I've been teaching beginning cello for over 30 years. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play pizzicato and learn how to hold the bow. As time goes on you'll be able to read music and play simple songs. Any beginning cello book will get us started. In addition to your cello and book, you will also need rosin. As you progress, a tuner and a metronome may be helpful. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

If you are in school and are looking to get into all state and need help with school orchestra, or if you are an adult learner and just want to learn how to play, you are at the right place. I am a firm believer of having a good setup and I am excited to share it with you the secret to having good posture, having no soreness when you play, and how to have a good bow hand..etc. If you need help learning how to practice efficiently-that means practicing less but with greater outcome, you can also come to me. Playing the cello should be enjoyable and with the right method that I can provide for you, You will be able to improve tremendously.

It is my foremost belief as a teacher that my students are truly capable of anything they set their mind to. I teach with positive reinforcement and never judgement to create a warm and comfortable environment that fosters and nurtures potential! I see teaching as more than teaching a person to learn the cello, but as an opportunity to accompany students on their journey towards embracing who they are, creating meaningful art, and connecting to the world through music.

No matter the age or prior experience of the student, you can expect a heavy focus on establishing a firm foundation of cello technique. Without this foundation, the student can only progress so much. With the foundation set and solid, the possibilities are endless! I teach tension-free cello playing. There should never be pain or discomfort anywhere in the body which is why I have such a large focus on establishing proper technique.

Susan Ufford is in her 7th year of teaching private lessons, and 2nd year of teaching string orchestra. Susan has been a pianist for 18 years and a cellist for 15 years. She is currently an elementary orchestra director teaching at Dallas ISD.

After graduating high school in Taiwan, she attended Trinity University in San Antonio, where she got her Bachelor of Arts in Instrumental Music Education, as well as her Masters of Arts in Teaching. During her four undergraduate years at Trinity, she received music scholarships on both piano and cello. While at TU, she had the privilege to take cello lessons with Mr. David Mollenauer, assistant principal cellists of the San Antonio Symphony. She was principal cellists at the Trinity University Symphony Orchestra for four years and had the privilege to conduct TSO during her senior year. She taught her first year of orchestra in Maus Middle School in Frisco ISD as an assistant orchestra director.
