My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Once or twice a year we'll also stage a larger event off site for more individual students and bands classes to perform.
Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Music Stands

*A P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console and Yamaha organ

*A MicroKorg Synthesizer

*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, Saxophone, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

About Kathryn
I teach Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in San Francisco

Because of my limited availability, I do not offer in-home lessons. :)

From the moment Kat was tall enough to reach the keys she made so much noise on her family's piano that they eventually bought a kid-sized version to keep in her room. When Kat turned 7 her family got her the best present ever; lessons with an amazing piano teacher.

Kat also began to study flute several years later and soon realized that music was the life for her. She majored in music in both high school and college graduating with a BA in Music from St. Norbert College in DePere, Wisconsin.

Kat has a very diverse career in music. From a full-time private music teacher to the Musical Director of a Burning Man Opera, to the Section Leader for a Youth Orchestra, to the keyboard player in a Theatrical Heavy Metal Band, Kat is always thrilled to stretch her wings and try new things.

*** Lesson Details ***

I teach Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays in San Francisco.
I teach Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays in Oakland

I have a ridiculous sense of humor. I believe in stickers, high fives, and celebratory fist-bumps. And yes, that goes for the adults as well.

I always looked forward to my lessons because they were so fun, even if I knew I hadn't practiced enough. That is exactly what I try to create for every student I work with.

Besides the humor, I customize lesson plans to fit you. Not just the types of music you want to learn, but HOW you learn. My number one goal is that you completely understand what you are learning. I don't mind in the least if I need to explain a new lesson 10 different ways-€“ we will work together until you really get it! Understanding what you're doing makes it so much more fun.

Have a favorite song stuck in your head, but the sheet music is still too hard? No problem. I'm happy to write the song out for you at your own level. I want you to enjoy yourself, and if that means Lady GaGa then I'm happy to oblige. I will probably stick Mozart in when you're not looking just to make sure you're learning a lot of different things, but that's what teachers are for.

Of course we cover fundamentals and start with the basics. I typically incorporate music theory and ear training with your lessons as well . In 6 months on piano, with regular practice, you will be comfortably reading music and playing songs you enjoy with both hands AT THE SAME TIME! (Gasp!) On flute in 6 months you will also be able to read music comfortably, will no longer feel like you are about to drop the flute at any given moment, will have a solid range of notes and have a solid feeling of control while you play.

I look forward to sharing music with you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
piano, seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
My number one goal is comprehension -to make sure that all of my students really understand what they are doing. I work very hard to ensure an atmosphere where all of my students - no matter their age - can feel comfortable to say "I don't understand".

I've spent a lot of time thinking about what I want from lessons again, so when I read Kat's bio she felt like a good fit for me. We had an excellent first lesson! I appreciate that Kat seeks to understand the cognitive learning process of each of her students and spends time listening and asking questions in order to understand where her students are in terms of their skills and knowledge of what they're interested in. I felt she tailored the lesson for me and for my individual needs. Equally important, I really like her and we had fun. I'm excited to be taking lessons again.

About Gabriel
I view my role as an educator to be bigger than simply training a performer. I believe in creating a complete musician--one who thinks deeply about music. I accomplish this by working on, yes, the technical aspects of playing an instrument, but also through constant listening, ear-training, theory education, and history education. I engage both children and adults through fun activities that build musical knowledge.

*** Lesson Details ***
I take a multi-pronged approach to music education and, likewise, to lessons. Depending on the age and ability of the student, a lesson typically involves a brief warm-up followed by review of earlier material, introduction of new concepts or discussion of improvement areas, then a look forward at what to work on this week. The material ranges from technical exercises such as scales, thirds, finger p
atterns, etc. to ear-training activities, progressive study pieces, and long-term repertoire projects. For some students, I also add listening or light research assignments to encourage musical discovery.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have flutes to rent to students for a small maintenance fee. I provide all of the educational materials for piano students though may ask a student to purchase a book or two. I occasionally can provide or lend sheet music, but mostly I expect the student to purchase those materials as well as books for theory/history.

