I've been teaching violin for 11 years and my students have gone on to play with different ensembles. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play simple songs by reading and by ear and as time goes on you'll be able to play more complex repertoire. I specialize in classical, style but I can teach you different kinds of styles, typically use the Suzuki repertoire but I use a variety of method and books. I have the following tools available for your lessons: violin, computer program, sound system, Tuner and Metronome . I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Maria
With more than 30 years of teaching experience for the cello, I have taught students of all ages, throughout California and overseas. I earned a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Cello Performance and am currently the Principal cellist for the Camellia Symphony, California. In addition, I am teaching all levels of cello and beginner violin lessons to my students in Folsom, Napa and Sacramento.

My professional performing experience began in Medellin, Colombia in 1985 with the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra where I was their Soloist beginning in 1992 and later on, as First Cello, from 1998-2002.

While in Colombia, I also performed with the Antioquia Symphonic Orchestra and the Antioquia Chamber Orchestra from 1991-1999.

I left my hometown of Medellin to come to the United States where I performed with the
Texas Christian University Orchestra in Fort Worth, Texas in 2000. Returning to Medellin, I spent the next year with the Eafit Symphonic Orchestra.

Finally, I settled in Sacramento in 2003, coming here to earn my Master's Degree in Cello Performance while performing throughout the next year with the California State University, Sacramento Symphony.

In Sacramento, I have also performed with the Sacramento Metropolitan Orchestra and with several other chamber groups.

At this time, I am teaching all levels of cello and beginner violin. My students range in age from six to seventy years and enjoy learning in a relaxing environment at their own pace.

I incorporate several different teaching styles to meet each students' individual needs and abilities.

I'm an adult with no prior music experience, however, Maria welcomed me with open arms and a great environment for learning the cello. She is very kind, extremely knowledgeable and I feel very comfortable with her. I also appreciate her music room where she teaches; it's private and allows me to concentrate without environmental/background noises since I can get easily distracted. If you are looking for a great teacher you can't go wrong with Maria!

She is an excellent instructor! I have for years been stuck in my progress and had no idea how to improve. Gaw has been patient and really helped me to get to a point where I feel confident in my skills as a singer to perform in front of others.
She’s very knowledgeable and really helps you develop your vocal technique/style.
I thought about lessons for a while, but now I only regret not starting sooner.

Have you been playing for a long time, or have you never picked up the instrument before? Whether you are a child or an adult, I have a style of teaching for you. I've been playing since I was a child and have a special place in my heart for the is instrument. I actually began learning from a fiddle player and trained classically later. If you want to learn how to succeed in playing this rewarding and satisfying style, this is the place for you.
Are wondering why every time you hit a certain note, it squeaks, or crunches, or sounds glassy? Or maybe you can't quite read the notes. Perhaps you are no stranger to the instrument, but need improvement of musicianship, expression, etc. Let me help you master the skills you're trying to achieve. With my help, you can make breathtaking music!

About Kimberly
I grew up in a household of 9 where music was always center stage. We would sing as a family in different venues and were often called the VonTrapp family. I have enjoyed singing and performing from a young age. I began studying flute at age 8, after scoring highest in the harmony listening exam and began formal violin lessons at the age of 9. I studied all genres including, fiddle, classical, musical theater and 20th century. I have continued to study violin since then and have performed in many orchestras and small groups, such as Honor Orchestra, the Paradise Symphony, the Yuba College Orchestra, Yuba-Sutter Oratorio Society Orchestra and more. I have been concert master and first stand in many of these. I have also soloed in many and have been the first violinist in quartets for countless weddings and other events. I have also played
in numerous pit orchestras for musicals.
I have been in choirs and soloing since I can remember. I have performed and soloed in choirs such as the Yuba-Sutter Oratorio Society, CSUS Chamber Choir, the CSUS Women's Choir and more. I have toured to Victoria, Montreal, Ottowa, Oregon and Washington. I have also been in opera productions such as The Magic Flute, Peleas and Melisande and Die Fledermaus (The Bat) with CSUS Opera. I am a recent recipient of the Saturday Club Scholarship, a prestigious award, and have won many competitions (some repeatedly) both vocally and with violin, such as the Tri-County Competition, Young Artist Competitions, and the California Soloist and Ensemble Competitions. Additionally, I have performed musical theater repertoire and have performed as lead in musicals such as Beauty and the Beast and Into the Woods. I have also soloed repeatedly with the Yuba College jazz band and at churches all around.
I have earned my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from CSU Sacramento. I have my Associates Degrees in both Music and Early Childhood Education from Yuba College. Additionally, I have obtained my certificate of completion of training from Music Together, an organization which trains teachers to teach Basic Music Competence (both in tonality and meter), and am currently teaching this curriculum.
I have been teaching music privately for over ten years to all ages, genders and abilities. Additionally, I have taught ages 0-5 years in a preschool setting for 7 years and am extremely familiar with developmentally appropriate practices for both preschool and school age, as I am a site supervisor at a child development center with a preschool and after school program. I have had many adult students as well and encourage adults to enrich their lives with music at any age! Additionally, I have experience teaching parent child classes and am familiar with how to teach to the particular needs of each family and student.
I'm extremely excited and looking forward to growing as a professional, both teaching and performing, in both the areas of violin and voice and to be instrumental in your musical growth too; I can't wait to share my passion with you and to ignite your passion for music too!

