To a Musical 2018! Recital is coming! Practice, Practice, Practice! Congratulations to those who completed the 100 day challenge, WOW! I am currently full except for ONE slot Wed at 4:30, snatch it up quickly!

Goals: Since I am also a Life Coach, we really focus on how to accomplish our hopes and desires. We begin by weekly, then monthly and even a yearly goal.

Each week we also focus on something in my STUDENT PAL - mnemonic. Another is TECHNIQUE. Technique is the ability to have proper position, wrist-lifts and finger curve as well as Theoretic knowledge and application.

I started giving out lickable gold stars, you know, the old-fashioned kind? They are for those students who mark their lesson sheet and come prepared... They really seem to enjoy that, and I adore the nostalgia!

It is a great week when students are nearly
all prepared and ready for their lessons. This makes both Coach and student more effective and the time together more enjoyable.

Perhaps you are reading this with both a little excitement and a little concern. Finding the right person for your or your student can be intimidating. A short introduction follows so that you know a little about me and my philosophy which can assist you make an informed decision. If we are a good fit, lessons and learning progress more joyfully.

I have been teaching music, performing music and enjoying music since I was a tiny three-year old. My first piano lessons were at age seven. I have since taught the students of former students! How fun is that?

Music has blessed my life in countless ways and given me opportunities I'd never dreamed of. Teaching at the Young Artists Conservatory of Music; Singing in Carnegie Hall, Performing across Europe and teaching the best students for over 25 years has been a delight.

I believe strongly that those who spend their time and resources for musical education are some of the brightest and most intelligent people around. Each of my students have their own individual goals and reasons for taking music lessons, which we revisit monthly. I believe that my role is to be a support and tool for them/you to accomplish the goals set, working with music that delights and educates.

You want the best teacher, who offers information, example, practice and performance opportunities and then gets out of the way of the student's own "voice" (whether playing or singing) so that they can be free to create their own style.

*** Lesson Details ***
In our lessons, we work with a predictable schedule of balance. We have weekly exercises to make strong fingers and or voices, and technique and theory practice to hone skills that will improve our performances, whether they are for others or for our own benefit. Each student of piano can learn how to create and write their own music in time, choose their own pieces to work on, and have a say in their classical and performance goals.

We have a program of advancement, so you and your loved ones can visually see your progress and measure your skills, complete with awards and trophies.

What you learn, has everything to do with your commitment. Practice doesn't make perfect, Practice makes permanent. Only perfect practice makes perfect.

Learning the piano ought to be a JOY. I believe in playing the piano, not 'practicing' it. Enjoy what you do, and you'll do it longer and with celebration instead of duty.

Mrs. Jen has been a violin teacher for our daughter for 3.5 years. She is an extremely qualified and talented musician who deeply cares about her students and is committed to teaching. She is kind and patient, but also effective and motivating. When our 8 year old daughter learned Mrs. Jen was moving she said, "I probably will never have as neat or special of a violin teacher as Mrs. Jen"- and she's right!

First lesson was fine. We took a few minutes to find each other in a cafe setting but as it was also a meet and greet session I wasn't too concerned about time. As it turns out Beth more than made up the time. She's very pleasant and easy to speak with. We went over my goals, simple traveler type words, phrases and questions, and a work schedule to cover the next several weeks. Beth told me how she was going to approach teaching me after listening to my goals. I'm looking forward to the next session where we can focus on learning the language.

Our son had a great lesson with Clarissa and can’t wait for the next one!! Clarissa was very patient and gave Luke plenty of time to answer the questions. He stayed engaged the entire 45 minute lesson. We shortened the lesson to 30 minutes at Clarissa’s suggestion to ensure he gets the most from each lesson which I really appreciated! This has been a wonderful experience so far!

Amani is an amazing teacher! I have taken the Rosetta Stone Arabic course, but their scope with Arabic is limited to Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). Amani has helped to bring Arabic to life for me. Here is what I have discovered in the lessons I have taken so far:
- she is extremely patient
- she answers all of your questions
- she starts the lessons at your level (I am a beginner)
- she is willing to discuss any and all topics
- she is very knowledgeable in Arabic- Modern Standard Arabic or "MSA" (also known as "fus-ha" / formal Arabic) and a range of Colloquial Dialects.
(Remember that MSA is not a native tongue to any Arabic-speaking country. If your goal is to communicate with others, you will have to learn a dialect). I have asked for the translation to words in MSA and she has given me the versions in Syrian (a branch of "Levantine" Arabic which is also understood in Lebanon and Palestine ); Gulf Arabic (for those travelling to Dubai, Saudi Arabia, or Qatar); and she has also offered the translations in Egyptian Arabic which seems to be the most popular spoken dialect.

So all that to say - I am looking forward to the next lesson!!! :-)

Two things really impress me about Amani. First, I love to practice speaking, even though I know I make frequent errors. She's patient and lets me get my ideas across, without over-correcting. She engages in real conversation which is a huge confidence-booster. Second, she's knowledgeable and willing to engage in a wide range of subjects in current events and Arab culture: real, human topics. She's very open and professional and does not shy away from issues that are sometimes sensitive or controversial. I always look forward to my lessons with Amani.

I do not see teaching as simply repeating what has been already detailed in text books and lectures. Everyone’s mind is different and thus everyone has a unique perception to understanding one issue or another. Things are better illustrated with an example.

A while back, there was a television show hosted by a T.V. personality named Monty Hall. In the show, Monty presented a contestant with 3 closed doors. Behind one door was a new car. And behind each of the other two doors was a goat. The contestant had the option to choose one door so as to win the new car.

The probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 or door 3 was the same, about 33.33%. Let us say that the contestant picked door 1. Monty would then open one of the other two doors that were not chosen by the contestant. There were 3 terms in the game: 1) Monty knew what w
as behind each door; 2) Monty cannot open the door that was already chosen by the contestant; 3) Monty would only open a door that hides a goat.

Let us say Monty opened door 3 revealing a goat. Monty then asked the contestant if the contestant would like to switch to door 2 or keep his original choice of door 1. Contestants would be bewildered not knowing really what to do. Was it better to keep the originally choice or was it better to switch or it would make no difference whether to keep the original choice or switch?

Meet Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn wrote a column called “Ask Marilyn” in a newspaper called Parade. Marilyn was known for having one of the highest recorded IQ. A reader sent Marilyn a letter asking her if it was better to switch or not to switch. Marilyn stated in her column that a contestant should switch since switching doubled the contestant’s chances of winning. Many of Marilyn’s readers erupted in protest including readers with Ph.D., mathematicians, and academicians. Most people believed that the probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 was the same of 50%.

This became known as The Monty Hall Problem or The Monty Hall Paradox. Articles and books were written over this problem. Actually Marilyn was right and this was proven using computer simulation. Yet until today many people cannot understand that switching doubles the chances of winning.

At first glance this paradox might seem irrelevant to teaching. But I think it does. This paradox tutor the mind in the subject of structured thinking which is very important in learning.
