I began classical piano instruction in 1960 and took private lessons for ten years before branching out into all the other styles of music. I have taught, recorded and performed professionally since 1978, and will show you proper hand and finger technique, music theory, how to read notation and chord charts/symbols, and equally as important teach you how to play by ear. I teach all ages, all styles and all levels of piano, and will teach you how to have fun with it all along the way!

About Steven
Have you always wanted to learn how to play the piano, guitar or electric bass? Or maybe you've just felt like brushing up your musical knowledge and playing skills? Now’s your chance to fulfill those dreams!

About Me: San Francisco Bay area pianist/guitarist/bassist; I've been playing music for over 50 years. I'm classically trained with a solid foundation and knowledge of music theory, and have over 40 years experience teaching, recording and performing. I have done session work and/or performed with members of Journey, Santana, Jackson Browne, Eddie Money, The Doobie Brothers and Greg Allman to name a few, and am currently teaching piano, theory and bass to Mike Dirnt, the bassist for Green Day. Let me take my education and experience and pass them on to you!

My main goal as a music instructor is to pass along my love and kno
wledge of playing music to my students, always vigilant for sharing shortcuts that will help the student to achieve their lesson goals faster. Some teachers teach only out of books. I am not such a teacher. Books solve the problem of learning music in generalizations and by their very nature, cannot take into consideration personal issues a student will encounter.

Most students are able to learn enough of the necessary mechanics at the first lesson to actually play something before they leave that lesson. This is important because they realize that playing music IS possible. I always enjoy the look on their face when they realize they have actually “played” their instrument at their first lesson.

I am not the sort of teacher who yells and screams if the student comes in unprepared. I realize that people come to me for a variety of reasons and I work with them with whatever they bring in. I am patient and if a student is not understanding a certain aspect, I bring into play alternate approaches. Not everyone assimilates information in the same way. Learning music should be an enjoyable adventure for the student and I venture to say that my students enjoy coming to their lessons. We have fun, and we learn.

My current rates are $40 per half hour, $60 per 45 minutes and $80 per hour, and believe me... you will get your money's worth! Also I should note that due to my current students, plus teaching at a private school in Sausalito and recording sessions, my time constraints only allow me to teach lessons out of my home studio in Alameda. Hopefully this will work for you as well!

I've been taking lessons from Steven for I think two years now and he's helped me so much not only in reading music but also in ear training and in my song writing. He's incredibly patient and fun to work with. He also has a really nice cat.

I have taught piano off and on since I was 17 years old and for 3 years recently. I enjoy children ages 5 and up, beginners and intermediates, and beginning adults. I choose the curriculum according to the student's age, ability, learning style and choice. My primary goal is for the students to have a positive experience with piano and to look forward to coming each week so that they will want to continue piano or another instrument in the future. I have a lot of incentives and success in this area. I charge low fees as some clients are unsure of their ability to learn at first. I am very patient and non-judgmental, and I love what I do.

I live on the west side of the valley and usually teach in my home although I am available for outcalls depending on the distance, day and time.

I also have simple piano keyboards for rent or sale at a low price.

Thank you for your interest.

Judy

About Judy
I have taught may different kinds of subjects, ESL, Drug and Alcohol Education, Social services, in the past. Mostly, though, I have taught piano, my first and greatest love, starting in the 70's and off and on until I took it full time during the past 2 years. I develop special relationships with all of my students, and together with individually specific incentives, nearly all my students progress very quickly in their learning. I enjoy children of all ages as well as adults.

Beginning Piano students will be taught the basics in a fun but productive way. I will teach a strong foundation so a student can move forward with confidence. Lessons would be individualized to focus on areas that need the most guidance.

Students will learn the basics about rhythm, harmony, and melody and how they apply to piano. They will become fluent in the 12 basic keys to a degree where you can play simple songs in any of them.

About Melissa
I have been teaching since 2006 on a variety of topics. I graduated with an BA from the University of Wisconsin. My degree is in History with and emphasis on East Asian history.

I've taught all age groups from age 2 up to retirees. My teaching experience includes one-on-one and group classes in a variety of settings. I've taught corporate classes, private lessons, small groups, and traditional classroom lessons.

We have a student-centric philosophy of learning. Lessons are generally relaxed and designed to work towards accomplishing student determined goals. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. Special focus on topics like music theory, self-accompaniment, composition, song writing, and home recording are available as well.

What are your personal goals? We'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

Lessons with small children are more focused on just having fun while developing a good musical foundation, but we prefer for them to have as much personal ownership of their lesson as possible.

Melissa was the perfect teacher for my child. She's warm, engaged, patient -- and very skilled. I think my daughter continued with her piano instruction only because she enjoyed her classes so much! If we hadn't moved an hour away, we would still be going to Melissa. She's awesome! I highly recommend her.

I grew up with a piano always near me. There was a piano in my family's home, and because I was always involved with music in school, I was naturally always in the vicinity of a piano there as well. This lead me to teach myself a lot about the instrument, which was good because I ended up playing it a lot when I lived in Brazil. Then, as part of my bachelor's degree at Brigham Young University, I took a full year of secondary piano lessons, qualifying me to teach beginning piano. ***Important FYI*** Students MUST have access to their own piano/electronic keyboard. I teach with the Faber & Faber method books.

About Drew
As a recent recipient of a Master's Degree in Flute Performance from Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music, Drew Powell is a promising young flutist and highly sought after flute teacher. For 15 years, he has participated in numerous music competitions, festivals, and performance opportunities, both as a soloist and part of ensembles, and actively continues to do so. He is an advocate of the arts and passionate about spreading the gift of music, which has lead him to teach over 30 students (and counting!) in just the past 3 years.