*** Specialties ***
My flute students receive methods all over the board from Marcel Moyse, Taffanel, and Gaubert to Trevor Wye and Wagner. My theoretical knowledge is quite comprehensive and always taught through a historical lens. My piano students (I have several young beginners currently) receive combined methods from Bartók, Faber and Faber, Bastien, Donald Waxman, and many of my own inventive techniques. I have experience with special needs students, especially with neuroatypical students.

I believe in teaching strong fundamentals so that we can have a solid foundation to build on. Good tone and an understanding of embouchure are most important, and we will develop technique. I enjoy helping students achieve their goals and develop their talents.

About Victoria
Victoria came to the Bay Area in 2015 from Atlanta, Georgia where she received her music degree from Georgia State University. She has been playing the flute for 15 years and is knowledgeable in music theory and aural skills. Her teachers have included Allison Gillon and Sarah Ambrose, and has participated in masterclasses with professionals such as: Julien Beaudiment (former principal at LA Philharmonic), Christina Smith (principal at Atlanta Symphony), and Viviana Guzman (international touring artist) to name a few.

She has participated in many ensembles ranging from chamber groups, wind ensembles and orchestras, and performed a solo recital in her senior year at GSU. She also performed with Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps on trumpet in 2011 and 2012. She has taught several high school marching bands since 2011 and currently w
orks with the Homestead High School Marching Band while maintaining a private studio. She also plays with the Foothill Symphonic Winds.

She believes in teaching strong fundamentals. Students will have the opportunity to perform in recitals, audition for local ensembles and at the state level, and often reach the top chairs in their school bands. Lessons are tailored to fit each student's specific needs and goals. All levels of experience are accepted; whether you are just beginning, an intermediate player, prepping for an audition, or picking it back up after a long break.

In her free time Victoria enjoys traveling, camping, hiking, reading, dance, and gymnastics.

With my 15 years of experience and a Bachelor's and Master's degree in flute performance, you can expect lessons from me to be the highest quality. I have years of experience teaching dozens of flutists of all ages, and I make sure to adjust my teaching to the needs of each individual student. Everybody is different, so I want to make sure students get the most out of their experience! Young beginners will begin in methods such as Patricia George's "Flute 101" series or Kathleen Blocki's flute method series, while intermediate and advanced players will have a more comprehensive approach with studies in tone development, technique enhancement, etudes, and solo repertoire.

About Drew
As a recent recipient of a Master's Degree in Flute Performance from Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music, Drew Powell is a promising young flutist and highly sought after flute teacher. For 15 years, he has participated in numerous music competitions, festivals, and performance opportunities, both as a soloist and part of ensembles, and actively continues to do so. He is an advocate of the arts and passionate about spreading the gift of music, which has lead him to teach over 30 students (and counting!) in just the past 3 years.

Drew won the 2017 Myrna Brown Artist Competition (an international competition with no age limit) hosted by the Texas Flute Society. He was recently invited to be a guest artist at the 2018 Texas Flute Society Annual Convention, where he taught several masterclasses and gave solo performances.

*
**My Vision***
I seek students who share a love of learning. I am not looking for the finest musicians or highest IQ's, because those gifts are not required to learn and grow. My greatest experiences as a teacher have come from when I work with students who just want to learn more.

***My Requirements***
I hold my students to high expectations when it comes to practicing. Each week, I give students individual assignments that I know will improve their learning and playing abilities, and I expect those assignments to be fulfilled by the next lesson. A failure to do so will result in frustration for both myself and my student.

However, I know that nobody is perfect, and I myself have had my share of weeks where life happens, and I simply don't progress as much as I would like. As a teacher, I understand this perfectly, and I will always strive to listen to my students, and work with them through their difficulties or struggles.

***What To Expect From Lessons***
I bring a lot of energy to lessons! I am very passionate about teaching and helping students grow, and I make sure to bring that to every lesson. I give concise, direct feedback to students, making sure to give them the information they need to understand how they can achieve their goals and grow.

I am very perceptive of students' feelings, and I take care to be sensitive to their needs each week. My worst fear as a teacher is to cause hurt feelings, so I will do everything in my power to avoid that!

I am an expert in the field of music and the flute, so you can be rest assured that the quality of instruction will be the highest.

