I teach and coach acting for musical theater and opera singing, as well as dialogue and accent coaching.

About Kathleen
I am a classically-trained opera singer. I have a Bachelors and Masters in Vocal Performance and Vocal Pedagogy (teaching), and have sung professionally in the U.S. and Europe. I have sung Opera, Operetta, Musical Theater and Concerts, as well as choral and cantorial singing. I have been a finalist and winner of vocal competitions in both the United States and Europe.
I have been teaching voice since 1980, and have worked with students of all ages, from 14 to 75. I have also directed and designed for musical theater and opera. Because I love singing, I want to bring that to my students as well, whatever kind of music they want to sing. I love children, but I do not work with girls or boys younger than 14.

In addition to music, I also teach English (ESL), Accent Reduction, German, U.S. & World History. I have my CBEST C
redential And ESL Certification. I do private tutoring and teach classes.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that learning how to breath is the key to good singing. After 3 months of study, my students will have learned how to breathe, which improves both their singing and speaking voices. Good breathing is the key to good singing and a healthy voice. With a healthy, well-trained voice, my students can be valuable members of any vocal ensemble, and enjoy their singing, For solo singing, good breathing is most important, whether singing opera, musical theater or pop music, because it gives a beautiful, full quality to the voice.
I always begin a lesson with warm-up exercises, to check breathing and vocal placement. Once the (vocal) engine is warmed-up, then we begin to sing. I try to get to know my students, so that, together, we can choose music that will enable them to reach their goals and is both fun and challenging for them to sing.

In addition to music, I also teach English (ESL), Accent Reduction, German, U.S. & World History. I have my CBEST Credential And ESL Certification. I do private tutoring and teach classes.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Separate studio with Piano
I have a MacBook Pro laptop computer + stereo speakers, to provide recorded accompaniment, when necessary.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If a student wishes to have on-site lessons, I require that a piano or keyboard be available for the lessons.
I usually travel with my MacBook Pro laptop computer & stereo speakers, to provide recorded accompaniment, when necessary.

*** Specialties ***
I am a trained opera/oratorio singer, but I teach Broadway, Pop, choral and classical singers.

I have had many international students who didn't speak English well. Music is an international language that helps me communicate with all of my students!

Excellent Voice Teacher

Mrs. B is a wonderful and dedicated teacher who focuses diligently during class sessions. She thoroughly explains terms and technique and is friendly and sociable. Her extensive knowledge of languages comes extremely useful in Italian arias and other folk songs as to explain the meanings of words and to convey motion. Her classes are enjoyable and fun, while still being comprehensively academic.

As the creator and producer of San Diego IndieFest and Say It Records, I have a unique understanding of the industry, and love to share that with my students.

It's paramount to me that each student's lesson be customized to her / his specific goals and needs. Whether those are for personal enrichment or for professional aspirations, your lesson will be personalized according to what's important to you.

I LOVE to teach, and appreciate my wee ones just as much as my elders...those who consider themselves "tone deaf" as much as my advanced students. As far as Special Needs go - I feel we *ALL* have special needs....every child and every adult! ;)

About Danielle
Hello Students / Parents!

I specialize in providing a safe, fun and empowering space for each student to reach their goals - whether that be for the novice whose been wrongfully told they shouldn't pursue their passion, the more experienced musician/actor/poet/speaker looking to do more, or the budding artist looking to develop the talent and vision within them. I'm fluent in English and Spanish and have experience singing and recording in many languages.

I always remember the inspiration and patience I received from my best teachers, so I strive to provide exactly that to my own students. I sing and teach most vocal styles, with the exception of opera and screamo, and utilize my studio to create a supportive, non-judgemental experience singing, acting, speaking, writing and recording. I absolutely love teaching both children and ad
ults and look forward to learning how to best support each one of my students in their individual path toward realizing their potential.

Here's a bit about my background and musical experience:

Bachelors of Fine Arts degree (Theatre/Voice) from United States International University Graduated Valedictorian
Chula Vista School of Creative and Performing Arts Graduated Valedictorian
Workshops and studies with Directors, Voice and Acting Teachers Bill Doyle, Roy Mote, Andrew Barnicle, Jack Tygett, Leanne Summers, Anne Farnsworth, among others.

