After playing French horn for 3 years, I decided to try to play Trumpet. It ended up being very natural to me and so I performed on both Trumpet and French horn in High school. I played the French horn for our Orchestra and Wind ensemble and Trumpet for our Jazz ensemble. I fell into a position when I was 15 to be a brass coach of a Montessori school and taught mostly Trumpet for the 3 years that I was there.
Today, I play the Trumpet for fun!

About Beckie
Hi!
My name is Beckie and I have played music for all of my life. I play and teach many different instruments such as the French horn, trumpet, piano, saxophone, mandolin, guitar, and voice.

In 2017, I graduated from UCLA with my Masters in Music on French horn. In 2010, I graduated from Chapman University with two degrees in music- music performance on French horn and music education.

My first job was as at a Montessori Academy elementary school, where I was the brass coach for 3 years. This is where I fell in love with teaching. I have been teaching privately for 15 years now and love the one-on-one attention that I can give the students.

I have worked with many great organizations like the Los Angeles Philharmonic and various music studios around Los Angeles.

I currently am a freelance musician, Elementary school music
teacher, brass coach for two local high schools and a private music teacher! I perform with orchestras and groups all around the Los Angeles area. I have performed in such wonderful venues as the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Sydney Opera house, in which I was able to premier a piece!

I look forward to working with you or your child in helping to start or continue a musical instrument!

*** Lesson Details ***
When I teach lessons, I like to check in with the student to see how their day was and how practicing throughout the week went. I am very patient and will teach at the student's pace. I expect the student to practice during the week, even if for just 10 minutes a day. I will always work with a student as long as it takes to have them understand what is difficult for them musically.

For music, I try to find free options but books may be a better option. When we choose a book to play out of, I like to choose a book together so that the parent and the child are happy about the selection. Books vary based on what the needs are for each student. Books are to be purchased by the parent.

I usually play my instruments with the students, but being a freelance musician, I may need to save my chops for an upcoming gig. Not always, but happens from time to time :)

I also have a 24-hour cancellation/lesson change policy. If you are late for your lesson, I will try to accommodate the time but may have students or rehearsals afterward so it will not always be a guarantee. If you are going to be late, please text me BEFORE the scheduled lesson. Lessons are to be every week as I DO NOT teach bi-weekly lessons.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lesson space is in my home w/ seating for parents and music stand for students. I also have a cat and a dog, so if you are allergic, please let me know! The dog and the cat are put away for the lessons as to not distract either one of us! They are pretty cute!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to provide the music books and their own instruments and music stand.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical genres of playing but I am able to teach all different styles of music.

Outstanding instructor! Beckie is very positive and encouraging and my son has learned so much in just a few weeks. My son looks forward to his session each week. She is also an amazing musician herself and plays her instrument side by side with my son which allows him to hear and learn the individual notes.

As an adult learner who plays multiple instruments, I’ve had every type of teacher you can imagine. It’s always a struggle to find a teacher able to work with the unique requirements of being an adult with adult obligations and time constraints.

Tom, as it turns out, is that rare teacher able to not just handle these unique requirements, but is also fantastic at finding and focusing on knowledge gaps, whether it be playing, theory, tone, or anything else I throw at him.

Prior to taking lessons with Tom, I had barely held a trumpet, and I’m progressing at a rate far faster than I had imagined I would.

So don’t bother looking elsewhere, Tom is who you need!

About Jesse
*Disclaimer*
I'm currently not taking beginner students on voice/singing, guitar, bass, drums, piano, and ukulele. I highly recommend my studio partners Melissa though. Please check out her profile:

My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Once or twice a year we'll also stage a larger event off site for more individual students and bands classes to perform.
Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Music Stands

*A P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console and Yamaha organ

*A MicroKorg Synthesizer

*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, Saxophone, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

Phil Norris has been teaching trumpet since 1983. He teaches the physical side of the trumpet as well as the musical side. The trumpet, being one of the most physically grueling instruments, demands this. He gives a customized routine for the student to do at home and he also helps with those who are having embouchure problems, whether they’ve developed a bad habit or have had to deal with braces.
On the musical side, Phil teaches jazz improv, big band lead, how to play in a rock horn section, and even classical style. Of course reading music and helping with the student’s school material is also focused on.

Phil continues to work with Alex to improve his embouchure through various lip exercises and slurs. Also, works on diaphragm strength through various exercise. Alex is one of the top trumpet players at his school as a freshman. His range and tone has dramatically improved since working with Phil. Phil is fun and engaging as well. I highly recommend Phil to anyone looking for a competent and skilled music instructor.

He is a master of appropriately challenging the student. At times he will play along with me which I find helpful. If I miss a lesson he gives me make up lessons. His rates are more than fair. I highly recommend Phil for trumpet instruction.

I will push you as hard as you want to be pushed from your lessons, and can help you become competitive in auditions for jobs, gigs, honor bands, and school. We will go over the fundamentals of playing trumpet and use exercises from various different method books. We will also go in depth into any styles that you are interested in. I will ask you to listen to recordings of great trumpet players so you can model their sound. Lessons will be rewarding and fun!

