I've taught music theory classes and privately for 20 yrs. I can help you to read music and improve your rhythm. I can also assist in A.P. music theory.
I use Julie Johnson's Guide to A.P Music Theory and The FJH Note Speller.

Students find that in a few short weeks they are improving in Music Theory classes and chorus/choir music is much easier to read.

About Carol
I've sung most of my life. I've been teaching since 1991. I listen to a lot of different singers but my real passion is jazz, Brazilian music and blues. I've performed in the US as well as England and Scotland. I also have recorded 2 Cd's.

I teach many different styles of music and work with beginners to advanced. My teaching studio is equipped with a P.A. system so that students can also work on their performance skills.

What's the first lesson like? When I first meet a new student I ask about what experience they've had singing. Even beginners sing in the shower or along with their favorite songs.

Finding out what kind of music the student listens to and wants to sing is also a big part of the first lesson. I find that it's more motivating and fun to work on songs that the student enjoys.

It's good for me to know if th
ey feel strain, tension or raspiness. I explain a little about how the vocal cords work, visualizing or picturing the action of the vocal cords and the muscles that work with them.

I encourage students to find their own images that they can relate to. We work on breathing, increasing range and power through vocal exercises. I have pre-recorded exercises for the student to work on during the week.

Working on songs is equally important. Knowing how to get the sound that is uniquely your own and expressing yourself without strain or damage to the vocal cords.

I have a warm down to earth approach to voice lessons. I'm laid back and very patient. This doesn't mean that I'm not demanding of my students. I'll help you find the best way to find practice time and enjoy the journey. In a few weeks you'll notice an easier time hitting those higher notes. In a few months you'll be singing songs with more freedom. You'll learn breathing, tone quality, how to increase range and power. We'll also work on performance and making a song all your own.

Carol is a pro and taking lessons from her has been one of the single best decisions I've made in a very long time. I love singing and she reminds me of that when I feel like I'm not that great at it. She has helped me to improve and to believe in myself and while lessons are structured she has the instinct of an artist to lift your spirits when that is what is lacking. There is something really special about a teacher who is coaching your spirit as well as your talent. I used to have a life coach but turns out Carol is that too. I recommend her highly.

I have studied, performed and taught music for over 30 years. Accordion was my first instrument at age 7 which was a great introduction to the keyboard, melody and harmony. I was born into a musical family and have studied classical piano since I was 4 years old! I am very well versed in music theory and proper technique, with an emphasis on avoiding player's injuries, as well as a great knowledge of classical Pieces for any skill level.

Lessons are held with a fun and relaxed attitude. Learning music should always be enjoyable and a good attitude and love for music is cultured and encouraged.

Lessons are structured just like a practice session should be. We will begin with a warm-up exercise designed to acquaint you with the proper technique to meet your personal musical goals. the next activities are highly personalized, but is usually something like reading music or a music theory game. These activities are things that are good for you but may not be your favorite part of learning music. They will, however, go a long way toward your better understanding of how your favorite music is structured.

Examples could be learning about 12 bar blues, common strum patterns (for guitar), scales, sight-reading, or music analysis.

We will spend the rest of class learning and practicing an activity of your choice. This is usually a song but can be anything you wish to improve upon. this is usually a long-term goal of yours. *I've always wanted to learn......*

By structuring our lessons the same as how you will practice, and by keeping good notes, it will be easy for you to take on practice at home and achieve all of your musical goals!

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students should have their own guitar/piano/keyboard etc. Guitar/violin students should also have a music stand and tuner to keep at home. I will bring picks, spare tuner, music, and handouts.

I primarily specialize in classical piano in styles such as Muzio Clementi and Frederic Chopin. I also play Bach and various Spanish classical guitar pieces. I have also extensively studied electric guitar in Blues such ZZ Top, Metal such as Metallica, and rock such as Led Zeppelin. Obviously very talented guitar play- but I prefer a teacher who knows traditional Hawaiian Ukelele. He left me with a lot to practice which is great - but I would prefer a teacher who knows the Uke better.

It is incredibly important for students to have a general understanding of music theory, regardless of their instrument. Music theory is the core of the music that we play and listen to, and it is a vital part of every student's music education. The point of music theory is to show students how music works, and for that reason, every music student should be exposed to it at some level.

Having started piano at the age of 7, I was taught music theory at a very beginning of my music education. I studied it throughout my childhood and into my collegiate years. I can teach this subject in detail and help the student develop a clear understanding of the music that they read and play.

About Sheila
Sheila's interest in music began at the age of seven when she began private instruction in classical piano, and by the age of ten, she began playing the flute. Sheila received her Bachelor of Music with a degree in Music Education from the University of Redlands, where she studied flute with Sara Andon. There, she performed in the university's Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Orchestra. During her third year at university, she studied abroad at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemet, Hungary.

