I began teaching violin lessons privately 5 years ago and have had as many as 40 students at one time. I have had many beginner students of all ages, and welcome students of any age or level. I approach each one of my students individualistically, focusing on the kind of music that interests and excites them most, while also providing material and exercises to help strengthen the students’ musicianship and technical proficiency on the instrument. I believes in bettering my student’s abilities through encouragement and positive reinforcement, guiding them to find a love and commitment to music. I understand that above all else, music should feel fun and rewarding and serve as a way to express yourself. If you're not having fun, you're missing the point! I have taught classical music, jazz, fiddle, and pop, and have a background in the Suzuki Method.

About Livia

I am a violinist of 21 years formally trained in both classical and jazz music. I graduated from the University of Maryland in 2015, where I received my Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance, studying under performer and pedagogue Dr. James Stern (D.M.A., The Juilliard School.) Livia was my sons violin teacher for 3 years. We couldn’t have asked for a better teacher. My son started when he was in third grade with a different teacher, and it was not a good match. Livia came and met my son and they clicked right away. I asked my son (now in 7th grade) what to say in this review, he said that Livia is a great teacher, he learned a lot, and he had tons of fun. She has a laid back and patient manner. Because of her I believe he will have a lifelong love of violin. I give her my highest recommendation.

"I've taken 3 lessons with Candida and I am blown away. I started taking lessons when I was a child, but had given up the instrument going into adulthood. Candida has helped awaken a love for music that I never knew I had. We are studying technique, music theory, and learning methods which are allowing me to not only learn faster, but appreciate and understand the progress that I am making. This multiples the enjoyment that I am getting from the instrument. Candida also does a good job of motivating you and contextualizing your progress and your goals. I am very excited that I am taking lessons with her!"

He taught him not only the instrument itself but started teaching him some rhythm and music theory as well. As soon as my son matures a little more and is ready for lessons we will definitely pick Edwin!"

How to Hold a Violin Bow with Proper Grip: Step-by-Step Beginners' Guide

One of the most challenging parts of learning how to play the violin is learning how to hold a bow properly, as it can feel very unnatural for beginner and intermediate students. While it can be frustrating, learning how to hold a violin bow is extremely important--especially for those who are just starting violin lessons. With proper bow technique, you can essentially produce whatever tones, strokes, and dynamics you want. However, if you have trouble controlling the bow, you'l …
