About Sven
Hi, I'm Sven and I love helping people learn to sing!

I'm a singer and choral conductor with 20 years experience as a full-time performing musician. I have taught class voice and individual singing lessons at the New England Conservatory of Music and have been a Teaching Artist with San Francisco Opera for nine years. As artistic director of Lacuna Arts (SF), I conduct the 24 voice a cappella Chorale and present workshops in ear training, sight singing, and music theory for choral singers. My students have gone on to major in voice performance at the college level and to perform as soloists with local choruses.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach classical singing technique based on a scientific knowledge of vocal anatomy and the physics of sound—and not on flashy gimmicks.

Through guided practice, you will learn to:

-take a long
, slow breath that expands the ribcage before starting to sing
-initiate the vocal tone with an onset that is neither breathy nor pressed
-manage breath efficiently so you never feel like you "run out" of air in the middle of a phrase
-connect from pitch to pitch and vowel to vowel for a seamless legato
-sing any dynamic from piano to forte
-increase your vocal range from top to bottom with balanced resonance and smooth register transitions

If you study with me, you will learn why common expressions like "breathe from the diaphragm" are essentially meaningless (we can only breathe from the diaphragm). And you will come to understand why things like trying to "bring the sound forward" or "send the voice to the back of the room" are physically impossible (sound doesn't move like that).

Whether you are interested in singing opera, choral music, or musical theater, you will learn a foundational classical singing technique that will allow you to make the artistic choices you want with confidence, poise, and finesse. Students must be serious about improving their singing and commit to a minimum of 60 minutes of at-home practice between lessons.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the living room, upright Kawai piano, sitting area, mirror, music stand, Edirol/Roland digital recorder

*** Travel Equipment ***
Must have piano

*** Specialties ***
classical, opera, and "legit" musical theater

Sven is an amazing teacher. He has tremendous knowledge and insight into how the voice works, so he is able to identify problems and provide solutions. He is good at improvising exercises to fit specific issues. I was frequently impressed at how he could hear what I was doing wrong and tell me exactly how to correct it. But he is not all technical either. Sven focuses on interpretation and the meaning of the text. I studied singing off and on for about 30 years before Sven, and I learned more from him than all of my other teachers combined. I kept thinking, "Why didn't anyone tell me any of these things before???" I only stopped after 5 years because of competing priorities for my time and income. I cannot recommend Sven highly enough.

About Rhonda
I have always had a love for music. From all the music trivia games my family won't play with me, to my large collection of records, cassettes, and CDs - I am hooked!

I made my solo performance debut at age 7 by singing "It's A Small World" acapella in a school talent show. At age 9 I started taking clarinet lessons where I learned musicianship and how to read music. Throughout my school years I also sang in choir, played tenor saxophone in the school jazz band, and hoofed it in marching band.

During my first year in college I took a beginning guitar class for fun and I never looked back! I studied classical guitar for 3 years and piano for 2 years. I ultimately received a Minor in Music from California State University, Hayward in 1990.

I have been playing guitar for 27 years. I have played professionally in the San Franc
isco Bay Area in various rock, country, and blues bands as well as playing solo acoustic performances at local coffee houses.

I have been teaching private guitar lessons for 20 years and piano for 10.I like to keep learning fun! I am a very patient, compassionate teacher who will come up with creative ways to explain/demonstrate something new.

*** Lesson Details ***
Music is the most fun activity that people of all ages can enjoy. And learning how to play music should be fun too! When students inquire about taking lessons from me I always ask, "What do you want to learn?" I try to keep students interested by showing them things they want to learn. I also believe in teaching the basics. Whether you want to take piano or guitar lessons I believe you should learn basic musicianship which includes learning to read simple notes and where those notes are on your instrument, rhythm concepts, and tempo. It's easier than you think! The more you know the more you can teach yourself later on, and the more you can collaborate with other musicians.

