles such as rock, Latin, blues, funk, and country.

In my lessons, I base the material on the student depending on how advanced they are. If the student is just starting out, I will teach them the basics such as holding the drumsticks properly, basic rudiments, reading rhythms, learning about the hardware, and so on.

If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask :D

About Gabriel
I started playing drums when I was in second grade and formed a band with my 2 older brothers who played bass and guitar. It was something to do when we younger but when I got into high school, I took playing drums a lot more seriously. I was in a very competitive marching band playing bass drum and tenors in the drumline and at the same time, I was introduced to jazz drumming. The improvising aspect of jazz drumming sparked my love for it because the freedom it gave me to express myself was something drumline could not do. After getting state recognition for my playing in jazz bands, I transferred to a high school with a more intensive jazz program. I am currently a jazz studies major at California State University, Sacramento. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

I believe music is an art form that offers one of the greatest paths to intelligence a human can achieve. Learning and teaching music are key parts of how all culture was originally created and transmitted. Sharing the knowledge and expertise I have acquire over the years with students is very gratifying, but so is receiving their unique input on any matter. I believe that our classes are ways for us to connect to students and for them to play, be creative, explore and keep me also on the path of discovery. It's really a two way street.

About Andres
Andrés Fonseca

Drummer, Composer, Producer, Educator

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Andrés Fonseca started playing piano at an early age, but soon after he discovered his true passion for percussion instruments. After completing his studies at the Universidad Sergio Arboleda in Bogotá, he won a scholarship to study music at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from Berklee with a dual degree, cum laude, in Contemporary Composition & Production as well as Jazz Drumset Performance.

Since coming to the Unites States, Andrés has performed in major venues such as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Apollo Theater in New York City; the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; and the Detroit Jazz Festival, among others. He has released his own compositions with his band, Unlimited Perception, in addition to recording f
or and playing with many of his peers.

Andrés’ unique voice--in both drums and his own compositions--blends the sound and tonalities of modern jazz with traditional Latin music. His work interweaves traditional, ancestral, specifically Colombian music, with modern drumset and its evolution mainly through jazz and contemporary music.

I'm an easy-going and passionate drum and percussion educator who truly enjoys working with students, not only to achieve their short term goals, but to share a life-long love of music and a desire to continue learning. I believe in fostering a student’s love of music. While I wholeheartedly devote lessons to developing a strong foundation of fundamentals, I also try demonstrate how they apply to a student’s passion. Simply, I like to teach how to learn and appreciate music - a skill that can be applied to all areas of education and life. If you want to learn something that I don't know, then we can learn it together. If you have other musical interests, like beat-making on your smartphone or playing other percussion instruments, we can incorporate those interests into the lessons. I believe that we can be complete musicians, not JUST drummers, so I like to involve music making into all we do in our time together.

About Christian
Hello prospective student! I am a drummer, percussionist and producer with nearly 25 years of playing and teaching experience in the New York and Los Angeles areas. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Management from William Paterson University in NJ with a playing concentration in classical and orchestral percussion, although ROCKING OUT on the drum set is my real love.

I studied drum set with Tommy Igoe, bandleader and best-selling author of Groove Essentials and Great Hands For a Lifetime. I currently play in local L.A. bands Little Galaxies and Glowbird, as well as around town wherever I am hired. I have performed live with well-known pop stars as well as provided incidental music for music videos.

In addition to that, I am an avid songwriter and producer and I really look forward to incorporating electronic music into our lesso
ns together.

In my lessons, I will start with a few custom lesson plans to gauge your skill level before moving on to method books. For beginning students, I like to focus on what makes music universally fun. We work on listening to music, feeling the pulse, and recognizing the rhythm. From there, I will introduce you to music notation and what it means when translated to sound. I also try to plant the seed of good technique by focusing on posture and stick handling.

As you become more advanced, I like to focus heavily on reading and developing playing techniques. At this point, I introduce a few method books for content to practice. We'll get started with Stick Control by George L. Stone to develop a foundation in dexterity. From there, we will use Tommy Igoe's Great Hands For A Lifetime to further develop healthy playing technique in a system based on rudimental drumming. Having been a student of Tommy's, I am uniquely capable of teaching this method to you.