In the few months that I've had flute lessons with Drew, I've grown so much. As a beginner in flute, I was completely scared and overwhelmed with taking band for the first time. Knowing I needed lessons, I'm so glad that I was paired with Drew. On my first lesson, Drew asked me what my goals were and I told him that it was to just simply read the notes on the page. That's all I expected to learn from him, but he taught me so much more! Drew taught me about musical expression, tone and all the little details behind flute playing. His teachings challenged and motivated me. My peers and band teacher have noticed my improvement and progress. Thanks to Drew, I can now play with confidence and poise. -Emma

My impression on day one had been that he is highly motivated, energetic and professional. His relative youth combined with authority makes him a great teacher for teens. First impressions were correct.

I teach music from the perspective of a modern musician and a songwriter. I want to make sure you are relaxed and having fun, as well as learning everything you want to learn in these lessons! We will get you playing songs you enjoy, right from the start. The most important thing to me, is for my students to have fun during their lessons, because real learning comes from commitment, and commitment comes much easier when you enjoy what you do.

About Loralee
Loralee began exploring music at a very young age, as part of a musical household. She enrolled in flute lessons at the age of 4, giving her solid roots in music theory and an appreciation for classical music. Her flute lessons later led her to take part in marching band and numerous musical ensembles. Aside from her love of music, 15 years of performing and studying dance led her to discover her joy in teaching when she began to teach creative movement and ballet to young dancers. In college, she began learning guitar and writing music to match a growing passion for songwriting and acoustic folk music. Her musical pursuits led her to join a local alt pop/punk band as a vocalist, and she performed with them in the surrounding area. After graduating with a B.A. at Michigan State University, Loralee began to pursue a career as a solo musici
an, and released a 4 song EP “If You Were a Song”. Now, she has written hundreds of songs and performs her original music in the San Francisco area.

Hello!

I am a private music instructor specializing in woodwind instruments looking to take on clarinet, flute and saxophone students in the Orange County area!

My lessons consist of a well balanced coverage of exercises (scales, note patterns, etudes, duets, major repertoire, etc) geared towards building a solid foundation in playing technique. This allows each student to be accurate and expressive with a sense of ease in their playing! Students of the studio are also thrown into the world of music! They are strongly encouraged to attend concerts, listen to music regularly, and attend masterclasses. The goal is not just to learn an instrument, but to also develop a life-long love and appreciation for music!

I am very proud to say that my students soar through their band and orchestra programs in school and obtain a sound quality/sense of musicality way beyond their grade level! The majority of my students excel past their school music programs! They join youth/honor bands ...

About Carter
I believe that everyone has the ability to enjoy and be expressive on an instrument. It is miss instruction and a lack of passion in music education that allows students to become frustrated and bored, ultimately pushing them to quit their instruments.

My goal as a music educator is not only to teach the mechanics of an instrument, but to also inspire a life-long passion for music. Therefore I make a point to encourage students to explore all the music there is to be had in their surrounding environment! This includes attending concerts, listening to great recordings and savoring all the music that our modern-day media has to offer!

With this consistent musical exploration I teach a thorough curriculum of scales, exercises, duets and standard solo repertoire pieces. Surrounding all this is a foundation in music theory. This pedagogi
cal study will enable a fun and easy experience when students pick up their instruments to perform music!

In addition to this private study I strongly encourage my students to pursue extra-curricular musical activities outside their school music programs. This includes auditioning for honor bands/orchestras, chamber music, music competitions and effective musical examinations such as Certificate of Merit. I believe a constant setting and achieving of goals is the foundation of growth in anything we do and music is no exception.

I am proud to say that the majority of my students develop great interest in classical music, fueling them to push past their difficulties and achieve a high standard of musical performance!

I have developed a simple and easy to understand methodology that helps students sound great right away, giving them tangible tools for playing better and making progress. My focus is to give my students what they need to enjoy the art of making music and play with confidence and ease.

Throughout the years I have helped students win full scholarships to major conservatories, prepare for competitions as well as guide and help young beginners and amateur adult students alike.

About Marco
I am a long time master flute teacher with a vast background of experience as an educator and performer both nationally and internationally, having maintained a varied career as an innovative chamber and orchestral musician, an international concerto and recital soloist, and a master flute teacher. I am super excited to be here to share my knowledge and expertise with students of all ages and ability.