After 3 or 6 months of taking lessons with me, students will be able to read basic music notation. They will be able to play songs either by their choosing or mine, they will have self-confidence to play songs in front of an audience/friends, and they will have the knowledge to figure out how to play songs on their own.

*** Specialties ***
I studied classical guitar at Cal State Hayward and have taught different finger picking styles as well as genres such as pop and country.

I've studied with some of the finest trombonists in the US and completed my Bachelors degree in Trombone Performance at the University of Arizona. My performing background is a balanced mix of classical and commercial ensembles. I've played in symphony orchestras, pit orchestras, show bands, jazz bands, chamber music, and dixieland to name just a few. It all starts with learning the basics and that's how I approach trombone, bass trombone, euphonium, and tuba with my students. I have several years experience with my private studio, in-house lessons, as well as teaching brass at a performing arts high school. Students learn relaxed technique, production of a beautiful tone, and overall musicality.

*** Lesson Details ***
I place an emphasis on building embouchure, breathing, posture, musical interpretation, sight-reading and theory.

I encourage relaxed technique while enjoying the process of making music.

All of the above can be applied to any style of music the student is interested in exploring.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio is located in a relaxed setting near a creek. For the teaching of brass instruments, not much equipment is needed though I have a metronome, tuner, digital recorder, sounds system, and plenty of music to get started.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I travel with necessary instruments, metronome, digital recorder, and whatever music I'd be introducing at that particular lesson.

*** Specialties ***
Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone/Euphonium, Bass Trombone, and Tuba

My first instruction from David O. couldn't have gone better. He quickly summed up my abilities (or lack thereof) and put me on a course for improvement. Dave's style of teaching was fun and unintimidating. In addition, Dave is extremely patient and sincere. I'm looking forward to the next lessons.

Ahmad is very passionate about teaching guitar. I've been playing guitar for last 2 year and with Ahmad, I've learnt much more in couple of months than I learnt in 2 years putting me on the Fast track. He has a very structured teaching approach, He breaks down complex techniques in small modules, which enabled me to learn quickly and everything is reviewed in the following class. Ahmad tailored the guitar lessons according to my skills and interests.
He is a great teacher and I highly recommend him for guitar lesson.

it makes a huge difference if you could have a great instructor like Ahmad. You can practice on your own for months without any progress and one day you decide to work with Ahmad, all of a sudden, you are on another level.

The guitar is an amazingly verastile instrument, with it’s capacity to produce melody, harmony and percussion, all at the same time!

As my student, you’ll be taught to maximize the power of this ever ancient, ever new instrument by learning:
Rhythm (strumming and finger picking)
Melody (playing the “tune” of your favorite songs):
Harmony (the chords and multi-note patterns that build off the melodic leads)

A good player is more than a mechanic who knows positions and technique:
A good player knows MUSIC, the theory and patterns that shape the actions of their hands.
Learning an instrument is not just about theory and discipine, its about the joy of expanding and sharing one’s world with other people.

This 30-year veteran teacher, performer and recording artist can get you started as a beginner, or bring you to the next lev
el as an intermediate or advanced player.

Fun and highly-individualized lessons...
Patient teacher who wants you to love music
Specializing in acoustic-style playing

About Homayoon
Hello All,
My name is Homayoon and I am really passionate about music.
My journey of becoming a musician started with grabbing my first acoustic guitar in High School. When I went to college, I tried to pursue a career in Computer Science and Programming, but after a year, I decided to take my passion to the next level and study music, and learn about writing songs and be a musician that I always dreamed of. So far, it's been almost 10 years that I have been playing guitar (Blues, Rock, Jazz etc.) while studying music theory and composition in college. My goal is to become a RockStar \m/ (There, I said it!) but more realistically, I want to be a Performer as well as Song Writer and possibly pursue a path in Music Production.
Most importantly, I am here to help and encourage people to learn and play guitar and maybe help out with the und
erstanding the basics of song writing and theory.
I have written short summary about what and how I will teach guitar and music theory in each section and I'm looking forward in seeing you!
~Cheers
