Piano technique, practice strategies, and performance practice.

About Steven
The piano has always been my greatest passion; I have never been able to imagine life without it. I was very fortunate to have had the benefit of a great education in music starting at an early age. My goal as pianist and teacher is to pass on the wisdom of my own teachers, as well as my enthusiasm for this great instrument and the rich repertoire of music written for it.

I received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California, where I was a student of Daniel Pollack for 12 years. In order to become the best teacher possible, I minored in Music Education, gaining experience in the major theories of music pedagogy and teaching techniques. In teaching, I strive to create an optimal blend of old and new by combining the great and time-honored traditions of piano playing, as instilled in me through my pi
ano studies, with recent discoveries and advents in the field of music pedagogy.

My performing experiences have taken me across great distances in time and space, with performances in major halls across the globe, featuring music of over five centuries. I have commissioned new works and performed numerous premieres, and have also played music of the Renaissance and early Baroque on the Harpsichord. I have also accompanied singers and played chamber music extensively.

*** Lesson Details ***
Playing the piano is a journey of discovery and joy that lasts a lifetime. The rewards of playing extend far beyond the piano, bearing dividends in all areas of music, as well as outside of music. Such important basic skills as concentration, tenacity, and delaying of gratification, are promoted from the outset of piano lessons, and are readily adaptable to other fields and challenges. At the same time, students of all levels, from 6 months of lessons to several years of experience, can develop and maintain a repertoire of pieces to present to family and friends, and to play for their own gratification and self-esteem.

My guiding philosophy in teaching is that everyone can learn to play the piano with hard work and good training. Talent is neither necessary, nor sufficient in itself to produce great pianists. What will promote excellence in piano playing is a thorough and well-rounded grounding in the various aspects of music, including music theory, piano technique, music history, and repertoire-building. I teach these and many other components of music in all my lessons. I use method books with earlier level students and gradually incorporate works from the classical repertoire. I assign enjoyable, beneficial music theory projects, rhythmic exercises, and teach pieces of differing genres, styles, and demands to keep lessons varied and interesting. Several times a year, our hard work is shared with others at student recitals, where family and strangers alike join students in the joy of music and the piano.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The teacher's home studio includes a large studio space with 2 grand pianos side by side so the student learn by example where applicable. Seating is also available for family and guests. There is also a warm up studio room for students that arrive early and are waiting to start their lesson.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students will need access to a piano or keyboard for regular practicing.

*** Specialties ***
Piano technique, classical piano repertoire, music theory and aural skills, musicology, accompanying and chamber music.

Brilliant teacher, knows more about music than I'll ever know about anything, and shares exactly the right amount with me each session. He is incredibly patient, upbeat, encouraging, and helpful. When I make mistakes he's constantly patiently encouraging and helping me with various approaches to piano technique. I am a completely new student who could not read notes. Steven is sensitive to how to pace me and shows me new ways of learning that fit my personality and level. I could not imagine a better piano instructor/mentor than Steven. If you're within range of his studio and you're planning to take piano lessons at ANY level, I would strongly urge you to work with Steven. You will learn and thoroughly enjoy the experience!

I wrote a 5-star review for Art after I had only one or two lessons. After having taken 3 or 4 more, I felt the need to write another one. In his profile, he said his students advance quickly, and he backs that up ten-fold. If you are serious about learning or improving your voice, and you follow his directions, you will advance quickly and you won't even realize it is happening until you are alone and you belt something out that you didn't know you could do. When you are stuck, he knows just what to do. Bottom-line, he gets fast results! As a business executive and a veteran, that is the strongest compliment I can give.

I have been teaching piano for over 25 years. Each student is unique; so I customize the lessons and repertoire to suit each student, utilizing method books and/or different styles of music depending on the student's interest. I always include music theory, note comprehension, rhythm and practice tips!

About Amber
I am an experienced, enthusiastic music instructor, who started playing piano around 8 years of age and participated in many musical activities. I received my Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Massachusetts, majoring in Music Education (voice and piano). I have appeared around the world as a soloist singing jazz and pop, including the Blue Note, NYC, and appeared as a guest soloist at the 2000 Southern California Summer Special Olympics. I also participated in ensemble groups such as the Masterworks Chorale in NYC, and the Verdi Opera Chorus of Southern California; and currently I volunteer at the Senior Center leading/accompanying the Sing-Alongs.

Inspired by my love of music, I have been teaching piano and voice for over 25 years from NY to LA and now Orange County. In conjunction with my teaching skills, I have
excellent communication skills, patience and enthusiasm, and work well with children and all ages. I feel that music is an important part of education, and it aids in the development of cognitive and motor skills. And most of all, it is fun and rewarding, and a skill to last a lifetime!

Upon our first meeting, the instructor gave my 12 year old daughter several breathing and vocalizing exercises to do at home for additional practice. Amber also quickly identified my daughter's vocal range and guided her on how to utilize various techniques to bring out her singing voice properly, patiently explaining the why's and how's behind each technique. Amber is also able to provide criticism/correction in a warm and positive way that the student is not left feeling embarrassed nor discouraged. We are looking forward to more lessons with Ms. Amber!

I have played piano for 12 years and trombone/euphonium for 7 years. I am comfortable teaching children music in many settings. My approach to teaching is to create a situation in which the student is presented with information in such a way that is both easy-to-understand but also fun and interesting, especially for younger students. It is important to me to always gauge the student's understanding of the concept at hand and provide them with frequent opportunities to ask questions specific to their needs, so that they understand all material. Furthermore, I emphasize giving the student strategies to practice and learn on their own, so that they can also grow independently outside of the lesson time.

About Lauren
I recently graduated from Etiwanda High School on 22 May 2018 with Summa Cum Laude Honors, and will now be pursuing a Music Performance degree at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach. I passed my ABRSM Grade 8 Piano Exam with Distinction, which is the last level of exams.

I have had a beginner piano student for 3 years, as well as several trombone and euphonium students in that time. I was also the Co-Teacher for the Freshman Concert Band at my high school for 2 years, as well as a Section Leader, Brass Captain, and Leadership Coordinator.

I was a member of many gold-medalist ensembles at my school, several honor bands such as the Pasadena City College Tournament of Roses Honor Band and The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, and I also work as a piano accompanist.

Learn piano in a modern way

About Mikel
Hello there! My name is Mikel, I'm a Spanish singer-songwriter, producer, arranger, composer and a million things more that has to do with music. But that is not important right now, you are the important individual in this conversation.

I want to tell you a bit about why I'm here:I feel music everywhere, in movement, noise, people, nature, animals, silence, etc. It would be an understatement to put music into a category of comparisson with other things for me, because is basically my natural state of appreciation towards life. But, I can say something: I just want to help the world listen to that music, that is everywhere. I want the chance to help you get into the world of music, I will teach you to learn about your own musical ability and influences. I'm not going to impose a genre, style, technique to you. I want to help you disco
ver your own path and we will go on your own pace. Luis Alberto Spinetta, one of my favorite musicians, once said that we are just bridges that connect the rest of the people to music. I believe that we owe ourselfs and to music, being truth to our own being and open enough to let that magic flow through us and reach the rest of the world.

We will work not only in how to play an instrument, but music itself, theory, arranging, composing, songwriting, tricks and formulas, pop, experimental and advance harmonic techniques.

See you on our first lesson, and bring some tunes you like!
