Theatrical Dance

I am a New York based actor, singer, and dancer with seven years of experience performing. A graduate of Marymount Manhattan College's musical theatre program in 2017, I have had the pleasure of working with fantastic vocal coaches, teachers, and acting professors who have shaped me to the performer I am today. 
Voice students can expect a judgement free and nurturing environment while having fun at the same time. My specialty is Musical Theatre coaching, but I am available for pop / rock, country, or classical vocal techniques. With me, students will be able to break down any song, both melody and acting beats, sing songs in a healthy manner that they can duplicate with ease, and sing with the utmost confidence. 
As acting coach, I will help students create audition cuts, complete with rehearsal tracks and accompaniment tracks available for self tapes, and will coach them to perform it magnificently every time.

I am a professional dancer who has been working in the industry for over a decade. I have worked around the country performing in many different musicals. 
I graduated with a B.F.A. in Dance from The Boston Conservatory. I have been teaching dance professionally for the past thirteen years and I specialize in ballet, tap and theatre dance. I am also a certified Barre instructor through Exhale Spa in New York City. I teach all ages and cater to the specific needs of each student. I believe in positivity, encouragement, and share my passion of dance with all of my students. If you are a beginner wanting to learn a new skill, or a more advanced student wanting to hone your skills, come dance with me!

PLEASE NOTE: I do not teach social or ballroom dancing. This includes wedding dances, couple dancing or learning how to dance for a wedding. I also do not choreograph dances for submission videos.

Really patient and encouraging! I'm a beginner when it comes to dance / choreo but she was still very supportive and positive. You'll have a lot of fun taking a lesson with her!

Ferlyn has excellent skills in teaching dance. My daughter has improved her dance techniques in 3 classes. We highly recommend her to everyone that needs dance instructor.

Given all of the positive reviews, I am refraining from giving Ferlyn only one star. I am sure she is relatively competent as a teacher. The unfortunate aspect for which she is receiving such a poor review is a significant lack of professionalism.
I arranged piano lessons with Ferlyn for my mother.
Her first lesson (for which I was present) was fine.
I then found out that at their second lesson, Ferlyn showed up very sick. This was quite concerning, especially given my mother’s age. Ferlyn definitely should have canceled that second lesson and not showed up so sick. 
Then, only two hours (!) before my mother’s scheduled third lesson, I receive a text message from Ferlyn stating the following:
“Hi Dominique, wanted to let you and your mom that piano lessons will be cancelled today because it is my Birthday! I will see her next week. :)”
This was incredible. This was a cancellation only two hours prior, not due to some emergency or even due to her illness which should have caused a cancelation the week before! This was because it was her birthday. Something that would have been understandable, were she to have let us know well in advance. I am sure she knew in advance when her birthday is.
This does not reflect on TakeLessons, as I have had great experiences with other teachers.
But this degree of inconsiderateness, first with regard to the illness and then with regard to the manner of cancellation, is appalling.

My History of Theatrical Dance:
I have been teaching dance for 25+ years. My training in theatrical dance stems from my training at California State University, Los Angeles. This training includes hip hop, tap, modern, jazz, ballet, choreography, theory, stage management skills all within the combination of experience in various musical productions. My main method of training is through theatrical tap and lyrical dance.

My Teaching Method:
I assess each students' levels, knowledge and styles of learning, determine the best learning paths to incorporate into the lesson and bring a "natural movement" approach of training and education.

With my method, this is to provide a collaborative & supportive environment as well as actively develop a person's life, culture and well-being. I strive to take a step further and deeper within the mind of the person who is learning dance and music to find one's "True Inner Dancer/Musician."

Chrystie is a wonderful teacher.  She can break steps down and help build muscle memory.  She is fun. She is an enthusiastic instructor and choreographer.  She is alway on time and ready to go. I enjoy every lesson and my own practice sessions.  I recommend her all of the time!

Chrystie is so positive and fun. She is very knowledgable and patient.  We are pretty uncoordinated but she is so encouraging and we are having a blast.  My 9 year old wanted to take tap with me but we couldn't find any place that would allow kids and adults together plus I travel a lot for work so I needed flexibility in the timing of classes.  I'm really thankful that there is the ability to take classes like this and on our schedule.  We are having so much fun with Chrystie that we have been talking about expanding to other types of dance.  She is a wonderful teacher!

Meet your dance instructor. I have my bachelors degree from Chapman University in Theatre & Dance. My training includes Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Folk Dance, Dance History, Hip-Hop, Musical Theatre, Improv, and Kinesiology, among other dance-related subjects. 

I teach my lessons just like many of you take lessons, when and wherever I can. I have taught in my living room, and local parks, I teach from conference rooms when I have to travel, or frommy backyard. One of the benefits of online classes is that it allows you the flexibility to do the things you love no matter where you are. I also teach from the perspective that I'm the same as you. I'm a busy mom juggling 4 kids and 2 jobs. Sound familiar? Making time in our day to chase our passions or just to fit in a fun workout is a way of working on our discipline and creating good dance habits that will supplement any additional in-person lessons you may be taking. 

