I come from a musical family where everyone was able to play piano at a high level and considered pursuing a career in piano for a long time. Although violin had become my primary instrument, I still perform and teach. I teach any level from beginner to advanced!
Some of the books I use - Piano lessons, Level 1 James Bastien, J. S. Bach 24 Fuges and preludes, L. Beethoven Piano Sonatas, A. Mozart Piano Sonatas.

Q&A:

Q.: Do you teach bi-weekly lessons?

A.: No, I do not give bi-weekly lessons, and require all of my students to take at least 4 lessons a month to be able to join my studio.

Q.: What happens if I miss a lesson?

A.: My studio policy is that all of my students are required to give me an at least 24-hour notice if they will be missing their lesson for any reason with the exception of illness or family emergencies. It is the student's responsibility to reschedule the lesson for the same week, or their lesson time will be charged in full. For illnesses and ...

I focus heavily on technique at first, usually for the first 2-4 months. At that point, depending on the student we work on either sight reading or improvisation.

About James

I'm currently a professor at EMMAT, a member school of the Berklee International Network. I have over a quarter-century experience teaching people of all backgrounds and styles. My education is a mix of formal and informal, and in addition, I have worked as a professional musician and singer my who

If you’re serious about learning to play piano and willing to put in the work, I honestly cannot think of a better instructor than James. His teaching methodology is creative, fun, yet challenging catapulting students to higher proficiency levels than typically possible with more traditional teaching methods. My 11 year old learning from James is quickly surpassing other kids with many more years of lessons studying other dated, traditional approaches.

James has played for some well known professional acts during his career in multiple music genres (including a presidencial election ceremony)...point being he’s been on the big stage and has reached a level most only dream about. Yet he continues to follow his true passion which is helping others learn and reach their own individual musical aspirations.

In short, James is your guy...look no further.

James has a terrific approach to teaching that my seven year old daughter responded to with enthusiasm and excitement. She learned a lot more than I thought she could in just her first lesson. We’re looking forward to next week!

For beginning piano students, I use Marilyn Lowe's Music Moves for Piano series. If a student already has purchased piano books or has piano books from an older sibling, I would not ask the student to purchase more books until we had used what they already had to its full capacity. For adults and older beginners, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.

About Ceste

I'm a passionate, motivated instructor who loves working with students of all ages. In 2003, I graduated from Bryan College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education with a vocal emphasis and in 2011, I graduated from James Madison University with a Masters of Arts degree in Music Educat

Ceste has a great ear and is willing to meet you wherever you are in your skill level. She cares about what kind of sound you dream of, identifies your natural strengths, and works those into realistic goals to work towards.

She practices using the Alexander Method. Her expertise in how the body affects the voice actually gave me a ton of useful information to successfully identify the cause of some chronic health/pain issues (although she never offers medical advice, I was able to integrate her feedback about what was affecting the quality of my voice into medical care with my Drs).

Thanks Ceste!

"You know how when you look back at your childhood and adolescence you remember a handful of teachers who really changed your life? Josh is, all on his own, at least three of them: the wildly engaging one whose enthusiasm for the material is contagious, the unfailingly patient one who gives you confidence to try something new, the endlessly creative one who can turn a spark of interest into a whole fireworks show. We often joke that we're going to make him sit down and list out all the things he knows so we can hire him to teach them, one by one, to our son. And what's crazy is that all of the magic that is Josh in person--which is really quite a lot of magic--somehow comes across in virtual lessons too. Absolutely the best music teacher we've encountered in cumulative decades of classes, and one of the best teachers, period. So yeah, he's pretty great."

"We are so thrilled that we found such an amazing piano teacher as Christina for our 12 year old son. I’ve observed Christian to be very patient and encouraging with him as he takes these beginner lessons. She has a gentle manner combined with level-appropriate expectations. Furthermore, Christina has been willing to work with us in regards to our schedule (we needed a teacher who could teach in our home) and our son just finished his fifth lesson and he loves it! Last but not least, he is excited to practice daily and looks forward to the next lesson."

"I am Mia's grandmother. She has shown an interest in piano and has just turned 10 a few days ago. She loves lessons with Hannah and has completed her fifth lesson and will continue on.
Hannah is patient and Mia enjoys learning from her. I sit nearby during her home lessons and feel the teaching technique is perfect for Mia.
I took lessons as a child and feel Mia has accomplished much in five lessons while having fun and enjoying the songs she is playing.
I would highly recommend Hannah to anyone who has an interest in learning how to play the piano.
I chose piano lessons as a Christmas gift to my granddaughter. I waited until she showed an interest in learning piano and I'm happy to have found a great teacher. Thank you TakeLessons and thank you Hannah."

Is Piano the BEST Instrument to Play? Sound Off!

We came across this interesting article from MyDreamTeacher.com and just had to share!  Here's a taste of the reasons the author thinks the piano is the best instrument out there: 1) It has more notes. The piano keyboard represents every note available on other instruments.  There is no instrument that has a note that the piano does not have.  This reason alone gives a strong case for everyone to play piano. 2) What you hit is what you get. The piano produces the most immediate results …

Franz Liszt's Piano Studio Desk & Other Ways Composers Capture Their Ideas

Franz Liszt (1811 – 1886) was a virtuoso pianist and composer, and generally recognized to be the one of the greatest of all time. To help him with his composing, Liszt had a custom desk built which had a small piano keyboard built into the middle drawer. It was built by a manufacturer called Bösendorf, and it is currently on display at the Franz Liszt Museum in Budapest. These days, many aspiring musicians have similar set ups in their compositional studios. We still use the same musi …