*** Lesson Details ***
I have been teaching since 2002 and have loved every minute of it! I teach all ages. I tailor my style of teaching to each student's goals and to what works for you. If you want to learn Taylor Swift music, I won't be giving you arias. On the other hand, if you wish to study classically, I have repertoire appropriate for you. I teach fiddle, classical, orchestral, 20th century and more for violin students and have experience with jazz, classical, musical theater, pop, religious, spiritual, choral, 20th century and more vocally.
For violin students, I use the Suzuki method as a pushing off point, a tried and true method used in many countries across the world, though I have other repertoire including fiddle, orchestra, small ensemble, solo, concertos, Christmas, and more. For vocalist, I start with the book, Adventures in Singing. I also have warm ups and exercises to keep you vocally healthy. I will teach you anything you want to learn! I also teach how to read music, theory and harmony, depending on your interest and tailored to your current skill level.
I am encouraging and knowledgeable. I will meet you at your current level, be that beginner, intermediate, or advanced. My students can look forward to being encouraged and growing through their time with me. I don't have preset ideas about where you should be in 3-6 months, nor do I have a one size fits all teaching style. Instead, I will work with you individually so that you will become the best musician you can be, meet your goals, and increase your enjoyment and appreciation for music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in open space, upright piano, digital piano, music stands, metronome, violins available for rent, music, staff paper and computer

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect my students to provide the instrument with all of it's accessories (ie shoulder rest, rosin, bow and case) along with the appropriate level Suzuki book. I have instruments available for rent. My voice students should bring their own music also. I have a piano in my studio along with music stands. Of course, every student must have a pencil and come ready to have fun learning! :)

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki, solfege, art songs and arias, reading music, fiddle, classical, healthy vocal technique and musical theater. I am very good at working with any age.

Kim can teach you or your child, no matter where you are!

I was 30 when I decided to rekindle my love for the violin. I hadn’t played since before YouTube was invented, and I was skeptical about learning violin online. By the first lesson, Kim had already corrected poor habits I didn’t know I had, just after hearing me play a few scales. She adjusted her teaching style to my personality so seamlessly that I felt I was just getting pointers from a dear violinist friend whose advice is always spot-on. Weekly practice never felt like work, because Kim tailored my assignments to my goals. Before I knew it, I was playing complex concertos I could never do in high school. I started out being able to play just one major scale. Within 10 months, I was in Suzuki Book 4!
I can’t say enough about Kim’s expert teaching skills. During a sight-reading of a very difficult piece, I became so frustrated that I wanted to stop the lesson and try again later. Kim encouraged me until I had gotten all the way through, and pointed out what I could learn from my performance. When I had time to calm down, I realized that Kim can do this for any student; adults, children, and adults whose inner child throws a tantrum when they’re frustrated by a musical challenge. :-)

Teachers like Kim are rare, and worth their weight in gold. I learned so much more than violin fundamentals through my lessons with her. I’m convinced Kim can teach anyone, of any age—even through an online platform.

violin is one of the most tricky instrument ever. When you listen to it, it is amazing, when you start to learn it, you feel horrible. you cannot wait to ask your children or yourself to quit ASAP. trust me, once you pass the pivotal point, you will love it, never feel tired of holding it, never feel crazy of its creepy sound!

First, I need to talk to my students about their goals. Not only for the adult, teacher also need to know what kids want to know about music. They are interested in it sometimes, they just don't know. Second, I will let them know, interests is just the first step. If you want to learn, you have to pay! Pay your patient, and your endeavor. I will teach in some specific ways to motive students to approach the goals. for example: listen, singing, playing, reading is the process to make the students catch the goal faster without lost their interests! So involve more activities in the lessons is very important! Also, serious technique practice is necessary. As I mentioned before, not only interests, if you want to learn , you have to pay. Once you catch your goal, you will feel happy that the teacher has been pushed you for some boring finger exercise.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I do have a grand piano at home. For violin students, they should have their own instrument.

It's been 3/4 year since we've been with her, and she is absolutely awesome! She totally earned my daughter's respect. Meeting a right teacher is so important because it took some time to correct the bad habit she aquired and continued that her previous teacher let go. Ms. Kan is absolutely one of the best teacher we had so far!