Sheila has performed in many different venues around the world such as Tivoli Gardens in Denmark, the Edinburgh Trade Center in Scotland, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Greek Theater in Los Angeles and the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge, CA.

3, Sheila graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Masters degree in Flute Performance where she studied flute with Sandra Kipp. At CSUN, she performed in the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Northridge Flute Quartet, and various chamber ensembles. *** Lesson Details ***
My goal as a music educator is to foster excellence in the art of music through private instruction. I have worked with students of all ages ranging from 5 to older adults.

In my studio, students will learn to read music and have a well rounded music education. This means that we will work on a variety of things such as music theory, music history, and a wide range of repertoire (from Beethoven to the Beatles!) While I have high expectations for my students, I do my best to keep the lessons relaxed and lighthearted. My hope is that the student is always engaged and interested during lessons.

My three expectations:

1. Come prepared both mentally and physically (this is especially important for flutists-- make sure to warm up prior to the lesson!)

2. Don't be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. This is non-threatening territory, I'm here to guide you and help you. Remember that mistakes happen, we're human. Just make sure that you learn from those mistakes so as not to make the same ones and grow from each experience.

3. For parents-- BE INVOLVED! I can't tell you how often I've seen younger students excel when their parents were proactive in the experience. This means encouraging them to practice, coming up with a rewards system, and sometimes sitting in on the lesson to take notes so that you can work on what we did during the lesson at home together. It's difficult for music teachers to compete with iPads, Playstations and television, so let's get creative together!

*** Required Materials ***
Flute students must own a well maintained flute, as an instrument that is out of adjustment causes frustration and can initiate bad habits. In addition, the student must also have a metronome and tuner, a music stand, flute repertoire, and an assignment book for me to write down each week's assignments.

Piano students must have a working acoustic piano or digital piano in their home for piano lessons. The student must also have a metronome, piano repertoire, and an assignment book for each week's assignments.

Sounds way more serious than it needs to be though it is an important part of any musical education. The basics can be applied to any instrument or vocal study. And it can be fun!

About Steve
Learning to play music should be fun. Learning to play the songs you like and listen to everyday is a good first step in that direction.

As early as I can remember our house was filled with music. My parents had records of the popular music of the time as well as movie soundtrack albums. At eight years old I got my first trumpet and joined the school band. Soon I was taking private lessons. We also had a piano in the house and I often found myself sitting and trying out chords and melodies to fit the songs I would hear. At sixteen I got my first guitar, along with a songbook that promised I could play “hundreds of songs with just three magic chords”.

Moving west I studied music at West Los Angeles College and played trumpet in the school’s concert band. A group of us formed a jazz quintet and started playing gigs in and aroun
d LA. We then expanded the scope of the band by adding a second sax and more exotic percussion as well as incorporating elements of reggae and rock into our original music. This helped us land jobs at clubs like the Troubadour and larger venues like the Shrine Exhibition Hall. We played together professionally for five years.

After at stint at the Dick Grove School of Music I joined an eight piece cover band playing popular dance music. We toured Western Canada for six months, riding in a converted city bus and taking turns driving a large panel truck with our equipment. When I returned I met a talented female singer who also played flute. We formed a pop/rock quintet and played professionally in the LA area for several years.

I’ve continued to take lessons along the way and have taught trumpet, piano and guitar to both young people and adults. I believe my rich musical journey and my experiences both teaching and performing can help you to achieve your musical goals!

*** Lesson Details ***
Listening to music is fun. Playing music is fun. Learning to play a musical instrument should be just as much fun. The first step toward a solid musical education is to find out what type of music the student likes and what particular musician or artist he or she enjoys. From there we can choose material that the student will have fun performing as they learn.

Each session will involve a brief review of previous material covered and a preview of ideas to work on going forward. In between, the student and I will play together and discuss how best we can each improve, and have a little fun along the way!!

I will work with a variety of methods and concepts customized to fit each student. My experience has shown me that no two students are alike, but every student will enjoy playing more, and more often, if they like the study material.

Xiaole, (Shirley) an active pianist, music teacher, and composer, is a member of MTAC-Music Teachers Association California. She has more than 30 years teaching experience and has taught piano, music theory and history from beginner to advanced levels.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are designed for individual needs and goals. Each lesson can be in flexible ways to meet the student's needs.

For example, for a beginner student, a lesson introduces the basic ideas of hand position, body posture, game-like rhythm drills and simple song-like pieces.

