I can especially help students who are already studying French, but need additional assistance in mastering the grammar, pronunciation, and usage of the language, with an emphasis on written French.

About Julie
I am a professional musician, specializing in traditional American and Irish music and song; I can, however, also teach classical guitar and beginning-intermediate violin. My CD, "American Stranger," has received critical acclaim and I have authored two books on DADGAD guitar for Mel Bay Publications.

I taught myself guitar at the age of thirteen, but took three years of lessons at Washington University, where I also studied English and French. As an adult I became interested in fingerstyle guitar in open tunings, especially DADGAD. I am, however, happy to teach in standard tuning--including basic guitar proficiency, classical guitar, and "folk" guitar.

I have played violin since I was eleven, taking lessons until the age of sixteen and playing in both high school orchestra and the local youth symphony. I later learned to sus
pend much of my classical technique in order to play both old-time and traditional Irish fiddle as authentically as possible; but I still retain my initial training and apply good basic violin technique to my fiddle and (of course) her violin teaching, while tailoring it to the musical idioms of each of students.

I have also studied voice, which again, however, I have never allowed to interfere with my performance of traditional songs--largely because I had developed a traditional approach to the singing of both American southern mountain repertory and traditional Irish song many years before receiving any formal instruction. This training, however, has given me greater insight into how to get the most out of your voice for almost any style.

I also taught myself to play lap dulcimer, basing my approach on the Eastern Kentucky styles associated with Jean Ritchie, Barbara Edwards, and Anne MacFie—that is, primarily using a small dowel stick or noter to sound the melody, and playing counter-melodies for song accompaniments.

My clawhammer banjo-playing is influenced by various Appalachian instrumentalists and accompanists (including Dock Boggs, Clarence Ashley, Hobart Smith, and Lily May Ledford), but my style is also influenced by years of playing with midwestern and southern-style fiddlers.

I welcome students ages 10 or above, and have learned to adapt my teaching style to the individual student, helping each one to make the most of his or her talents and enthusiasms, while emphasizing sound technique and good practice habits.

I also teach academic subjects, especially English (in which I hold a Ph.D.) and French (in which I hold a B.A.). In English, I emphasize good grammar and solid composition skills and try to get my students as excited as I am about everything from sentence structure to Shakespeare.

Many people are talented as performers but not gifted as instructors - Julie is most definitely both. She uses her keen ear to let you know your strengths, and finds productive ways to help you improve weak points. She lives and breathes traditional music and it is always a true delight to learn from her.

I have been taking lessons in classical style guitar from Julie for about two years. She has patiently brought me through increasingly more difficult technique by choosing a wide variety of challenging but enjoyable pieces to practice. I am gradually working my way up the fret towards the 5th position. She has helped me with theory, including rhythm, the major and minor scales and chord building. Her empathy is a particular blessing for me because of my poor eyesight and the arthritis in my wrists, hands and fingers.”

When it comes to learning French, I believe that speaking experience is just as important as learning grammar and vocabulary. I emphasize speaking skills and give students the opportunity to practice this throughout my lessons. For students who need help with grammar (one of the trickiest things to learn in French!), I use my experience both as a student and teacher to simplify difficult concepts.

Our family has found Jacqueline to be an awesome tutor for our high school daughter. Not only is she kind, thorough and patient, but Jacqueline always makes it a point to find out what the local high school teachers are teaching and what methods they're using. She has a very friendly and approachable manner and loves what she teaches.

About Annaëlle
Hi there!

I am a Native French person! 🇫🇷
I love to learn languages (I can speak English, some Spanish, and a few words in Japanese, Chinese and German). I know all of that because I also love meeting new people and new cultures.

It is extremely personally rewarding when it comes to share with another part of the world!

Each time I met people willing to learn some French, I taught them a few things with pleasure, but especially things we say in daily life; because they will use it after to impress another French person!

I also worked a lot with kids in summer camps, and loved to talk with them to better understand who they are, what they like...

I think that when you have learned something, the next step is to teach somebody else. Sharing is important!

Hope to teach you soon!

French is one of the most difficult languages to learn. Thank God it's my first language! With me, you won't only learn the textbook stuff (grammar and vocabulary), but you will also learn how things are actually said IN REAL LIFE. In case you didn't know, the dialogs they have in those textbooks seem like they come from the 17th century.
Back to why I would be a good French tutor. Well, learning a new language is fun! What better way to do so with a native speaker? You need a friend to practice the language with. I will be that friend!

About Morel
Hey you! Comment tu vas?
Whether you are learning French as a prerequisite, or just for fun, having someone to speak with is the way to go! I'll create an environment where you can have fun learning the language, including the grammar and vocabulary. I know a lot of people say that French is hard, but it doesn't have to be. Book a lesson with me and I will prove them wrong! So excited to meet you!
