My lessons are very student driven and revolve around developing students innate music abilities to help them connect and experience success as well as enriching their lives with music. In my lessons students will develop music appreciation skills by listening to music, understanding basic music theory concepts, growing a knowledge of historical awareness in music all alongside learning the instrument of their chosen preference. The pace set for the sessions is rather relaxed and is highly dependent on the student but, students are guided throughout the sessions to eventually achieve their goals. My main teaching approach is: Let me use my skills and knowledge to help figure out what works best for you!

My mission is to provide a positive musical experience for all students. For some this includes rigorous preparation for an audition of some kind, for others it may be an introduction to music fundamentals to foster better listening skills and greater artistic appreciation. All students will be challenged to improve their listening, timing, and technique. All students will learn to play songs that they love.
Recommendations for best results: make a three-month commitment to weekly lessons, and work up to 30 minutes of daily practice. This formula guarantees results. Bring your instrument, music books, and a binder with sheet protectors ☺
*Scheduling policy: to avoid being charged for a lesson - One week notice is required to cancel, skip, or "roll over" a lesson. 24 hours notice to reschedule (based on availability).
To continue weekly lessons, students must maintain at least 90% attendance or the time slot may be forfeited.
Good Luck!
Jordan was born and raised in the El Centro, California where he began playing the alto sax in the elementary band program. At the age of 12, he began his study of guitar and drums, performing in several rock and ska bands around his home town and San Diego. At age 14, is where he found his love for brass instruments when he took up the trombone. While in high school he became a featured soloist with the Imperial Valley College Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of the legendary trumpeter Jimmy Cannon. It was this that lead Jordan to accept the Constance Weldon Music Scholarship to attend the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL.
While performing in South Florida Jordan appeared with major acts including 10,000 Maniacs, and appeared on the Spanish television show "Calle Ocho." He also gained invaluable experience teaching in Miami public schools. His first teaching assignment was at Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School where he directed 3 beginning bands, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and their highly decorated Jazz Band. Later Jordan moved into the elementary setting, teaching vocal and instrumental music for grades K-5 at Cypress Elementary.
In 2007, Jordan returned to California to pursue a music career in San Diego. He can be seen performing all over San Diego, Orange, and LA Counties in styles ranging from rock, jazz, funk, blues, hip-hop, Latin, and more. He performs primarily on trombone, piano, and guitar, but is known to pick up percussion, harmonica, and other wind instruments as well. Jordan, along with the rest of the aggressively funky cover band SuperMagnetic, were the grand prize winner of the 2010 Viejas Ultimate Music Challenge 4. In 2011, Tori Roze & The Hot Mess were nominated for a San Diego Music Award in the category of "Best Blues Artist" after the release of their first album "From The Hip." They released their second album "Turbulence" last December, and are heard regularly on local San Diego radio. This album has also been nominated for Best Pop album for the 2013 San Diego Music Awards. In 2013, Jordan completed his Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University.
On stage, Jordan is a talented and versatile performer. He is known for his trombone sound and improvisational ability, as well as his positive relationship with his fellow musicians. In lessons, Jordan is energetic and creative.

Everybody's path is different, but we must start with a strong foundation in the fundamentals. After we start to establish some technique on your instrument we will explore music that suits you from a practical stand point in your development, and very importantly, stylistically. Together we will plan a curriculum that keeps you motivated toward your goals and that fits your life style.

