We have had the pleasure of knowing Elizabeth for the past few years during which she has taught singing to our daughter, Katia, at home. Not only is Elizabeth knowledgeable, she is patient, thoughtful and considerate of her students. She puts nervous singers at ease while encouraging them to explore their full potential. We are most fortunate to have Elizabeth as Katia's singing instructor as our daughter really looks forward to her weekly lessons.

Broadway style techniques in a fun and healthy manner!

About Christine
From Opera to Musical Theatre, and Rock to Pop, I've been performing professionally for 7 years and teaching consecutively for 4 years! My teaching style is patient yet fun while always "getting the job done" for each individual's circumstances and goals. I have taught a variety of styles, ages (6 to 80!), and people from varying backgrounds (beginners to advanced). The voice is an amazingly flexible and versatile instrument, and I love seeing each student's "light bulb" moments, while always maintaining a level of humor and seriousness in each lesson. My training and degrees from both San Jose State University and The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (LA and NY) not only gave me the tools to be an all-around performer, but also a well-trained educator, too. I try to keep my lessons affordable and ALWAYS fun and educational. Try out
a lesson and see if we're a fit!

*** Lesson Details ***
I love to focus on technique, language/diction, phrasing and interpretation, creating and enhancing a high-level of musicianship at all times (starting from beginner to advanced). We will first begin with a comfortable stretch and vocal warm up (yes, you may be doing some silly things!) and transition into repertoire (I will suggest pieces based on the style(s) desired, or the student can bring in their own selections). Students that are preparing for auditions (or would like to someday) will be able to discuss rep and run rep (an accompanist is available an additional fee). As the student grows, the warm-ups will intensify in difficulty and repertoire will become increasingly more demanding (never exceeding the student's abilities, but always with a gentle push/challenge).

*** Studio Equipment ***
Upright piano.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student's home (if a "Go-To") must have a piano/keyboard and CD/media player if they plan to sing along to a track. If a student comes to me, a piano is provided.

*** Specialties ***
Opera (Classical), Musical Theatre (Broadway), etc.

What a difference!!

Christine is wonderful! Our little 10 year old girl started lessons because she had stopped singing at home and was terrified of singing in front of people. After performing in various plays, participating in summer actor/singer events and classes, and singing everywhere she went, this was a shock to us. After two lessons with Christine, she is singing at home again! She loves her time with Christine and the impact already shows.

I approach my teaching by finding every singer's true and honest voice, and then exploring ways to make that voice as free and beautiful as possible. In the course of our lessons I will utilize techniques to explore breath control, resonance, range and freedom of not only the voice, but the body's ability to express while performing.

Every person that is capable of speech is capable of singing beautifully, and I fully embrace that mantra as a teacher. With that approach, I teach a wide variety of styles, ranging from Music Theater to classically informed Operatic Singing. Let's make some music!

About Patrick
I am an opera singer here in the Bay Area, with Professional Stage experience in Opera, Music Theater, Choral Work and Spoken Word. Most recently I've performed on stage at San Francisco Opera, West Bay Opera, Lamplighter's Music Theater and Pocket Opera! I also regularly work with Education Outreach Organizations such as the San Francisco Opera Guild, to bring opera to Elementary schools around the Bay Area.

I love working with students of all ages and have been teaching since my undergraduate in 2010. Speaking of school, I hold a Bachelor of Music from The Pennsylvania State University in Voice with an emphasis on Vocal Pedagogy. I also hold a Master of Music from The San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where I continued my work in Pedagogy and Vocal Anatomy / Physiology.

A teacher of singing cannot actually see the student's instrument. With this in mind, we find a common language to describe the physical and acoustic sensations to determine the most healthy and long-lasting technique possible.
I have been teaching for over 7 years from beginner through advanced (graduate degree) students. I emphasize vocal freedom, resonance, alignment and posture, breath management and support, and style/expression. I try to help each student find more joy and ease in his/her artistic journey.