"After seeing Danielle, I was impressed with her intensity as a performer. Her ability to get behind a lyric was stunning, she lives every line. As an artistic performer, I've yet to see better."
-Tony Ferguson / Interscope Records: No Doubt, Bush, Fisher

My original band, Danielle and The Masses, has been recording and performing since 2001. We are endorsed by Justin Tranter, Ani Difranco, The Black Eyed Peas, The Bruce Hornsby Band, among others, and have shared the stage with Jamie Foxx, CAKE, Metric, En Vogue, David Byrne, Berlin, Margaret Cho, Cyndi Lauper, Jonatha Brooke, Beth Hart, Semi Precious Weapons and more.

I have written and performed music and voice over for Ace Ventura, Nutty Professor, VH1, various TV shows and independent documentaries, Eveoke Dance Theatre, among others, and have recorded eight professional CDs of various styles on various record labels.

For over fifteen years, my record / production company, Say It Records has been producing socially conscious music events throughout San Diego and Southern California that promote independent music, film, art, community, human and environmental rights. I also co-own Durga Sound, a teaching and production studio, with producer Alicia Champion. The two of us created and produced San Diego IndieFest for over ten years, a powerful community event promoting and supporting independent music, film, art and civic engagement.

I have a great time utilizing my contacts in the industry to help my students get work/ press / entrance into the schools, agencies and studios of their choice. For example, we were able to book many musicians on the TV show GLEE, among others, as well as help students get their music placed in commercials, film and the like.

*** Lesson Details ***
I start on the first lesson by becoming clear about what the new student's goals and desires are from there, we start developing technique to achieve those goals along with having fun right away doing what they came for - singing, writing, voice over, acting or using a combination of these things be it for professional purposes or personal fulfillment. Every lesson is personally customized to meet the specific goals of each student. As a teacher, I'm encouraging and fun, passionate and positive. While I'm definitely not "strict", I do appreciate focus and drive. However, I often work with people who have special needs and are working on developing those very things. I'm especially good at helping people through progress plateaus, roadblocks, stage fright, loss/ stress. Using music as a means of release and healing - for both kids and adults - is something I do a lot of and am very comfortable with.

As far as technique is concerned, I focus on utilizing posture, correct breathing and developing relaxed, strong support, so that the muscles are developed properly. We want the voice to develop without stress, enabling the student to constantly grow while steering clear of any injury that can happen as a result of straining, not to mention other habits that manifest when we sing without proper technique.

I strongly encourage students to record their lessons on a mobile device so they can practice easily on their own, and so they eventually have a record of how far they've grown.
We mostly use tracks to develop repertoire, prepare for auditioning and performances, and to have fun singing the music that excites each student the most.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Apple Mac Pro Quad Core running OS 10.8.3
Avid Pro Tools 10 HDX
Propellor Reason 4.0
UA 2-610 Microphone Pre-amp
UA LA-610 Microphone Pre-amp and Compressor
UA Teletronix LA2A Compressor/ Limiter
Behringer ADA 8000
more...

*** Specialties ***
Using music, writing and voice as a means of expressing yourself, growing as a performance artist, coping in challenging times, as well as a means of going professional and earning income are all areas I specialize in. Utilizing proper technique and learning how to sing / speak safely is also an area I focus on a great deal.

Learning precisely what each student wants is the key factor in my decision on how to achieve their goals. For example, using Speech Level Singing is definitely entrenched in my teaching, but I may not highlight it as much for those who want a more classical sound.

I excel with the following: first timers, very young kids, students working through stage fright, artists looking to develop their own original project, those seeking growth in their process of writing / recording / performing, those who are interested in using music and / or writing as therapy as well as with amateurs who've always wanted to do something musical but who think they are "too old" or too "untalented/short/tall/ fill in the blank" to try. I believe we all have something to say with our lives - finding the voice within you can be an incredibly powerful and transformative experience!

The rating says it all. Best. Instructor. Ever. Danielle is amazing. She's so patient and kind and loving. Half the reason I take lessons from her is because she makes me feel so good about myself. She's so much more than a singing teacher. She's a creative guide. She will help you move beyond self doubt and explore your creativity. And of course, my rhythm and pitch are improving rapidly. Can't recommend her enough!

I was pretty nervous about taking a singing lesson, as it's something I've never done in my life. I'm so thankful I got connected to Deborah. She's a fantastic teacher and taught me so much about how our body works to produce sounds when singing and what I am doing. From the first lesson I was already given helpful tips and ways to practice things on my own! I'm looking forward to more lessons with Deborah.