I  grew up in a small town in Southern Illinois. Lessons were few and far between so I would copy dancing off of movies and videos in order to perform at local dances or for other community events. As a youth, I took country line dancing classes. Always drawn to anything involving dance and movement, I auditioned and performed with a Disney Showcase Troupe. By high school, I was choreographing for the Show Choir, as well as performing in theatrical productions, including the musical “The Wizard of Oz”. 

Before graduating with my Bachelor’s degree in Theatre & Dance from Chapman University in Orange, California, I continued my study of various dance styles & techniques such as: Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Hip Hop, Ballroom, Dunham Technique, yoga/stretch, Dance Business & History. From 1996-2001 I performed a variety of dancing and singing roles in showcases and events such as “American Celebration” and “The Story of Rock n’ Roll”. While studying at Chapman, I accepted a position as historian, and eventually, vice president of the performing arts society (PASC). 

When I wasn’t onstage, I could be found backstage working lights, sound, costuming,  or stage management. I searched out other educational opportunities at Cypress College and the Taggart International School where I studied West African dance and Russian Ballet Technique. After performing a liturgical dance performance for my graduation ceremony, I toured the United States and a portion of Canada, researching dance around the world. This eventually led me to Jacmel, Haiti, where I studied cultural and social dances of the local people. After that I took up Bellydance and studied folk dancing in Chicago, Illinois. 

Since 2001, I have taught classes for all ages from infants to adults. I have also studied child development and have a special love for bringing an adoration of the arts to the youngest artists in our communities. It is imperative that all my  teachings highlight body positivity and the belief that everyone can dance. A life-long learner and dance aficionado, I continue my dance studies in Ballroom, Baroque Dance, and Scottish Country Dance. My influences include Isadora Duncan, Katherine Dunham, Misty Copeland, & Sean Greene. 

and Hello Artists: we are also learning the basics of face painting for fun, parties and festivals. Face & body painting can add flair to your dancing as well, creating more depth to your costuming and stage presence. Or just learn it because its fun!

Amber was amazing! First time acting in a play and she helped my daughter really understand what she needed to do for the audition. She was interactive and knew about the topic she was trying to teach. I know it definitely helped nail her audition. 10/10 recommend! 

Amber was great! She did a fantastic job helping my daughter with her first audition and walked her though steps and visualizing the character. Lesson itself was engaging and kept focus. She even did a follow up message asking how she did. Very much enjoyed hearing my daughter talk about her lessons with Amber. Would definitely take more lessons with her in the future. Wow, Amber was amazing! My granddaughter has been into theatre for three years, and in just one lesson with Amber, she was able to learn so much. Amber is incredibly patient and encouraging, making the entire experience an absolute delight. Amber is an Alumni Graduate from The American Musical and Dramatic Academy.She has had the privilege to perform with performers such as Snoop Dogg and Many more from Cirque Du Soleil, America’s Got Talent, and The Voice at Simon Hammerstein’s The Box NYC and London. She has also Preformed twice in “Livin’ La Vida Grande” with Frankie Grande and company. Along with performing in Venues such as Paradise Club and House of Yes. Assistant Choreographer for the musical "Sirens Den:A New Rock Musical" which premiered in NYC IN 2021.

Carolyn is an awesome teacher. She is skilled in many areas and uses those skills to educate and inspire others. During our lessons together she taught me a few ways that I can become more aware while practicing voice acting. She had me read different scripts that were used in real auditions. Carolyn began working professionally at 8 years old and has since appeared on stage, in national commercials, recorded voiceovers, and booked principal roles in both film and television. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2011 from the Boston Conservatory, where she majored in musical theater with an emphasis in directing. With years of extensive dance training, she's had the opportunity to perform the original Broadway choreography in several major productions she has been a part of, her favorite being the tap spectacular "42nd Street." As an award winning choreographer, her pieces have been recognized nationally at dance competitions across the country.

Born and raised in New York, Carolyn began working professionally at 8 years old and has since appeared on stage, in national commercials, recorded voiceovers, and booked principal roles in both film and television. A graduate of the Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music (BFA Musical Theatre, emphasis in directing), Carolyn is a veteran member of SAG/AFTRA/AEA. In her spare time, Carolyn has always loved working with people who have a passion for the arts. Her impressive client roster ranges from celebrities and Broadway professionals to children and adults who wish to explore the arts. Whether it’s in a classroom, at a dance studio, or sitting at the piano, Carolyn has worn the many hats of acting coach, voice teacher, dance instructor, music theory tutor, piano teacher, and college audition coach to name a few. Getting cast in Broadway shows, winning first place in national dance competitions, receiving perfect scores on vocal/piano NYSSMA solos, and being accepted to some of the most competitive college programs in the nation are just a few of her clients’ many accomplishments.

Since then, Carolyn has opened for artists such as Chase Rice, Ashley McBryde, Walker Hayes, and most recently, kicked off NY’s Country 94.7 Stars and Strings event at the Barclays Center starring Sam Hunt, Dustin Lynch, Chris Janson, Runaway June, and more. Carolyn sang the national anthem for the NY Mets and hosted (as well as performed on) both of Music Mayhem's virtual country festivals alongside Billy Ray Cyrus, Walker Hayes, Tenille Townes, and more. Additionally, her live acoustic cover of "When You Say Nothing At All'' was featured on Country Rebel, amassing nearly 500,000 views.
