About Jonathan
About

I am a Florida native, active doctoral student, teacher and practitioner. My career includes performing and recording as a guitarist and teaching subjects such as music or math. Grade-school academic strengths in mathematics represent my enthusiasm for the subject. The math equivalent in music can be considered music theory, which is another passion of mine. I hope to take these well-rounded characteristics to teach and influence others with what I have learned in my education and career thus far.

Education & Teaching Experience:

I am currently pursuing my Doctorate of Musical Arts from Shenandoah University and hold a Masters of Music from the University of Akron and a Bachelor of Music from Stetson University (all degrees with a guitar performance emphasis). I also have a temporary teaching certificate for Music K-12 fro
m the Florida Department of Education. I have taught in Florida as a preferred substitute for general music classes, K-12. In college, I have given study sessions for music theory levels ranging from 4-part writing to post-serialism.

Degrees:
Doctorate of Musical Arts: Guitar Performance; Shenandoah University, expected May 2019
Master of Music: Guitar Performance; University of Akron, May 2014
Bachelor of Music: Guitar Performance; Stetson University, 2011

While giving lessons:
I ensure that every student receives fundamental foundation pertaining to the subject. While learning the basics, I advise that the student organizes their lessons and materials in a way that displays progress over time. With the proper knowledge, we can treat the heart of a subject with refinement in order to grasp its purpose and reason---whether its music or math.

Why?
My students have grown with confidence through a sense of accomplishment. Success does not only affect a person's well-being but can also impact other dimensions of their lives.

James is a reliable instructor. He always meets at the scheduled time, and instructs with patience and persistence. Our son has been a student for 8 or 9 years now, and likes Jame's style of teaching. Our son has learned many techniques for playing drums, starting with simple beats. James is well liked and respected. For 11 years James instructed our oldest son on the drums. When the boys started showing an interest in piano, we bought a keyboard for them, and James started teaching them the basics of piano.
Currently James instructs our youngest son on drums and keyboards - rotating each week.
When our son wants to go over something he's been learning at school in his Advanced Keyboarding class, James has been a great help in this area!

Music theory

Arranging music for the harp
Accompaniment skills

And much more!

Anne studied music theory and received her formal music education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). When the Celtic harp piqued her in
terest, she studied harp techniques from world-renowned harpist Sylvia Woods and later contributed to her book: Music Theory & Arranging Techniques for Folk Harps. Anne is an active member of the American String Teacher's Association.

Take lessons online at her studio in South Lake Tahoe, California, or in in Placerville, California.

FAQs:

Do I need to have any musical experience to learn to play the Celtic harp?

It's not necessary to have any prior musical background before embarking on harp lessons. If you have never taken up an instrument before, Anne will teach you harp technique and how to read music, too. It's a plus if you have some past musical experience, because you'll already know the rudiments of reading sheet music. Anne teaches from ages 7 and up. If your child is younger than 7 and anxious to play the harp, get them started on the piano first. This way, when they come to Anne at an older age, they will already know how to read music (harp sheet music and piano sheet music look alike).

Is the harp difficult to learn?

It's no more difficult to learn than any other instrument. If you really want to learn and you practice, you'll learn quickly. It's all about motivation.

Do I need to own a harp to learn to play?

For online lessons, you'll need to have your own harp. You can also buy a harp from Anne. She uses Triplett Harps as rentals and can help you get started on a rent-to-own harp, and is an authorized dealer if you decide you want to purchase a harp in the future. (Note: Anne only rents to students taking lessons from her in her studio. Rentals are not available to students taking online lessons.)

What does Anne teach?

Anne assesses your goals and your experience before designing a learning path that is right for you. For this reason, her lessons are always one-on-one and not taught in a group fashion. Of course, parents are welcome to sit in on their child's lesson.

What is Anne's experience?

Anne studied music theory and received her formal music education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). When the Celtic harp piqued her interest, she studied harp techniques from world-renowned harpist Sylvia Woods and later contributed to her book Music Theory & Arranging Techniques for Folk Harps. Anne also studied professional stage performance with Ed Hooks (San Francisco, CA) and at the Living History Centre (Novato, CA). Anne applied her formal training to teaching music for the Los Angeles Unified School District. She continues to work with students presenting educational demonstrations for school assemblies. Anne has given workshops to students in the Sacramento Waldorf School, El Dorado Union School District, Merced Union High School District, and Minden Elementary School. She has taught harp since 1987, offering educational demonstrations, focused workshops, and taking on private students. She performed on the 2015 GRAMMY® Award Winning Best New Age Album, "Winds of Samsara".

