As a composer of new music, it is essential to support the local community of musicians through lessons which support individual interests and patiently encourage progress at every level. I teach all ages and can work with any level of skill in terms of instrument ability, music theory, or music engraving. If you sing, play an instrument, or are interested in the manipulation of sound: composition lessons are for you!

In a typical lesson we will begin to develop a new project or analyze a work in progress. Students can expect composition games and exercises with pen and paper for each lesson. If you have Engraving/DAW software like Finale, Sibelius, Ableton, or Logic we will utilize that for games and projects. Helping each student develop their compositional style while increasing their knowledge of music theory, improvisation, and engraving skills are my main goals.

Whether you would like to increase your music theory knowledge, learn how to write music, arrange a

Ive really enjoyed my experiences with Josh. He is well versed in all styles of composition and specializes in more modern avant-garde styles. Our lessons in modern counterpoint have really improved my harmonizations skills and expanded what I thought was capable for chords in a band setting.(i.e. jazz big band, concert band, orchestra, etc.)

"A few months ago after researching a number of vocal instructors in the area and speaking with a few friends, I decided to give Cara a try based on her teaching approach, and resume. Since I had virtually no vocal experience (other than some off-key excursions in the car) I was surprised that I could actually sing the correct notes during my first lesson with her.
Cara's positive, but meticulous approach has helped me improve my vocal ability farther than I ever imagined over the last 6 months. She is fun to work with and I would recommend her to anyone."

"Andrew really creates a very comfortable environment for the singer. I've never seriously sang in front of anyone before, so I had a bunch of apprehension about the whole experience. However, Andrew's confidence in me made me believe in myself. It's an honor being taught by Andrew, an experienced and professional teacher."

"I highly recommend Miss. Olga!

My 10 year old daughter has been playing piano on and off for two and half years, and we started to have lessons with Miss. Olga a month ago. Miss. Olga, who is classically trained, not only keeps a nice balance between theory and performance, but also accommodates my daughter's interests in contemporary music. My daughter just finished learning "Let it go" from Frozen, and has moved on to "Rock around the clock."

Every teacher has a point of view, personal preferences, and methodological bias that may fit one child but may not fit another child as well. Some of the teachers we have previously experienced, demonstrated how a piece of music would sound, then taught how to play it; one teacher taught with finger numbers only, another taught using musical notes. My last teacher taught with finger numbers and notes but unfortunately never ever played any songs for or with my daughter. I have books written with only finger numbers, as a result, my daughter still has hard time reading music. I have other books with names of music notes, but with insufficient fingering instruction which resulted in my daughter developing poor fingering technique. I used to have to go over the songs with my kids after each lesson.

Miss. Olga, on the other hand, demonstrates how the song should sound, then goes over the music line by line helping my daughter to figure out what the notes are, how to finger the notes and then plays the melody along with my daughter 8 octaves higher.

It seems that to Miss. Olga, learning how to play piano is a serious business, a business that the teacher and the student have to run together in order to be successful. Collaborative decision making with a child requires a willingness to listen, negotiate and compromise. As Jessica Turner (music educator) argues music instructors know about teaching music, but when it comes to your child and how s/he learns, we parents are the expert. As an educator myself, I appreciate that Miss. Olga lets me work together with her to ensure the fit and quality of my daughter's musical instruction. I feel fortunate that we have found such a great instructor for my daughter!"

He does an amazing job teaching them on their level, and my children excitedly look forward to their weekly lessons. He is very professional and detailed, taking the time to send videos each week for them to use to practice. We are very thankful for him, and since beginning music lessons, all 3 of my children have progressed quickly in their knowledge and love of their instruments."

How Can I Tell if I'm Breathing Correctly?

It may seem silly to ask whether you're breathing correctly. After all, it's something we do subconsciously each and every day. But when it comes to singing, there actually is a right way to breathe. Here, Chesterfield, MO teacher Lauren V. explains how to check... As vocalists, we are taught to sing using good breath technique.  What does this look like?  If you've ever noticed an athlete breathe, generally you will see the chest and shoulders rise.  When singing, good technique allows th …