About Matthew
I started playing the trumpet in the 4th grade, which has led me all the way to receiving my degrees in Trumpet Performance and Music Education! I was lucky enough to attend one of the nation's top music schools, The Peabody Institute, and I now work toward my Master's degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have enjoyed performing in everything from big-band-lead to principal trumpet in the orchestra, leading brass quintets and brass ensembles, and much more! The trumpet has been a huge passion for as long as I can remember now!
While I was learning songs as a child, I decided I wanted to join a band! Now here we are 10 years later and
I've also been playing the guitar for just under 10 years. Playing the guitar has been both a complete joy, but also a fantastic learning experience. I have been learning songs of my favorite artists and even written my own material, and having the opportunity to immerse myself in my favorite music and create music of my own has taught me so much more about music and being a musician. I hope to impart this experience onto all of my students.
Whether it's trumpet, voice, or guitar, I love all things music and my #1 objective is to for my students to learn how it feels to experience what music REALLY has to offer, so to you reading this, let's make some noise!
*** Lesson Details ***
For starters, understand that you're going to have a blast! Within months of working together, I'll have you playing your favorite songs, or feeling prepared for that upcoming audition. I remember what it was like to have second thoughts about auditioning and performance, and I'll make sure those thoughts are a thing of the past for you!
During our lessons, I enjoy addressing the material you have to work on, whether in school or just for your own enjoyment. At the same time, I will present music and materials of my own, and I encourage you to do the same!
I have always enjoyed learning from my students as they have learned from myself, and I could only hope to express how rewarding it is when I see a student of mine progress from week to week and achieve their own goals.
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced player, you can be guaranteed we'll make steady progress and we will achieve your goals. Get ready to wow your friends and family!
*** Studio Equipment ***
Metronome
Post-it Notes
Music Stand(s)
Chairs
Computer/Internet
Keyboard
Guitar(s)
*** Travel Equipment ***
I would provide utilities including music stand, metronome, some external source of pitch.
I expect the student to bring any and all assigned music/material they wish to work on. The student will also begin the lesson prepared with basic necessities, including a pencil (please, no pens) and all music assigned from prior lesson (if this is a first-lesson, bring any/all music you currently have and/or are working on). Vocal students will bring a bottle of water. Trumpet students will have their own valve oil and mouthpiece (if not originally included with your horn).
*** Specialties ***
Trumpet methods include (not limited to) Arban's, Clarke, Sachs, Rubank, Getchell, Adam, Schlossberg, Colin, Bai Lin.
For instruments outside the trumpet, methods will address school curriculum, unless student has advanced beyond provided materials.
I strongly encourage students of voice, guitar, and piano to pick material of their choosing.
Classical and rock are the genres to which I am most attracted

I've been taking lessons with Matt for about 2 months now. Right away it was a very comfortable environment and vibe, which is important, especially as a beginning, aspiring singer. Takes the lessons slow and easy going at first, then jumps into exercises and focuses on directly what style the student is interested in. Very awesome dude, would definitely recommend! Thanks Matt!

I have performed in many incredible venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Chicago Symphony Center, Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts, Kresge Auditorium, and Finney Chapel. In addition to my work as a graduate student at University of Southern California, I continue to find projects as an independent artist. I studied with some of the finest trombonists in the world while getting my undergrad degree in Jazz Studies from The Juilliard School in New York City. I have played the horn for over 13 years, and for 6 years professionally in New York working with people such as Wynton Marsalis, Ron Carter, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra, in addition to regular performances at high level jazz clubs such as Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. Also as a composer I can offer lessons on composition, music theory, improvisation, ear training, and piano as well.
In addition to performance success, I have been teaching private students for 5 years, with several students still coming back when they are in town after several years.
Beginning students can expect to work on fundamentals of getting a good sound on the instrument and learning scales, arpeggios, and simple melodies.
Intermediate students can expect to be learning repertoire (the style dependent on what the student wants) and ...
About Will
My students can expect a very knowledgable and straightforward teacher, but not a harsh one. I believe that everybody finds their inspiration at their own time and my job as a teacher is to do my best to correct technical issues as they arise, but to also provide materials that will inspire and want to push you forward.
Because I have studied and performed at a high level, I am prepared to take on whatever problems Advanced and intermediate students have to offer.
My background as a Youth Minister in the Methodist Church granted me patience that also opens up the possibility to teaching beginning students. Truth be told, I had to re-learn many things when I arrived to New York in order to correct bad habits that I learned in high school. So I have gone through the process of building from the ground up and have a defined system to provide a foundation to build upon for a great musical future.
Having worked with many fantastic musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Elliot Mason, and Ron Carter, I have been immersed in a depth of American music that most people have not.
I look forward to providing you with guidance and inspiration!
