I've been teaching Music Theory for over three years. I treat these lessons much like a classroom setting in which I instruct the basic tenants of music theory in order to help students understand it in accordance with their instrument of choice (including voice). An introduction to orchestration and how their instrument functions within the orchestra will also be instructed. We will use classwork and homework to detail what is instructed as well as multimedia to aid in our learning!

Hey there, everyone!

My name is Milton Carl Jackson II and I teach vocal, guitar, piano, and musical theatre lessons in the Inland Empire area.

I help those young, middle-aged, and not-as-young tap into their own soul through music so that they may help others find theirs as well. I believe that in order to entertain others with your voice or your instrument, one must first be able to entertain oneself - all the while having fun doing it! As a recent graduate of the University of California, Davis with a double major in Music History & Ethnomusicology and African-American & African Studies; a former co-host of the popular hip-hop radio show ATF Radio: All Things Fresh on KDVS 90.3 FM; a former Music Director of The Afterglow of UC Davis; and a recently graduate of the University of Redlands with a Master's in Music Education, I hav
e come in contact and learned from a vast amount of different musicians and professionals. A classically-trained bass-baritone with roots in R&B, Soul, Rock, Pop, and Jazz, I have aspirations to help each and every student realize their full musical potential.

As a teacher I fall somewhere in between strict and laid back. For instance, if you don't practice I won't scold you, but I will remind you that you can only be as good as you work to be. If you don't want to put in the effort you will waste your time and money, as well as not receive the results that you were desiring.
Our lessons will consist of many vocal exercises, go
od posture, and breathing techniques. One rule that I have is that I don't move you on to another song until you have successfully learned all you can from the first one you try. There is no point in learning another song when you have only learned the first one at a mediocre level.
If you are serious about becoming a better singer/musician you will enjoy our lessons.
I encourage my students to strive for excellence and will do all I can to draw that out of you.

George, was very patient, kind, and seem very knowledgeable. He seems to understand the pedagogy of teaching to kids and realize they all learn differently. I personally think he went above and beyond for my Son first class and for our first introduction. He offered a more modern approach method of teaching music and Piano to my son who so far seem more receptive in learning and practicing. Will se where that take us but I am very please so far.

Music has been a part of my life since I was 5 years old, when my father would record my brother and I singing. I always loved singing and learned many of my favorite songs as a child.

I started playing the trumpet in the 4th grade, which has led me all the way to receiving my degrees in Trumpet Performance and Music Education! I was lucky enough to attend one of the nation's top music schools, The Peabody Institute, and I now work toward my Master's degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have enjoyed performing in everything from big-band-lead to principal trumpet in the orchestra, leading brass quintets and brass ensembles, and much more! The trumpet has been a huge passion for as long as I can remember now!

While I was learning songs as a child, I decided I wanted to join a band! Now here we are 10 years later and
I've have the fortune of performing as a lead singer in bands across the country, and let me tell you there is no bigger thrill than getting in-front of a crowd full of cheering fans, performing music you love.

I've also been playing the guitar for just under 10 years. Playing the guitar has been both a complete joy, but also a fantastic learning experience. I have been learning songs of my favorite artists and even written my own material,and having the opportunity to immerse myself in my favorite music and create music of my own has taught me so much more about music and being a musician. I hope to impart this experience onto all of my students.

Whether it's trumpet, voice, or guitar, I love all things music and my #1 objective is to for my students to learn how it feels to experience what music REALLY has to offer, so to you reading this, let's make some noise!

For starters, understand that you're going to have a blast! Within months of working together, I'll have you playing your favorite songs, or feeling prepared for that upcoming audition. I remember what it was like to have second thoughts about auditioning and performance, and I'll make sure those thoughts are a thing of the past for you!

During our lessons, I enjoy addressing the material you have to work on, whether in school or just for your own enjoyment. At the same time, I will present music and materials of my own, and I encourage you to do the same!

Vocal students will bring a bottle of water. Trumpet students will have their own valve oil and mouthpiece (if not originally included with your horn).

Trumpet methods include (not limited to) Arban's, Clarke, Sachs, Rubank, Getchell, Adam, Schlossberg, Colin, Bai Lin.

Vocal Lessons

I've been taking lessons with Matt for about 2 months now. Right away it was a very comfortable environment and vibe, which is important, especially as a beginning, aspiring singer. Takes the lessons slow and easy going at first, then jumps into exercises and focuses on directly what style the student is interested in. Very awesome dude, would definitely recommend! Thanks Matt!

I have been playing guitar for 14 years and teaching guitar and bass for 7 years. I have worked as a private and group guitar instructor at several music education establishments in the Chicago, Los Angeles and in Eugene, Oregon as well. I have also worked as a band coach for youth groups, where I taught them cover songs, helped them write their own songs and prepared them for live performances.
I studied at Columbia College Chicago majoring in Classical Guitar.
I started taking private guitar lessons as a teenager for several years and played in my high school jazz band along with original rock bands. While in high school, I was able to study with popular Chicago rock virtuoso guitarist Kevin M. Buck, where I first learned music theory and was inspired to be more studious with the guitar.