For elementary and intermediate students, lessons start from warm up techniques. Then they play carefully selected pieces according to the student's interest. The favorite pieces may be Christmas Carols, Kuhlau's Sonatinas and Beethoven's Fur Elise. Advanced students learn to play Mozart and Beethoven Sonatas, and Chopin's Waltz and Polonaises. Ms. Shirley has been teaching my two kids (daughter 9 & son 7) for almost 2 years now. She is very dedicated and passionate about music. She challenges my children to try hard and learn good habits. She is flexible in how she approaches both of their lessons given my daughter applies more focus and discipline to her piano than my son. She tries to find ways to keep my son encouraged and interested in learning. She is very accommodating at her home and gives my children space to do their homework. I am very pleased with Ms. Shirley's knowledge, capability and dedication to teaching piano. She is a wonderful teacher.

Ms. Shirley is fantastic. She is very understanding and a combinations. My son LOVES going to his piano lesson every week. She requires he work hard and pay attention. I have taken lessons with Xiaole for over 5 years now. She helps me to plan long term goals and to strive to play the best I can in performances and competitions. Also, she stresses forming good habits for studying for theory and practicing at home. One thing to note is that she is pretty strict. About Isaac
At the age of 26, American conductor Isaac Kramer is already establishing himself as one of the most impressive of his generation. His cross-genre musical acumen has resulted in a career that encompasses artistic activities spanning the symphonic, operatic, musical theater, and pops repertoire.

Isaac began gaining noticeable recognition in 2012, a year in which he was a Semi-Finalist for the American Prize in Conducting. That same summer he was a member of the Castleton Festival Orchestra, under the direction of the late Maestro Lorin Maazel, and was invited to join the orchestra on a groundbreaking international tour to Oman. In the year that followed, he served as Assistant Conductor to Metropolitan Opera Conductor J. David Jackson, at the Siena Music Festival in Italy. This included assisting with productions of Turn of the Screw,
Cendrillon, La Forza Del Destino, and I Vespri Siciliani, as well as several concerts.

A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, Isaac completed a Bachelor of Music in Trombone Performance, with Honors, under the tutelage of long-time Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops trombonist, Norman Bolter. During that time he simultaneously studied with BSO Associate Conductor, Marcelo Lehninger, with further mentorship from Bill Drury and Stephen Lord. His time at NEC was preceded by intensive study at the prestigious Orange County School For The Arts, where he received hands-on experience conducting his peers in the various school ensembles. During that time he also served as an apprentice to conductor Barry Silverman, who continues to serve as a mentor to this day. As a result, Isaac is regularly invited back to the school as a guest conductor and mentor to currently enrolled students.

His affinity for conducting pops repertoire was further cultivated during his time as Music Director of Celebrity Cruises, a multi-faceted role that entailed conducting and artistic planning and administration for all music programs in the Celebrity fleet, including the Theatre Orchestra.

Following in the footsteps of his icons, namely Leonard Bernstein and Gustavo Dudamel, Isaac has a passionate desire to bring music education and appreciation of the arts to all children in the belief that music can be a unifying force in the world. In 2016, Isaac co-founded the New York Conductors Symphony (NCS), in partnership with acclaimed violinist Eric Silberger. This innovative ensemble plays a pivotal role in fostering the next generation of conductors by providing them with opportunities to develop their talents in a creative environment of the highest artistic standard.

He continues to develop his unique skill set under the guidance of his current mentor, music director and conductor for broadway national tours, symphony pops guest conductor and arranger, Maestro David Andrews Rogers.

I am a clarinetist in the Artist Diploma program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music. Hello, I'm Stephanie! I teach beginning to advanced voice lessons and beginning to intermediate piano. I have students of all ages and love helping them on their musical journeys. Whether you are just starting out or want to reconnect to your musical interests, I am here to help!

I am an accomplished vocalist with experience in an array of musical genres including opera, musical theater, jazz, art songs, oratorios, masses, and cross-overs. I sing at weddings and special events throughout Southern California, serve as the soprano section leader at Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano, and am a member of several choirs and a cappella groups.

As a veteran vocal coach, I have trained singers from 5 to 60 years of age. There is always something new to be learned and I help my students discover and unlock their talent. The voice is foster
ed through the use of vocal exercises and learning proper technique. I find that beginning piano lessons are excellent for those too young to begin studying voice or those that want to supplement their vocal studies.

Stephanie is a great vocal instructor. To start, she has an amazing voice herself, and she instantly puts you at ease where you can trust her. I keep learning more and more about my voice and how to use it, and I appreciate that she customizes her teaching method to my very inquisitive learning style, explaining all the technical aspects that help me understand what I'm doing. I only have great praise for Stephanie.
