We will work on strengthening fundamentals as well as building music theory knowledge. The focus will be classical, but can also include jazz and learning how to improvise. Each student enters with a goal, and I want to work with them to reach it.

I can't say enough good things about Robert. He has instructed my 10 year old son for a year. Robert has kept my son engaged with his instrument, and music in general, and we have seen a steady improvement in his playing. He has been kind and gentle at times, yet firm when needed. An all around excellent teacher.

Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.

An instrumentalist since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach beginning trumpet lessons.

About Thomas

Piano, woodwinds, trumpet, composition Chords, sight-reading, theory, jazz, classical, and pop No one ever regrets learning an instrument… yet many grow old wishing they had taken music lessons! A talent they’ll be able to develop their entire life, your children will thank you for giving them

The first lesson was successful. My particular background in piano is unique, and my needs are atypical as well. I thought Thomas assessed my abilities, lack of abilities, and goals well and quickly. He started me on a different perspective on looking at music (reading the staff) that seems very helpful. I'm encouraged.

"I've taken lessens with Mercedes for two years. Every time I left a lessen I had a lot of good ideas and ways to strengthen my playing. I never felt like lessens with Mercedes were a teacher to student environment. It was very chill and more like friend helping friend. That to me is the best relationship to truly learn. Mercedes helped me learn a sense of confidence that is not only used in Trumpet but in life."

"We feel lucky to find Mr. Jerry V. as our 12 year old son's trumpet teacher. His course is very well structured and planned, using classical training materials covering various basics and skills my son needs to learn and master to make step by step progresses. His teaching is efficient and effective, with beautiful demo, which is very important for his student, especially young ones. His practice assignments are also well designed and planned, with which my son has been making solid progress. He is also very easy to communicate and is nice and kind. With the well structured course, assignments, experienced and professional teaching, an excellent trumpet player himself, we are happy with Mr. Jerry V, and will keep him as long as possible."

"Ms. Laverty has been my son’s private trumpet teacher since the summer of 2012. She is patient, kind and very supportive of his efforts in playing the trumpet. In large part, she is the reason that my son enjoys playing trumpet and continues to thrive as a musician.

From the beginning she tailored her lessons to include the music that my son was interested in and also added increasingly more complex music to work on and master.

Sandra has taped him playing during lessons to show him how and where he can improve in body position, quality of sound and other nuances. She regularly uses her laptop computer to show videos of performances that support the lesson and also assigns various Internet sites to view for exposure to other musicians and styles.

Sandra regularly provides opportunities for my son to perform in public. He has performed at the annual CMEA event at San Jose State University, and other smaller events where he played solo on stage. They have both joined in at a local café for practice in improvisation, as my son loves to play jazz. This has really helped in his jazz solo opportunities at school. She has also organized a quartet of student trumpet players to work together on various music pieces and then they all performed together for family and friends. This was a unique experience for the children to practice and play together and perform as a group.

My son is also interested in basketball and baseball, and Sandra has been very flexible in scheduling lessons to accommodate my son’s athletic and school schedules. After about 6 months of lessons, she offered twice a week lessons to capitalize on my son’s enthusiasm and increase the speed of musical advancement so his confidence soared and he wanted to play more because he liked doing something he felt he was good at. He kept this schedule for about a year and then back to once a week to allow for more time for other interests.

During middle school, my son played trumpet in both the Advanced Band and also Jazz Band classes. This past summer, Sandra again offered twice weekly lessons to get ready for his high school debut. As a result, he was chosen to play first chair in the high school jazz band. He was also one of only two freshmen that were accepted into the most advanced band class (also known at Wind Ensemble) at Lincoln High School.

I recommend Sandra Laverty, without reservation, for any trumpet teaching opportunity."