Kan seemed very qualified and the first lesson or so went well with the exception of hearing her child cry on and off throughout the lesson and make an appearance on camera as well. We tried to be understanding. Unfortunately we learned she has quite a temper. Our Internet went down and caused problems in our Skype connection. We tried to contact her and Skype said she was unavailable. It took some time to unravel it. When we finally got back in touch with Kan 16 minutes after the lesson started, instead of listening and understanding that we had technical problems, she yelled at us and kept brandishing her phone at the camera to "prove" that she was ready for the lesson. She barely let us get a word in. She very firmly told us we would be paying for the lesson and continued to hold her phone up to the camera. We wanted to just continue the lesson in it's shortened form, but she refused to put her phone down and kept talking over us. Our goal was to remedy the situation; after this, we wanted nothing further to do with Kan. She upset our daughter and that's the end of that. Be warned.

I began teaching violin and viola in 2012. I have enjoyed working with students of varying ages, who thus far have ranged from age 3.5 to adult. Each one of my students is unique, and I appreciate that in each lesson, I can focus on the needs and strengths of that individual student. On my own, I particularly enjoy playing with other people. I often play harmony parts with my students when they have mastered their current piece both to help verify their competency and to acclimate them to playing with others. I currently play viola with the San Francisco Civic Symphony and sight-read chamber music with fellow musicians. I have greatly enjoyed both teaching music and learning about music pedagogy through the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

Watch for me also on the TakeLessons teacher blog. A few of my articles include:

First lesson was fine. We took a few minutes to find each other in a cafe setting but as it was also a meet and greet session I wasn't too concerned about time. As it turns out Beth more than made up the time. She's very pleasant and easy to speak with. We went over my goals, simple traveler type words, phrases and questions, and a work schedule to cover the next several weeks. Beth told me how she was going to approach teaching me after listening to my goals. I'm looking forward to the next session where we can focus on learning the language.

First of all, I will discuss with their parents and students what is their goal for learning violin. My teaching style depends on what goal the student wants to achieve.

I had built my own violin studio in Taiwan since I was 18 years old. Many of my students won the prize in the competition in Taiwan. Furthermore, I have had the opportunity to lead a sectional violin in a junior high school’s string orchestra for a year. Beyond that, I also gave a coaching to for string quartet to my students regularly. Through these experiences, I have been fortunate enough to educate a diverse group of elementary and middle school students.

I am passionate about teaching violin and really enjoy how students inspire me in life. I always focus on expanding children’s interests by improvising music, playing or recomposing pop music, incorporating music activities such as concerts, performances, competitions to encourage and build children’s confidence. By utilizing these methods, I am able to ...

I may not have been playing or teaching the violin for nearly as long as the cello, but that doesn't mean that I am any less enthusiastic about it. As with my cello teaching, I am always learning new methods and ways of teaching to facilitate the student's learning process. While I am equipped to teach violin only to beginners at the moment (meaning the student has only been playing for 3 or less years), as I learn and work on my own violin playing, higher and more complicated levels will become available. As with my cello teaching, I plan on obtaining my Suzuki Certification in the very near future.

About Amanda
Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. First off, I'd like to talk about my travel radius. If you you would like to know if your location is within my travel radius, I only need your zipcode to estimate your location. So please don't hesitate to ask! Now for formalities. My name is Amanda S. and I have been playing the cello for 14 years and the violin for 3 years. I have been teaching private cello lessons for 4 years, and music classes with my violin for almost one year now. I love students who ask questions and are engaged and eager to learn. You can ask me anything about music during our lessons and if I don't have an answer for you in that moment, I will find an answer for you before our next lesson should you chose to continue them. In my studio, my students and I work very hard every lesson. Effort is strongly e
ncouraged and rewarded. Every student's age and abilities are taken into account and with my experience, I know how hard to push and when to relax. So don't worry, it's not cello/violin boot camp! If you have any further questions about what you can expect, please ask!

Ms. Shafer is a wonderful instructor. She understands how to work with children. Allowing them to be silly and giggly for a bit and then gentle redirecting them to focus on the music and instruction. She also meets them at their level and is very engaging. My child enjoys learning from her.

Hello. I am a thirteen year old girl who attends middle school. I have been taking cello lessons from Ms. Shafer for five and one-half months. Her instruction has helped me to gain helpful study habits that help me practice to become a better cellist. With her way of teaching, songs that I have previously thought impossible to play become possible.

Amanda is a fantastic cello instructor. Despite her hectic schedule, she's very involved and obviously caring of her students. Shes very helpful and understanding of each of her students' situation.
Interesting enough, we've had 2 of the same private lessond instructors and yet she still provides me with new techniques and helpful suggestions.

10/10 would reccomend.