I'm a patient teacher that's passionate about guitar and helping students reach their musical goals whether they are casual players or serious musicians. For beginners, I use Hal Leonard instructional guitar books along with paper handouts and sheet music. I believe it's important for everyone to learn the fundamentals of music to create a strong base of skills in order to continue playing and learning music throughout one's life. For more experienced players, I like to teach various modern rock/pop songs, classical guitar songs, picking patterns, finger picking patters, improvisation, scales and music theory. I teach nylon string acoustic, steel string acoustic guitar and electric guitar and bass
I believe the most basic goal for a guitar student is to be able to play a song in it's entirety, whether it's by themselves or with other musicians/music students. I believe that some of the most important music skills are learned while actually playing with other musicians. It is crucial when learning an instrument to be able to play in 'real time'; playing music with a steady sense of rhythm.

It is incredibly important for students to have a general understanding of music theory, regardless of their instrument. Music theory is the core of the music that we play and listen to, and it is a vital part of every student's music education. The point of music theory is to show students how music works, and for that reason, every music student should be exposed to it at some level.

Having started piano at the age of 7, I was taught music theory at a very beginning of my music education. I studied it throughout my childhood and into my collegiate years. I can teach this subject in detail and help the student develop a clear understanding of the music that they read and play.

About Sheila
Sheila's interest in music began at the age of seven when she began private instruction in classical piano, and by the age of ten, she began playing the flute. Sheila received her Bachelor of Music with a degree in Music Education from the University of Redlands, where she studied flute with Sara Andon. There, she performed in the university's Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Orchestra. During her third year at university, she studied abroad at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemet, Hungary.

Sheila has performed in many different venues around the world such as Tivoli Gardens in Denmark, the Edinburgh Trade Center in Scotland, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Greek Theater in Los Angeles and the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge, CA.

3, Sheila graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Masters degree in Flute Performance where she studied flute with Sandra Kipp. At CSUN, she performed in the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Northridge Flute Quartet, and various chamber ensembles. *** Lesson Details ***
My goal as a music educator is to foster excellence in the art of music through private instruction. I have worked with students of all ages ranging from 5 to older adults.

In my studio, students will learn to read music and have a well rounded music education. This means that we will work on a variety of things such as music theory, music history, and a wide range of repertoire (from Beethoven to the Beatles!) While I have high expectations for my students, I do my best to keep the lessons relaxed and lighthearted. My hope is that the student is always engaged and interested during lessons.

My three expectations:

1. Come prepared both mentally and physically (this is especially important for flutists-- make sure to warm up prior to the lesson!)

2. Don't be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. This is non-threatening territory, I'm here to guide you and help you. Remember that mistakes happen, we're human. Just make sure that you learn from those mistakes so as not to make the same ones and grow from each experience.

3. For parents-- BE INVOLVED! I can't tell you how often I've seen younger students excel when their parents were proactive in the experience. This means encouraging them to practice, coming up with a rewards system, and sometimes sitting in on the lesson to take notes so that you can work on what we did during the lesson at home together. It's difficult for music teachers to compete with iPads, Playstations and television, so let's get creative together!

*** Required Materials ***
Flute students must own a well maintained flute, as an instrument that is out of adjustment causes frustration and can initiate bad habits. In addition, the student must also have a metronome and tuner, a music stand, flute repertoire, and an assignment book for me to write down each week's assignments.

Piano students must have a working acoustic piano or digital piano in their home for piano lessons. The student must also have a metronome, piano repertoire, and an assignment book for each week's assignments.

Sheila is very patient and knowledgeable. My daughter is brand new to the flute and plans to play in her elementary school orchestra. We purchased 5 classes to get her started. Sheila really helped get her set up so she will be more confident when she starts music at school. We hope to take more classed from Sheila in the future.

Miles is a Southern California-based performer and educator. He was recently appointed to the nationally and internationally touring brass quintet, Presidio Brass. He is also 3rd trumpet of the Santa Barbara Symphony, and a frequent performer at the Disneyland Resort including the new Disneyland Band. Miles is also former Principal trumpet of the American Youth Symphony, a premier training ensemble based in Los Angeles. He earned his Master of Music in Trumpet Performance at California State University Fullerton in 2015, studying under Barry Perkins, Principal Trumpet of the Pacific Symphony. He graduated from the University of Redlands in 2011 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance where he studied with Dr. David Scott.

As an educator, Miles is energetic and keeps lessons positive, varied, and always with a goal i

He has performed with the New West Symphony, San Diego Symphony, San Diego Pops, California Philharmonic, Redlands Symphony Orchestra, Riverside Philharmonic, Golden State Pops Orchestra, San Bernardino Symphony, Dream Orchestra, Pacific Brass Ensemble, the Disneyland Band, and many other groups throughout Los Angeles, Orange County, and the Inland Empire. From 2011-2013, he played lead trumpet for Carnival Cruise Lines in numerous showbands performing for their full-scale production shows and live sets. He has performed with Persian pop singer, Shahkar, Chris Botti, and Mannheim Steamroller among others.