I performed in the marching band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, jazz ensembles, various trumpet ensembles, and a brass quintet. I backed up various world famous trumpet artists during the International Trumpet Guild Conference at Valley Forge in 2014 such as Bobby Shew, Randy Brecker, Tine Thing Helseth, Canadian Brass, and many others. I took lessons from Robert Skoniczin and Jean Christophe Dobrzelewski during my time at WCU.

As a performer I have played in the Los Angeles and Orange County area for the past 3 years as a member of big bands, jazz combos, and 4 piece brass ensembles. I have taught in both one on one settings as well as full ensemble classes and have seen great progress and success in my students in each. Overall my focus in teaching is on sound quality, technique, and stylistic relevance.

About John
My name is John. I am a graduate of the music performance program at The University of California at Riverside. There I studied under several talented teachers including Dr. Tim Labor and Dr. Barbara Bennett, as well as Trumpeters Don Clarke, Richard Chasin, and Joshua Welchez. Since graduating I have been engaging in some freelance work both as a one on one private instructor, as well as a technician for Azusa High School's Jazz Ensemble.

In general I have always prized the value of personal instruction. Having come from a family of primarily educators I am well aware that the value a single teacher can have on a student is immeasurable. This appreciation has only been compounded since I have begun to teach myself. Though it takes time in music, visible progress is the one of the more profound feelings of accomplishment that can be fe

Beginners are fun! For more advanced players, I specialize in teaching improvisation and soloing. Some trumpet students of mine also get into arranging and composing for orch, big band, or other brass ensembles.

Love it!

About Austin

I've been making music since I started piano lessons at 6 years old. I love teaching and have been doing so privately and in classroom settings throughout my career. My wife and are empty nesters of three children but no grandchildren yet... . Musically, I started with classical piano and progressed to jazz and pop music as a teenager. In junior high, playing trumpet in band progressed to playing bass in jazz ensemble. Finally, acoustic guitar satisfied my need for something to play songs with that was more portable than a keyboard. Initially, my desire to be a studio session musician resulted in pursuing a wide variety of musical skills, instruments, and segments of the music world. From arranging and composing for orchestra and rap albums, to audio engineering/consulting and music typesetting, my experience became very di

verse. Loving so many styles of music, I played professionally such diverse things as salsa piano, folk guitar, jazz bass, and funk drumming. I also love teaching and have developed curricula for several schools as well as guest-taught at numerous universities and conferences.

career highlights:
-international touring with multiple artists and bands, 45 countries
-record producer with 100+ projects and developed producer curriculum for audio trade school
-conference speaker and guest university instructor all over the world teaching music and creativity
-skill on multiple instruments and styles as well as extensive experience in the world of audio and teaching music theory

teaching highlights:
I traveled quite a bit as a guest teacher/speaker, so an exhaustive list is not practical. Some highlights include:

-Oral Roberts University - Tulsa (8 years in multiple roles)
-Southeastern University - Florida
-MediaTech Institute - Texas
-LPI Hernhutt - Germany (3 months)
-Created to Worship - England (2 years)
-and of course, numerous conferences, clinics, workshops all over the place

I've been asked numerous times "how many instruments do you play?" Well, I can get around on most anything. However, I don't play anything bowed (like violin or cello) nor the steel guitar. The instruments I teach are those I have the most background and have played professionally with.

Please contact me if you have any questions, I would love to talk with you!

I enjoy nurturing musical creativity in my
students.

It is Rapturous for me when a student realizes
their own musicality by going past just
playing the notes on the page, to actively
expressing the Message (which could be a
Thought, Emotion, or a Scene) that is
inherent in the piece.

In a Brass instrument lesson, I have the student play:
-A quick and effective warm-up with me.
-A quick review of their assigned
technical exercises.
-Their assigned Etude or Chart or Solo.
-A Duet with Me.

Technical aspects of Performance:
1. A mastery of ability to Sight Sing.
2. Clean Articulation.
3. A wide (and well-sounding) Range.
4. Moving between partials is Flexible.
5. A beautiful Tone.

I wish for my students to become more than
just good instrumentalists, I want for them
to always have fun with music. When a
student realizes that music can ultimately be
Emotional and Creative Outlet for them,
they will be Musicians for life!

About Scott
I am a Bass Trombonist, but teach all brass instruments. I have been teaching for 20 years. I help my students build their Tone, Technique and Articulation by teaching a simple Warm-Up routine. I have written an 8-page eBook entitled "Optimal Brass Playing" that describes ten areas of best practices in Brass playing. Each of my students receives one of these.
I also heavily emphasize instruction on Sight Reading. In fact, I have recently written a book on the subject that I will soon publish entitled "Page to Performance". As a Composer, I have also written Duet parts to all 65 Introductory Melodious Etudes that were fist compiled by Alan Raph. I use these Duets in lessons to help my students strengthen their Listening Awareness skills.