About Pete
My drumming adventure began when I was in elementary school, where I joined the school band. I soon branched out to marching band, learning the rudiments and developing stick control. Of course, I also started playing drum kit, both in school and with friends. Playing rock music for fun eventually lead me to drum circles, where I discovered the wide world of percussion. At this point, I started studying several instruments with world-class teachers, including Babatunde Olatunji on African djembe, Zakir Hussain on the tablas of India, and frame drumming with Layne Redmond. These great musicians not only demonstrated technical and artistic skill, but they also helped me to see that we are all connected by rhythm - we are surrounded by it and filled with it all the time. Day turns to night, the heartbeat moves our blood, the seasons tu
rn - these are just a few of the rhythms that people express musically in unique ways around the planet.

Soon I wanted to share what I had learned with others. This lead to the creation of Pangaea Percussion, an ensemble featuring drums from around the world along with a variety of melodic percussion, flutes, and didgeridoos. I also played with a Middle Eastern Folk / Jazz group called Slow Djinn Fez, and the new age jam band, Mandra. Each of these groups was asked by Reno's Pioneer Center Youth Programs to perform for schools and libraries in the region. Today I continue these school assembly programs with Petroglyph, a duet that includes ethnic instruments along with drum kit and electric guitar.

In the mean time, I started teaching drumming. Using my educational experience as a high school science teacher, I developed both private and group lessons that break musical concepts down into a series of components. Students are invited to pick up the pieces that fit their needs and abilities, and then we add layers to build skills and add variety. These lessons have been presented in a variety of settings, including dance studios, private homes, and music festivals such as the California World Music Festival in Grass Valley.

Whether you want to jam on the drum kit in our great American rock and roll tradition, learn interlocking polyrhythms from Africa, or explore complex cycles like 7-beat or 10-beat rhythms from India, I'd love to help you take your percussive skills to the next level!

Hello everyone. My name is Mitch and I hope to be your music teacher soon! I have been teaching music since 2000, I have a degree in Music Education. Music is undoubtedly my number one passion and teaching it to others is most fulfilling. I have been in various bands and musical productions and I am currently holding the position of Assistant Director of Contemporary Music at the Church in which my family attends. I don't use your lesson time as my "show off time". I expect students to practice daily and attend lessons prepared and ready to build on the previous lesson. Mitch really helped me get my legs back under me, helped me learn how to break down a song to learn the bass parts, and even got me an audition with a local band. He’s easy going but a really outstanding musician who helped me up my game tremendously. Great teacher!

About Michael
I am a professional freelance violinist and teacher living in San Francisco. I began studying violin at the age of 5 and have had the privilege of studying with renowned teachers who taught at Moscow Conservatory, Stanford, and Curtis Institute of Music. I have performed violin and viola in North and South America (including Carnegie Hall and the National Theater of Costa Rica) and in Europe.

My violin and viola students can expect me to tailor the way I teach to their unique goals and learning styles. Everyone's hands and arms are different, and string technique is not "one size fits all." I believe that all students can achieve success and play musically if they have the right tools. My job is to provide students with those tools. I specialize in teaching a relaxed technique that allows players to get a warm, beautiful tone from their
instrument so that they are free to play musically and expressively with confidence!

I teach violin and viola students of all different ages and experience levels. I've studied classical violin for 24 years. I can teach students to read music and pursue excellence in a traditional classical way, or I can teach students how to play their favorite pop tunes, depending on students' personal goals.

I currently serve as concertmaster of the Mozart to Mendelssohn Orchestra in San Francisco, lead chamber music nights with the SF Civic Music Association, and play gigs around the Bay Area. I love being a part of community music-making and believe that the benefits of music education reach far beyond the instrument itself to social and cognitive skills, confidence, and creativity.

My personal passion is classical music but the kind of technique I teach applies to all styles, and I am experienced teaching fiddling, pop music, or whatever music inspires you. I look forward to meeting you and helping you to become a better musician!