Drew won the 2017 Myrna Brown Artist Competition (an international competition with no age limit) hosted by the Texas Flute Society. He was recently invited to be a guest artist at the 2018 Texas Flute Society Annual Convention, where he taught several masterclasses and gave solo performances.

*
**My Vision***
I seek students who share a love of learning. I am not looking for the finest musicians or highest IQ's, because those gifts are not required to learn and grow. My greatest experiences as a teacher have come from when I work with students who just want to learn more.

***My Requirements***
I hold my students to high expectations when it comes to practicing. Each week, I give students individual assignments that I know will improve their learning and playing abilities, and I expect those assignments to be fulfilled by the next lesson. A failure to do so will result in frustration for both myself and my student.

However, I know that nobody is perfect, and I myself have had my share of weeks where life happens, and I simply don't progress as much as I would like. As a teacher, I understand this perfectly, and I will always strive to listen to my students, and work with them through their difficulties or struggles.

***What To Expect From Lessons***
I bring a lot of energy to lessons! I am very passionate about teaching and helping students grow, and I make sure to bring that to every lesson. I give concise, direct feedback to students, making sure to give them the information they need to understand how they can achieve their goals and grow.

I am very perceptive of students' feelings, and I take care to be sensitive to their needs each week. My worst fear as a teacher is to cause hurt feelings, so I will do everything in my power to avoid that!

I am an expert in the field of music and the flute, so you can be rest assured that the quality of instruction will be the highest.

In the few months that I've had flute lessons with Drew, I've grown so much. As a beginner in flute, I was completely scared and overwhelmed with taking band for the first time. Knowing I needed lessons, I'm so glad that I was paired with Drew. On my first lesson, Drew asked me what my goals were and I told him that it was to just simply read the notes on the page. That's all I expected to learn from him, but he taught me so much more! Drew taught me about musical expression, tone and all the little details behind flute playing. His teachings challenged and motivated me. My peers and band teacher have noticed my improvement and progress. Thanks to Drew, I can now play with confidence and poise. -Emma

My two kids have now had five piano lessons with Drew and we have booked further.
My impression on day one had been that he is highly motivated, energetic and professional. His relative youth combined with authority makes him a great teacher for teens. First impressions were correct.
My kids like him a lot and they are already playing recognizable tunes. :)
I heartily recommend Drew for Flute and Piano.

The first beginner lessons focus on getting comfortable with the piano keys and understanding the relationship with notes. I like to use known melodies for children so they can distinguish early if something does not sound right. This also helps putting together notes on paper and getting into reading music for more advanced lessons.

About Matthew
I am a graduate student pursuing an MFA in Electronic Music and received my dual degree BM from Berklee College of Music in Composition and Electronic Production and Design.

I am an alto/tenor saxophonist and clarinetist, performing in symphonic wind ensembles, orchestras, and musical theatre pit ensembles. I also sing in concert choirs as a baritone/bass, and have played lead and supportive roles on stage in musical theatre shows.

As a composer I write choral, chamber, musical theatre and electroacoustic music. My other works include sonic installation pieces that encompass recording, sampling, mixing, surround sound, and production. I have also written music and created sound effects for several video games and trailers.

I can teach composition, orchestration, and basics in mixing, production, and sound design. In instrumental
studies I teach classical, contemporary, or musical theatre pit orchestra, and musical theatre training for voice and/or acting.

I customize the beginning or more advanced student’s plan according to their musical goals. Main focus is on learning to play and read music fluently on the piano or keyboard. If they need help or tutoring in Music Theory I have a few years experience. Also experience with the California Certificate of Merit program and students who want to learn and play just for fun!

About Georgia
I have over thirty years of experience teaching piano and tutoring music theory with students of all ages from age 4 to senior citizens! Young or older beginners and students who want to refresh their piano training from years ago are especially welcome as I am patient and like to set up reachable goals in small steps.
I like to work with beginners especially because I truly enjoy watching them grow into proficient players playing music they enjoy. Most of my students want to get a solid piano background playing music they love as well as becoming a proficient reader of music. And that is my goal!

I am a member of the California Music Teachers Association and also participate in the Certificate of Merit program if the students want to participate.
I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Theory and piano from the Wisconsin College Conse
rvatory of Music and a Master of Arts degree in Music Composition from Mills College.

Lessons with Matthew aren't your typical run-of-the-mill boring piano lesson. Matthew incorporates all aspects of music to make each lesson as interesting diverse and to cover as many different subjects as possible to maintain the student's interest. With the explosion of technology happening at such an exponential rate these days bringing aspects of that technology into our lessons is a very intrintegral and fun part of the lesson where students can explore theory,sight-reading and ear-training... the list goes on. As we begin to learn more about what type of music that the student enjoys what type of learning style is best then we can really Taylor some of these very useful Technologies and different methods that have been written over the years to make your student's experience truly a fun one!

I have 12 years of Piano experience since I was 6 years old. I have experiences in teaching CPR, First Aid, foreign languages, and swimming. I haven't been able to practice as much in college, so I will only teach beginner for now. I have participated and achieved awards in numerous recitals and a Bach competition. I will teach how to sight read, play well with emotions, and select appropriate difficulty pieces.

About Edward
I'm going to be a 3rd year student at Pepperdine University pursuing an Engineering degree. I'm a huge language learner, being able to converse in about 8 languages but I only wish to teach 3 of them for now. As someone who prefers self studying to learning from classrooms, I've perfected the method for students to improve drastically from their previous lesson by self preparing. I prefer to teach online especially for further students but those that are close I wouldn't mind commuting. My hours are pretty flexible during the weekdays.
