I teach students of all ages on all the brass instruments. With more than 30 years of teaching experience, I tailor my teaching to the individual needs of both students and parents, and I like to make our lessons fun and productive. I cover all the basics of playing, from correct breathing to correct style, and I impart a deep knowledge and appreciation of music to my students as well. I offer flexible scheduling, with sessions varying in length from 30 to 90 minutes, to help fit all budgets.

I have 20+ years of experience playing trumpet and have played in a variety of ensembles (concert band, jazz band, marching band, orchestra, rock/soul). Given my Michigan public school teaching experience, I am adept at teaching all levels of trumpet from beginning to advanced. Our trumpet lessons will focus on the fundamentals (buzzing, lip slurs, technique) but will also cover more creative concepts (phrasing, improvisation).

In the past 4 years, I have tutored dozens of students and worked with different trumpet players in my area. As a music major at the University of Illinois, I seek a way to continue my passion for teaching and seeing students develop into wonderful players. Trained in general music, theory, and skills in teaching, I can truly connect with your student and ensure that they gain knowledge and learn to love playing their horn!

The most valuable way a student can learn is if he or she has a positive connection with the teacher. In my case, I ensure that I understand not only the student's strengths and places for improvement, but also the uniqueness of his or her character and what teaching methods the student responds to. Every child is unique in how they learn, and all deserve a positive experience without intimidation and impatience from teachers. Teaching music also goes hand in hand with teaching your student dedication, work ethic, and strong character!

I have been a musician for 30yrs. with Alto Sax being my Primary Instrument. Being a Woodwind player I also play Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, and Percussion. I have performed in many large/medium/small venues with many Bands and Ensembles throughout my career. I have also, been a Georgia Certified Teacher, member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, and member of the Music Educators National Conference for 14yrs. Most recently as an educator in Clayton County I performed with other musicians at a County production of "The Wiz".

Trumpet:
A trumpet is a musical instrument commonly used in classical and jazz ensembles. The trumpet group contains the instruments with the highest register in the brass family. They are played by blowing air through almost-closed lips (called the player's embouchure), producing a "buzzing" sound that starts a standing wave vibration in the air column inside the instrument. I begin teaching from the beginning with the very basics of breathing, embouchure, fingerings, reading, notes, rhythms, songs, scales, theory and improvisation.