I am a specialist on Latin American music, and my repertoire spans from folk to classical music. Since my New York City debut recital at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in 1991, I have gone on to perform in Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium for “Sonidos Latinos”, a celebratory festival of Latin American music. I have performed the Jacques Ibert Flute Concerto and the Mozart Concerto for Flute and Harp with the New York City Symphony at
Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and Merkin Concert Hall, and have been a featured recital soloist at Wigmore Hall in London. I have performed with many of the leading symphony orchestras in Venezuela, my native country, premiering both the Jacques Ibert and Aram Khachaturian flute concerti with the Maracaibo and Venezuelan Symphony Orchestras respectively. In Peru, I gave the South American premiere of the Concerto for Flute and Orchestra by Mexican composer Samuel Zyman with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Lima. As an international soloist, my performances have taken me all over the world, including South Africa, Slovenia, Scotland, Japan, and China to name a few.

In the United States, I have frequently been a featured artist at the National Flute Convention, flute associations, and multiple artist series. Highlights of my 2016 and 2017 season include solo recitals at the New Jersey Flute Society, the Colorado Flute Association, the Arizona Flute Society, and the Utah Flute Association. Other solo recitals this season include performances at the Wilson Center in Milwaukee, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Suzuki Association of the Americas Biannual Conference, Four Seasons Arts in Oakland, and the Chamber Music Society of Detroit.

I have served as principal flute with The New York City Symphony Orchestra, Opera Northeast, and L’Orchestra in the Berkshires, and as associate principal flute with the Venezuelan Symphony Orchestra. In New York City, I performed with the Mostly Mozart Festival, and on Broadway for the musicals Miss Saigon, Annie, Showboat, and The Sound of Music.

An avid chamber musician, I have performed at The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, and with such distinguished artists as clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera, flutist William Bennett, flutist Ransom Wilson, harpist Nancy Allen, and oboist Heinz Holliger. I am a founding member of the chamber ensemble Classical Jam and have been a member of many critically acclaimed ensembles, among which are Triangulo, a Latin American Chamber Trio, and Quintet of the Americas. While with Quintet of the Americas, I performed at Carnegie Hall, The Bermuda International Music Festival, Chamber Music Northwest, Alice Tully Hall and Merkin Concert Hall.

On radio broadcasts, I have been featured nationwide as both a host and performer on NPR’s “Performance Today”. With host Fred Child, I was the featured artist for the program “Around New York” on WNYC. Other radio appearances include live performances on WQXR in New York City with Classical Jam. I have recorded on such recording labels as CRI, Chesky Records, MMC Records, Koch World, XLNT Records and Soundbrush Records. My solo recording are: “Music of Venezuela”, virtuoso flute music by living Venezuelan composers; “Luna”, a romantic serenade of songs from Venezuela and South America for flute and guitar; “Tango Dreams”, a compilation of works by Astor Piazzolla; and “Amanecer”, a collection of Venezuelan flute favorites.

Throughout my career I have been a dedicated educator, and a professional teaching artist, having hosted, presented and developed programs for Lincoln Center Education, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, The New York Philharmonic, and Carnegie Hall to name a few. I was on faculty at the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Boston for over 6 years. Most recently, together with my wife, we founded an intensive training program for aspiring professional flutists.

Marco Granados is a consummate musician and flutist. I've been an admirer of his playing for many years, and the training that he offers flutists is grounded in the most successful and time-honored traditions of flute technique. His early training in Venezuela was superb, and he went on to study with the great Tom Nyfenger, among others and has had a brilliant career as a soloist and flute pedagogue. As a person, he is most supportive, kind, and encouraging to all, at all levels. I have watched him teach on many occasions, and can safely say that one really can't find a better flute teacher! Highly recommended.

I learned a lot in my years of studies with Prof Granados. He was kind but challenged me to become a better artist and flutist.

Marco was one of the best teachers I have ever had the privilege of studying with. He is an amazing musician and teacher and most importantly, a great person. He is extremely knowledgeable and he gave me many great tips on tone, technique and repertoire. I especially loved learning Latin music with him. Maybe I’ll start studying with him again if he begins teaching online!
