Saxophone was the first instrument, aside from Piano, that I started to play. I started in 4th grade with this instrument until my middle school teacher in 6th grade asked me to switch to French horn. I continued to perform on Saxophone in our school's Jazz ensemble in Middle School and High School. I no longer play the Saxophone but can still teach students how to play the instrument!

About Beckie
Hi!
My name is Beckie and I have played music for all of my life. I play and teach many different instruments such as the French horn, trumpet, piano, saxophone, mandolin, guitar, and voice.

In 2017, I graduated from UCLA with my Masters in Music on French horn. In 2010, I graduated from Chapman University with two degrees in music- music performance on French horn and music education.

My first job was as at a Montessori Academy elementary school, where I was the brass coach for 3 years. This is where I fell in love with teaching. I have been teaching privately for 15 years now and love the one-on-one attention that I can give the students.

I have worked with many great organizations like the Los Angeles Philharmonic and various music studios around Los Angeles.

I currently am a freelance musician. I perform with differen
t orchestras and groups all around the Los Angeles area. I am also apart of a horn ensemble called the Thursday Horn Club. I have performed in such wonderful venues as the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Sydney Opera house, in which I was able to premier a piece!

I look forward to working with you or your child in helping to start or continue a musical instrument!

*** Lesson Details ***
When I teach lessons, I like to check in with the student to see how their day was and how practicing throughout the week went. I am very patient and will teach at the student's pace. I expect the student to practice during the week, even if for just 10 minutes a day. I will always work with a student as long as it takes to have them understand what is difficult for them musically.

For music, I try to find free options but books may be a better option. When we choose a book to play out of, I like to choose a book together so that the parent and the child are happy about the selection. Books vary based on what the needs are for each student. Books are to be purchased by the parent.

I usually play my instruments with the students, but being a freelance musician, I may need to save my chops for an upcoming gig. Not always, but happens from time to time :)

I also have a 24-hour cancellation/lesson change policy. If you are late for your lesson, I will try to accommodate the time but may have students or rehearsals afterward so it will not always be a guarantee. If you are going to be late, please text me BEFORE the scheduled lesson.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lesson space is in my home w/ seating for parents and music stand for students. I also have a cat and a dog, so if you are allergic, please let me know!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to provide the music books and their own instruments and music stand.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical genres of playing but I am able to teach all different styles of music.

Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.

A woodwind player since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach intermediate and beginning saxophone lessons.

About Thomas
Piano, woodwinds, trumpet, composition
Chords, sight-reading, theory, jazz, classical, and pop

No one ever regrets learning an instrument… yet many grow old wishing they had taken music lessons! A talent they’ll be able to develop their entire life, your children will thank you for giving them the chance to learn music. And bonus points for you: after just a couple years, you’ll have free entertainment every Christmas!

Or maybe YOU’RE the one that wishes to learn! It is never too late to begin learning an instrument. Everybody has the ability, and if you’re determined and interested, there’s nothing stopping us from achieving this very special goal. (Interested in learning to compose? Scroll to the bottom to learn more.)

Everybody learns differently, and everybody likes different things. Whether it’s improvising or singing alon
gside a song you love or reading through a classical concerto, I’ll help prepare you or your child to tackle a wide variety of styles, without missing out on any of the basics that turn good players into phenomenal musicians. We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun. Music lessons include:

1. Building a really strong foundation so it's easy to interpret or understand any part, and to play it with the right amount of practice.

2. Learning to sight-read music, so you can play it well as soon as possible.

3. Learning how to improvise (make-up) music, learn music by ear, and to understand and create chords, which lets you play music in different ways.

4. Play different styles from classical to jazz to popular music.

5. Learning how to practice efficiently so you can learn music as fast as possible.

6. Composing our own original music.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.

It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.

Learning an instrument is one of those few skills that will genuinely last you your whole life. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it.

Now get out there and make some music! But start by signing up for lessons. I can’t wait to get started!

---

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.

Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. Step by step, we’ll work our way there.

We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!

Thomas is a great piano teacher who is incredibly professional, patient and helpful. He is fantastic at noticing deficiencies in your playing and is able to get you to fix them without ever being overbearing or too harsh. He's incredibly patient, knowledgeable and incredibly flexible in his schedule. There were times when I had to change my lesson times and he always made sure to find time for us to get our lesson in. Thomas offers the best lessons for the best price! Whether you're a casual player or looking to help improve your chops, Thomas should be your first choice.

I've just picked up flute after (literally) 50 years and been taking lessons with Thomas for several months. Lessons are enjoyable, and Thomas has taken great pains to gear them toward my goals for learning. Every lesson includes technique, musicality, and theory, with the theory taught through practical application rather than just as an abstraction. He also gives me guidance on how to practice, which was one of my key goals for taking lessons. I was concerned about whether I could find someone who understood how to teach adults - and am very pleased that I succeeded!

With 11 years experience, classical and jazz background, I can have your child ahead of the class or you ready to play in any setting with any material, written or improvised.
Already play? As musicians there’s always something we can learn from each other!