On drum set, I typically start with Joel Rothman's Basic Rock Beats before moving on to John Lombardo's Rockin' Bass Drum. These two books cover many variations on the rock beat that are suitable for almost any playing style or occasion. As you develop into a proficient intermediate drummer, we will start to work through Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials books for learning different genres and styles, with the focus being on groove, sound and musicality. I love getting to this stage in our face-to-face lessons because I can record you playing along to the songs in my studio.

At this point, you'll be able to handle mostly any reading and playing situation, so we may move on to more advanced studies like independence, polyrhythmic beats, odd time signatures, and linear time playing. From there, you're only limited by your imagination and desire to keep going!

I look forward to starting this journey with you!

Christian Johnson is one of the finest percussion instructors I have ever known. He worked on our marching band staff for several years serving as the drumline instructor. Thanks to his patience, professionalism, and wonderful personality, the drumline grew to unseen levels and helped thrust the band into one of the finest in the state for many years.

I strongly recommend Christian Johnson for any type of percussion teaching.

I started a bit behind the other kids in elementary school band. Chris was the drum instructor for the high school marching band at the time and my band teacher highly recommended him for private lessons.

Chris was able to get me caught up to the other drummers within a couple months. I was finally able to read sheet music fluently and began to be assigned more advanced parts to play in the school band. Each week Chris gave me homework assignments such as working on different rudiments or reading and playing different types of percussion sheet music (bells, xylophone, etc). My lessons with a Chris paid off over the years, as I was able to join the high school marching band as a middle schooler and went on to win accolades for my drumming in the school plays. Everything I learned and accomplished most definitely stemmed from my lessons with Chris!

Christian is a very knowledgeable and patient drum instructor. As a music teacher and producer myself, I like to have a good understanding of instruments I don't play such as drums, and Christian has helped me have a much deeper understanding of drumming techniques, concepts, exercises, and styles. He is quite versatile, has a great understanding of music, and is a very effective communicator. I highly recommend!

Before I met Corey, I was a recovering drummer, transitioned to Bass. All self taught. Little did i know, I was a ROOT NOTE player just getting by. After Just over a year being taught by Corey, my skills have advanced so drastically. It's a great experiance being taught by the BEST. I now have bands calling me to sub or wanting me to join. If you're looking to advance your chops, or maybe you're a beginner, Corey is THE ONE for you.

I am absolutely amazed how laughter, insight and fun amplifies the learning experience. Corey helped me start, begin and continue on this journey to become the musician that I want to be. Corey listens to his students and in turn teaches us to really listen.
Corey has a wealth of knowledge and experience in making and teaching the art of music. He is always encouraging his students to become more than they perceive themselves to be.
16+ years ago I went 'live' for the first time with Corey's encouragement.
I was absolutely petrified.
I was convinced that it was possible to urinate down both pant legs simultaneously. Clearly I was mistaken.
That first introduction to musical performance by Corey has lead to so much in my life.
Under Corey's instruction I have played many styles of music. This has always been done in an encouraging, empowering, engaging and fun environment.
Please look at the first sentence of this review.
His teaching methods lead to positive results.
Become the musician that you wish to be.

About Chad
Hello there. My name is Chad. I’ve been writing, recording, and performing music for over 25 years now. I’ve spent most of my adult life on stages and in recording studios. I’ve been blessed to tour the country and play with some touring members of the Dave Matthews Band, the Steve Winwood Band, the Gregg Allman Band, and the Rolling Stones. I’ve played drums on over 30 studio recordings as a session musician. I’ve also engineered and produced albums as an artist and for other artists in my studio. These experiences have given me the perspective to know what it takes to be a successful musician.

I teach beginning to professional drum students how to serve the song while being versatile, responsive, and dynamic. We focus on developing the fundamentals of reading, reliable technique, and listening skills. All this is in the pursuit of be
ing able to express yourself and “speak” through the instrument. My primary goal is to teach you how to become your own teacher, so you can continue to study and improve.

Recording students can expect to learn how to take a song from a rough idea and transform it into a radio-ready finished product. We learn the important concepts of recording and mixing right in my creative and comfortable studio located in Daytona Beach.

There is no greater joy for me than to help someone accomplish their musical goals! Teaching and mentoring is an honor and a privilege that I don’t take lightly. I would love to help you in any way I can. I look forward to meeting you!