How to start, and keep going. How to feel good about the journey and create a great impression at the end - with new awareness, confidence and skills! Basic tasks in any personal endeavor, and having an audience watch you do it all is thrilling - and nerve-wracking! These are all learnable practices with inspiring work on "Meaning?", "Walking the Character", "Stress Words, Not Yourself", "The Gift of Public Speaking!", "Yes, and...", "I've Got Choices?" and "Your Method". Film, TV, Stage, Life.

About Andy
Andy is a positive, knowledgable teacher and coach for anyone having/wanting to work in front of an audience or meeting, having to memorize text, analyze lines, sentences, plots and sell a story. Sessions search for paths to confidence as well as competence. A performer, director and teacher for over 30 years, I've studied teachers and students to learn that whatever frees a person to be comfortable with a task, and with the effort to develop skills, is a wonderful 'method'. We'd use movement, what-ifs, and references to life and death! And humor. Clients include a featured Narrator for SFGMC's winter show, an actor needing a monologue coach for her move to L.A., peninsula teens auditioning for their school musicals, and Bay Area youth and senior theater companies, and local community and professional performers. I taught high school dram
a while directing and acting in new and published plays and musicals in San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland, Ross, Pacifica, New Haven and Los Angeles.

Felicity is amazing, and make no mistake, she is a brilliant actor AND screenwriter herself. I think that it's this combination that makes her such an effective teacher. She totally gets subtext, and she helps her students dig deep to understand where their character is coming from. When I was preparing to audition for a part in a play earlier this year, she helped me create an entire subtext and backstory, so that by the time I auditioned, I had already totally embodied my character. I nailed it, and I got the part. I definitely recommend Felicity to anyone, any age, looking for acting lessons, or who is already in a play, film, or TV production and needs nuanced fine-tuning. She's the best.

Felicity knew exactly how to work with our 7-year old daughter Margot and prepare her for a big role in Yada's production of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Not only was Felicity extremely patient and engaging, she knew which cues to give in order to help Margot improve, and as an actress herself, she knew HOW to help and what to say. When we saw Margot perform on stage, I knew just what Felicity had contributed and I saw Margot put it to practice. I would recommend working with Felicity in a heartbeat.

As a television and theatre actor for 14 years who became an award-winning director and screenwriter, I have a particularly well-rounded perspective on acting. My belief is that anyone can act, if given the right tools. Most importantly, it's about exploring yourself -- who you really are as a human being and having confidence in that unique individual -- that moves audiences and brings a character to life. We will also use my expertise on the other side of the camera to explore how to work with directors, as well as the writer's perspective on your character's function in the larger story. I look forward to setting your talents loose on the world!

About Zach
Hi! I'm a television and theatre actor-turned award-winning director and screenwriter. I've done theatre in New York and all over the world (including touring in "Les Misérables" and being an original cast member of "Heathers: The Musical"), and I've acted in television shows like "Switched at Birth" (ABC Family), "The Good Wife" and "How I Met Your Mother" (CBS).

I moved behind the camera in 2014, and have since directed 3 multi award-winning independent short films, as well as writing original screenplays in various stages of purchase and development for feature film production and primetime television.

I absolutely love to teach and have for many years along the way of my career. I've helped students explore their passion and hone their acting skills in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, my native Oregon, and even in South Africa.
I genuinely believe that anyone can act if given the right tools to have confidence in what they uniquely bring to the stage or the set. I look forward to sharing my all-encompassing perspective on acting with you and setting your talent loose on the world!

Need help prepping for an audition? Interested in warm-up techniques that make you feel more in your body? Curious about the variations of methods from Stella Adler to Alexander Technique to Stanislavski to Uta Hagen? Striving to understand how to understand how to get to the gut of a character? Just feel like being goofy and getting out of your head? All ages are welcome. Lessons are customized around the needs/goals of each student. In my class you will build a strong foundation for the base techniques of character study, improvisational techniques, scene study. When do you want to jump in?

About Kaitlyn
Hi there, y'all! I'm Kaitlyn, otherwise known as Tega.

I've been all around the coasts of the U.S. starting from New Jersey, down south to Atlanta, and now hailing from Oakland in California. I come from a BFA in Performing Arts from Savannah College of Art and Design, and have been acting, improvising, and writing for over 10 years now.

To be frank- I am less interested in me, and more interested about you. I believe that the base of performing comes from truth and trust in your gut, and so that requires you to be honest with who you are internally and who you are among others. That being said, let's dig into what you bring to the table. There is a performer in each of us, it is just a matter of giving them a little nudge.