Miles received numerous musical and academic awards and had many opportunities while at the University of Redlands. He was a member of the University of Redlands Faculty Brass Quintet from 2008 – 2011. He was awarded the School of Music Director’s Award, Performer’s Award, Theodore Presser Scholarship, Freshman and Sophomore Honor Awards, and was inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda music honor society among many others. In 2011, Miles performed the Arutunian Trumpet Concerto with the Redlands Symphony Orchestra as a result of winning the school's concerto competition. Miles also performed in the school's President's Honor Recital the previous two years. Also in 2011, he was one of the grand prize winners of the Redlands Bowl Young Artists Competition and a featured soloist at the Redlands Bowl, having been a finalist the previous year. He was a winner of the Antelope Valley Symphony Concerto Competition and co-principal of the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra during its 2006 – 2007 season.

I have over 20 years of experience in teaching viola and violin students of all ages and levels. And I have knowledge of Piano and Music Theory as well. I have been a member of MTAC (Music Teachers’ Association of California) since 2005, and I currently serve as string chair as well as first vice president of South Coast Branch - MTAC. I am also a member of SYMF (Southwestern Youth Music Festival), so I enter many talented students pursuing music into the CM (Certificate of Merit) test, violin or viola competitions and auditions every year.

Anna K. performs extensively as soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. Ms K. has served as a director of the Orange County Chamber Ensemble from 2003 to 2012, and has appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras in Korea, Europe, Japan, and more recently in US. She has pe
rformed as a principal violist with Seoul National Symphony Orchestra, Orange County Chamber Ensemble, and Southern California Chamber Orchestra. She has also appeared as guest principal violist with Los Angeles Korean Philharmonic Orchestra and California Central Philharmonic Orchestra. In September of 2002, Anna performed for the Concert called “Synergy” with Los Angeles Philharmonic directed by Esa-Pekka Salonen. In addition to being an active performer, Ms K. has established herself as an educator. Since 1992, she has been teaching students, and has served for 7 years as the string instructor of Amateur Orchestra at Seoul Women’s University in Korea. Besides her teaching career, she has served as chair of “Contemporary Flare Festival” from 2010 to 2012 and the SWV (Strings/Winds/Voice) Competition from 2012 to 2015 in South Coast Branch, MTAC (Music Teachers’ Association of California). Currently, she serves as string chair as well as vice president of South Coast Branch, MTAC (Music Teachers’ Association of California). Anna K. received her Master’s degree in music from University of Southern California (USC) . She has studied with Haeyoung Baik, Seongryong Choi, Chan-Ju Wee, Pamela Goldsmith, and Donald McInnes.

As a brand new adult student, I had concerns that I could find an instructor who could work with my sometimes-busy schedule. Anna enthusiastically agreed to teach me though, and after almost a year of taking lessons with her I've seen great progress! Anna shares her wealth of knowledge in a friendly and encouraging manner, and has happily tailored my curriculum to fit my interests. I'd highly recommend her to any student, without hesitation!

My background in music theory makes me capable of tutoring students in a wide range of music theory subjects. Through my extensive studies, I have learned about music theory and its history dating back to the Renaissance era (c. 1400s). My Music Theory Minor from Northwestern University has given me the opportunity to study music theory in many different contexts beginning with simple Roman numeral chord analysis and delving as deep as composing small four-voice fugues. A student who studies theory with me can expect to become an expert at music analysis, beginning with species counterpoint and continuing from there based on the student's subject interests. I am able to personalize the learning materials of each of my students by using different musical examples that I have studied over the fourteen theory courses I have taken so far. I took the AP Music Theory class in high school and received a 5 on the exam and am also able to help tutor students who wish to pass the test.

I provide private instruction for beginner to advanced trombone, bass trombone, and music theory students. My goal is to create a comfortable atmosphere in which students can feel free to express themselves through the music they play. I keep students mentally engaged by asking them questions that are intended to direct them toward creating a clear, personal interpretation of their music. This gives the student a sense of artistic authority and ownership over their playing and creates more enjoyment in daily practicing and playing. I advocate for students listening to as much music as they can, whether it is a live concert or a recording, which I view as an essential key to swift musical development.

Rachel is a fantastic teacher and tutor. Her expansive knowledge of music theory and ear training contributes to her vast musical ability. Not only is she a great performer, but she is able to break down the music and explain it in a variety of ways in order to effectively teach students at any level. Most importantly, Rachel is an advocate for students expressing their own musical voice. She will not tell a student exactly how to play a given piece, but rather she will teach them the necessary tools for the student to play well, and allow them to explore their own musical interpretation from there.

Outside of music, Rachel is a genuine and kind-hearted person. She is understanding and empathetic, and this carries over into her teaching as well. That being said, Rachel holds herself and her students to high standards. Students will hear improvement in their tone, technique, and musicality as they work with Rachel. I give her my highest recommendation for all subjects.
