2 years later and still going strong. Ian is the best."

Matthew has been a big help so far in getting me started playing the guitar. We have had 4 lessons so far, and he has taught me several chords, as well as the c major scale. He has been a big help in teaching me to play in time, as well as finger positioning on the guitar."
I've been taking lessons with Eric since about the Spring of 2013 and have made huge progress in my playing ability since.
I started learning on my own through online lessons, but decided to take lessons with a private instructor after about 5-6 months when I decided I wanted to learn to play Jazz 'proper'.
Eric explains many of the written and unwritten 'rules' of Jazz and has helped my understanding of how to play enormously. I am still at a beginner stage, but I can see myself making good progress.
I went from knowing only basic open chords and some basic jazz chord voicings to learning heaps of new scales and chords to keep me busy and learn the basic building blocks of Jazz - learning how to comp, play melodies, improvise, and learn how to build chord-melody arrangements. Eric is well versed in many types of music and he can relate what we learn to many other styles as well. We cover musical concepts by playing them, hearing how they sound, and also covering what they are theoretically. His teaching method is very comprehensive and I enjoy that.
Eric puts a lot of new information in my lap at every lesson, which I always look forward to, but he is also very patient and understanding. He knows it takes time to be able to understand and execute everything properly. He is also very supportive during the week away from our lessons. He will send you extra info when you need it and will explain anything that needs clarification via email and is usually pretty quick to respond.
We go a little off tangent every once in awhile, but it's all in good fun.
Eric's a great teacher and I look forward to continuing lessons with him in the future."

First things first: Before you can make it to rock star status, you'll need a guitar or other instrument to practice with. But what's the right model for a beginner? And how much do you really need to spend? Cardiff teacher Glenn P. tackles the common question here... So, how much should you spend on a new guitar or bass? The answer actually depends upon a few basic criteria: 1. What is your budget for a guitar? 2. What is your commitment level to learning to play? 3. Do yo …
