Key signatures, time signatures, complex rhythms, counterpoint, and chord progressions! Music theory is essential for any kind of musician and is one of my favorite subjects to teach. After a short amount of time, you will be able to use our music theory knowledge to do a bit of composing!

About Christoffer
Perform - Create - Build a solid foundation in music while gaining confidence, leadership, and flexibility.

*** NEW POLICIES ***
I'm currently only taking students that can commit to weekly lessons. I no longer allow 24-hr cancellations, which is a policy Takelessons promotes, but I don't find it useful for the teacher or the student. If you'll be out of town, I allow 4 cancellations per year. I also take off these dates: July 4, Thanksgiving/Black Friday, and December 24 - January 1. If you need to reschedule for another reason, I will try to find another time during that week for your lesson, but if it's an exceptionally busy week I may not be able to find a time-slot. You will still be obligated to pay for the lesson.

*** Bio ***
I have an MFA in Music Composition and Piano Performance from California Institute of the Arts and
a BA in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara. I began piano at the age of 7 and composition at age 15. Teaching has always been important to me. I started providing lessons in high school and learned that giving musical knowledge is just as important as acquiring the skills it takes to be a musician. Studying with me will help you become a well-rounded musician with the ability to play the type of music you want to play.

Constantly composing, film scoring, and performing, I'm a very active musician that works with classical musicians, rock musicians, and everything in between. I teach a variety of instruments and will cater lessons to your styles and interests. I'm also a recording artist and work with music software such as Ableton Live, Native Instruments, and Sibelius. I would love to teach you how to compose and record your own music in whichever genre you prefer.

*** Lesson Details ***
Many of my students have studied music in the past, but weren't able to keep the passion. I pride myself as a very enthusiastic teacher that works hard at making lessons fun and interesting for any age and background. All of my students (from 3 years old to 60 years old) enjoy music and practice very hard. You will be provided with a solid foundation in theory, aural skills, technique, and creativity, giving you the ability to carve your own path in music. You will learn the correct way to play your instrument and develop the intuition to command it expressively.

I've been studying ukulele with Chris for a year and a half now. I went from absolutely no background in music to really being able to play the instrument pretty quickly. Chris has the patience of Job and a real ability to explain music and playing technique in a way that is incredibly easy to understand. I learn something new every week and he can teach as quickly or as slowly as I want to learn that week. If he can teach me to play, he can teach you to play!

Having been a music major in college, I am well versed in every aspect of music theory and notation, and how it relates to performance.

About Rob
Originally from Chicago, I attended Chicago Musical College for 2 years before moving to Calif. and receiving my B.A. in music from Cal. State Northridge. I also have an M.A. in Education from there. I have been a band director in public schools for over 40 years. My bands have won over 50 1st place awards in music competitions. I have been playing keyboard professionally since the age of 14. I truly enjoy working with both kids and adults on a one on one basis, and provide a relaxed and friendly, yet goal-oriented experience.

*** Lesson Details ***
In each lesson, students will work on technique, music theory, and learn pieces (both from the method book and from supplementary material). I choose material for each student to use based on age, ability, and interest. I don't use a "one size fits all" curriculum. Although lessons are r
elaxed, I do expect students to do their part and work on the assigned materials at home. In addition,I enjoy playing along with students as soon as possible.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music Room: upright piano, chair, sports memorabilia, room for parents to sit in on lesson

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect students to provide instrument (except piano) and music (which I would select)

*** Specialties ***
Can teach any school band instrument and keyboard

About Justin
I studied Jazz Arranging, with an emphasis on guitar at the University of North Texas, where I was in the top 10% of my class. I have played many different musical styles in many different settings, and feel I have the knowledge required to help students reach their musical goals. I've performed with Vern Monet, J.B. Williams, and many more, and have opened for Xzibit, Al Jarreau, The Ying Yang Twins, Tom Scott, Kim Richmond, and many more.

*** Lesson Details ***
I want my students to learn to play whatever music they love. I've studied jazz the most, but have thoroughly studied a whole lot of other styles, and I've helped students learn all kinds of different music - Jazz, Rock, Pop, Rap, Classical, Funk, Indian Classical Music, Flamenco, Afro-Cuban, etc... I'm rather laid back as to WHAT students learn, but I DO need to see progress
in whatever it is they're working on. After 3-6 months my students learn different methods to advance they're guitar technique, and will have added at least several, if not a whole lot of songs, solos, licks, etc... to their repertoire.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Dining room/Music room set up. Chairs available for parents. Parking available. One dog and one cat.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide my own guitar, amplifier, and teaching aides, and students should have their own guitar, and recommended books are helpful.

*** Specialties ***
Jazz, Gospel, Classical, Blues, Rock (all kinds), Country, Bluegrass, Funk, Soul, Reggae, Hip-Hop, African, Indian Classical

I had to learn a few tunes on guitar for mother's day, so I called Justin Walker Music. At first, I only wanted to know a few tabs and how to read/play them, but after a couple of weeks, I was learning chord progressions and proper picking techniques. I was provided simple, easy to understand steps that took my playing where I wanted to go and more. I'll continue taking lessons because of the inspiration for growth I've found within.

One of the best out there

Justin is an amazing instructor. After only a few months, he was able to guide me to a place where I could play much more complex music than I ever thought I could. Other teachers I've had may have taken a longer road to present me with the challenges that Justin has presented me with, however a great teacher is not afraid to see their students excel as quickly as possible. Justin has always challenged me to be my best in a positive and supportive way. He comes across as a teacher who genuinely cares about my success as a guitar player and he has the knowledge and ability to help me take steps much more confidently and quickly than I myself thought I could. He has always been patient and extremely encouraging, and I would highly recommend him for anyone who wants to begin playing or wants to improve their skills on guitar.

Music Theory can be tough to grasp at first. We will show you how fun music theory can be once you figure it out. We will go over whatever you want to learn, if you have specific concerns, or we can start fresh and just move forward from there!

About Judi
Hi everyone! I've been teaching in a variety of areas for many years in many different respects. I teach voice lessons, and audition coaching. I've been doing that for a long time! During my "day-job" years, I was an analyst, and I'm especially skilled with Microsoft Excel. And I LOVE teaching people how to make magic on that program. I have done projects that included creating databases, training departments on the use of said databases, taught entire departments at Jet Propulsion Laboratory how to migrate to Microsoft Outlook from (the archaic) Eudora.

My musical talents run parallel with my affinity for numbers. In my life, it has manifested in music composition, arranging, and musical direction. And, of course, PERFORMANCE! I've performed in and around the Los Angeles area for many years. I own a professional Christmas Caroling co
mpany that I direct and sing in as well. So I'm a performer, and a small business owner! So come see what I can offer!

When I first looked at a piece of sheet music, I was lost. It was like I was trying to read a foreign language. And in some ways, it is. Once I understood the rules, just like grammar, it became much more clear. I like to start slow and make sure that the fundamentals are there and build on top of that week after week. Having attended the Berklee College of Music, I’ve learned music theory from some of the finest musicians in the world and can share it with you too.

About Darrell
Hello! My name is Darrell. I’m currently a student online at Berklee College of Music where I am studying recording and producing. Additionally, I’ve been playing guitar since I was in second grade. Music to me is the air I breathe and am truly passionate about it. I always aim to make lessons as fun as possible. If we’re not having fun, what’s the point of putting in all the effort?

I can teach students how to play guitar, read sheet music, understand basic music theory, and even the basics of working in Pro Tools.

My primary playing style is rock based, but am willing to adjust based on you’re preferred playing style.

I hope to meet you so that we can get your musical journey started!