About Stephen
Why should you take lessons from me?
There are some musicians who teach only as a way to make ends meet and there are those who are passionate about education in general. There are some music teachers who will show you how to play songs and call it a day. That's giving the hungry a fish. I prefer to teach the hungry how to catch fish. Why you use a certain rod, line, lure, how to find fish, what fish are edible, how to drive a boat, etc...In musical terms this translates to things such as why you hold an instrument a certain way, the logic behind finger positions, how to construct chords/scales then use them, how to count musically and why, etc...I teach how to think musically and creatively on and off of the page and have a vested interest in the progress of my students.

Learning an instrument, like learning a language, should be an interactive experience with a continuous flow of feedback. It should also be fun, with the opportunity to use each new skill in real life and on a daily basis.

Over the past 12 years, I have had the opportunity to study the saxophone (as well piano, composition, arranging, film scoring, and songwriting) with some of the most creative and talented teachers from Los Angeles, New York, and Portland, OR, including world-renowned saxophonists Bob Mintzer (of the Yellowjackets) and Bob Sheppard. Through my years of studying and teaching beginning and intermediate saxophonists, I believe it is the teacher's job to "teach the student how to teach themselves" by giving them the tools and critical feedback needed to excel not only in learning a new instrument, but in all aspects of music and life.

About Aaron
I am a professional saxophonist, composer, and songwriter with a particular passion in writing music for films and video games. Growing up near Portland, Oregon, I was surrounded by friends who were engrossed by jazz, classical, and rock music, and immediately wanted to be a part of it. Throughout high school, I had the opportunity to perform in New York City, Atlanta, and Monterey with the award-winning American Music Program, as well as record on numerous occasions with Grammy-award-winning artist Esperanza Spalding.

Since coming to live in Los Angeles, CA in 2013, I have been involved in both the jazz and pop music scenes as a performer and arranger, leading my own groups and music directing for others. I have also been involved in the film scene, composing the music for 16 short films, 5 independent video games, and a 3-episode
web series. (You can also see/hear me play a few notes in 2014's "Whiplash")

In my lessons, I am happy to cover everything from beginning techniques on the instrument, being able to improvise in any context or genre, and working in a recording studio setting.

I strongly believe in the values of listening, improvising (both in music and in life), and perceiving every instance and detail as a chance to learn. These are the values on which I base my teaching, as well as my own music.

I am a lover of all kinds of music, movies, video games, hiking, traveling, and Mexican food.

I will make it a priority to get to know you on a personal level and to become familiar with your personal musical needs and goals. I have a warm personality, am extremely friendly, and will strive to get to know you.

I will show you the fundamentals of sight reading, technique and theory and can also incorporate your favourite songs into your lessons (if there's any in particular that you would like to learn).

About Osvaldo
I've been playing clarinet for 16 years and have not stopped ever since. Music lessons was first introduced to me at the age of 8 by my godfather. He taught me basic music theory with the piano and trumpet. I gave up the trumpet at age 12 and moved on to the clarinet and played it in a community band named "Banda Juvenil Solaga, USA, Oaxaca."

By the time I made it to the university (CSULA), I began getting lessons from Helen G. Castro (She has and still is one of the best mentors I've ever gotten). I've performed 5 years with the Cal State LA Wind Ensemble under the conducting of Dr. Emily Moss (Another great mentor. She's one of the reasons why I decided to pursue a career in music education).

I've graduated in 2015, BM in the field of Music Education. Am still planning to pursue a Masters in Music Performance. But first, I still
have to save up.

I'm currently teaching in the Saturday Conservatory of Music and the New Life Vision Church. I'm private teaching as well; giving clarinet, saxophone, and oboe lessons.

It is my primary objective to figure out how each of my students learns best. Then I customize their lessons so they get the most out of each session.

My students are always challenged, and I make it a priority to find interesting and fun material to work on.

Learning an instrument should be enjoyable, and there are many times the instrument can seem “too hard”. It is in these rare instances that I have been able to save my students from throwing in the towel. I find another way to teach the material that they will enjoy

About Nicholas
Hello my name is Nick! I am so excited to get started working on the saxophone with you.

I make it a priority to find out how you learn best. Knowing this helps me customize the delivery of instruction so that you will get the most out of each lesson!

I have also been a professional instrument repair technician for the last 5 years. Knowing how instruments work, and seeing common damage on student instruments has given me a special understanding for limitations of each instrument, and unique methods of circumventing these obstacles!

I teach saxophone with the student's musical interests as my main priority! Whether the student wants to play jazz, classical music, or pop, I work with the student through their favorite songs that they want to learn and teach technique to match their goals. I have experience performing and recording in a wide variety of different settings and genres as well as a background in music theory and composition. I aim to impart these skills to all of my students!

About Thomas
I'm a saxophonist, composer, and arranger with a Bachelor's of music in Jazz Studies from the University of Southern California. I'm also a flautist, clarinetist, and pianist with experience performing in anything from pit orchestras for musicals, electronic pop bands, to Disneyland!

My students can expect to see a great amount of improvement in tone production, embouchure, sight reading, and overall musicality. I usually assess how to teach each student individually based on what genre or kind of music they want to learn! If a student loves a certain recording by any artist, we will listen to it and work through how to learn it and perform it together while laying a solid foundation for great technique.

I've been a saxophonist for more than 10 years and been taught through a combination of formal education at USC, private lesson
s, and performing experience. I have taken lessons with world renowned saxophonists such as Bob Mintzer and Bob Sheppard. I know what it's like to be a student and in my years of teaching experience I have taught students of every level.

I hope to share my love of music with you!