About Brayton
I am a classically trained singer with a graduate degree in vocal performance. I have performed in opera, musical theater, recital, cabaret, and as an orchestral soloist with regional companies around the US. In addition to teaching, I also work professionally in classical musician management, working with top tier opera singers, conductors, and directors.

I have over 7 years of teaching experience, from beginner through advanced (graduate degree) students, a number of which have gone on to higher education, teaching, and professional performing careers. Whether you are looking to audition for collegiate music program or just wanting to learn how to sing more freely and expressively for yourself and friends, I am confident I can help you develop a sustainable technique to help you progress as an artist.

With a Master Of Music degree in Voice Performance from Boston University, I am passionate about helping each student discover his/her own unique voice. A student of the esteemed operatic soprano, Phyllis Curtin, I teach a pedagogy founded on the principles of the classical bel canto technique. With strong emphasis on maintenance of a coordinated singing posture and fully supported diaphragmatic breathing, my teaching allow most students to see improvements in ease and beauty of tone within two lessons.

I do believe that time spent outside of one's lessons applying the technique in private practice is THE MOST important building block to mastery of one's voice. I encourage all students to record their lessons for use in their private practice. Objectively listening to oneself and developing a discriminating ear for your sound is essential to successful development.

In addition to teaching, I am a busy performer in the San Francisco Bay Area, providing the singing voice for ...

About ERIK
Let's make some joyful noise together! Singing beautifully is one of the most freeing and gratifying experiences one can have. I grew up singing in church, my local high school music program and community choral organizations. So singing is a fundamental part of my personal history and experience. My education in music resulted in my earning the Master of Music degree in Voice Performance from Boston University College of Fine Arts, where I was a private student of the esteemed operatic soprano, Phyllis Curtin. As a teacher, I continue Phyllis' legacy of instruction with her "Five Basic Exercises for Singing" - a tried and true, disciplined approach to discovering one's own unique singing voice.

My pedagogy embraces the fundamental tenets of classical bel canto technique. With strong emphasis on maintaining a well-coordinated singing pos
ture and fully-supported diaphragmatic breathing, my students see initial results immediately in terms of ease of production and beauty of sound. The significance of word /text conception as a frontally-placed sensation is the ultimate goal of singing in my studio. We sing "outside ourselves", with our imagination governing all of the physical demands we ask of the voice.

As a classically trained pianist as well, I am able to teach students in any genre of music. From beginner to advanced, the language of music is all the same. An understanding of rhythm, intonation and legato as it related to what is on the printed page is of utmost priority in my instruction. As singers we are "re-creative" artists, charged with realizing the composer's creation. And so integrity to the score and to the composer's intentions are lessons consistently taught in my studio.

The thing I love most about teaching voice is seeing the "break-through" moments happen for a student. Our voices are intangible instruments, and so we must discover them through imagery and sensation. Once a particular combination of ideas really makes practical sense to a student, the voice then begins to become their own.

As a busy performer myself, I provide the singing voice for celebrated San Francisco drag chanteuse, Vanessa Bousay. The opportunity to sing and live in this theatrical character is for me the ultimate expression of freedom in singing. My teaching definitely embraces this important aspect of being "in character" in any music one sings.

Erik is exactly what I've been looking for in a voice teacher. I came to him with fifteen years of training and practice in theatrical stage performance, but not knowing how to get over my blocks, and harness my vocal power as a singer. Through deceptively simple exercises he's taught me how to use my voice in ways I never have before.

His understanding of music is expert, and as we work through musical notation I learn more about the art. The songs he chooses for me to work on are often the perfect challenge, classical arias, which I never thought I could do before we started training together. He has a sharp eye and ear for detail, keeping me from slipping into old habits, and he is as gentle as a lamb as he teaches me to be the Diva I've always wanted to be.

Fantastic teacher, and lovely human!

And it's not just taking a class with him - it's the practice and music he gives you to take home. I am inspired to practice what he teaches because I see and hear the results. If you are serious about having fun while learning - his training and experience is GOLD. I am so grateful to have found him. Five stars and then some!
