My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Once or twice a year we'll also stage a larger event off site for more individual students and bands classes to perform.
Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Music Stands

*A P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console and Yamaha organ

*A MicroKorg Synthesizer

*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, Saxophone, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

About Kathryn
I just added Mondays to my SF calendar to open up more availability - Monday lessons are available starting October 15th, 2018.

My Tuesdays and Wednesdays are pretty booked but I do have a waiting list started. Feel free to reach out if you would like to be added to the waiting list.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From the moment Kat was tall enough to reach the keys she made so much noise on her family's piano that they eventually bought a kid-sized version to keep in her room. When Kat turned 7 her family got her the best present ever; lessons with an amazing piano teacher.
Kat also began to study flute several years later and soon realized that music was the life for her. She majored in music in both high school and college graduating with a BA in Music from St. Norbert College in DePere, Wisconsin.
Kat has a very divers
e career in music. From a full-time private music teacher to the Musical Director of a Burning Man Opera, to the Section Leader for a Youth Orchestra, to the keyboard player in a Theatrical Heavy Metal Band, Kat is always thrilled to stretch her wings and try new things.
*** Lesson Details ***
I teach Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays in San Francisco.
I have a ridiculous sense of humor. I believe in stickers, high fives, and celebratory fist-bumps. And yes, that goes for the adults as well.
I always looked forward to my lessons because they were so fun, even if I knew I hadn't practiced enough. That is exactly what I try to create for every student I work with.
Besides the humor, I customize lesson plans to fit you. Not just the types of music you want to learn, but HOW you learn. My number one goal is that you completely understand what you are learning. I don't mind in the least if I need to explain a new lesson 10 different ways-€“ we will work together until you really get it! Understanding what you're doing makes it so much more fun.
Have a favorite song stuck in your head, but the sheet music is still too hard? No problem. I'm happy to write the song out for you at your own level. I want you to enjoy yourself, and if that means Lady GaGa then I'm happy to oblige. I will probably stick Mozart in when you're not looking just to make sure you're learning a lot of different things, but that's what teachers are for.
Of course we cover fundamentals and start with the basics. I typically incorporate music theory and ear training with your lessons as well . In 6 months on piano, with regular practice, you will be comfortably reading music and playing songs you enjoy with both hands AT THE SAME TIME! (Gasp!) On flute in 6 months you will also be able to read music comfortably, will no longer feel like you are about to drop the flute at any given moment, will have a solid range of notes and have a solid feeling of control while you play.
I look forward to sharing music with you!
*** Studio Equipment ***
piano, seating for parents
*** Specialties ***
My number one goal is comprehension -to make sure that all of my students really understand what they are doing. I work very hard to ensure an atmosphere where all of my students - no matter their age - can feel comfortable to say "I don't understand".
I've spent a lot of time thinking about what I want from lessons again, so when I read Kat's bio she felt like a good fit for me. We had an excellent first lesson! I appreciate that Kat seeks to understand the cognitive learning process of each of her students and spends time listening and asking questions in order to understand where her students are in terms of their skills and knowledge of what they're interested in. I felt she tailored the lesson for me and for my individual needs. Equally important, I really like her and we had fun. I'm excited to be taking lessons again.
I will teach you the skills you need to play the music you want to play.
Beginner to intermediate, or coming back to play.
Rock, Pop, Broadway, Blues, Jazz and Country.
Testimonials
We have a perfect teacher. Our daughter, 17, was frustrated with traditional lessons, requirements for practice, learning notes before playing, etc. We found a wonderful teacher who just met her where she was, has worked with her and within a month she was playing songs, learning to read music, and practicing of her own accord with no nagging. She loves music lessons now. Her piano playing is coming along beautifully. Best of all she is enjoying music. He also teaches voice, and she is working on that as well as piano with him. He's a pianist, composer, songwriter, music director. He will come to your house, and I couldn't recommend him more highly.
Tom is a great instructor! He is very patient and engaging during lessons. Tom also plays various brass instruments as accompaniment during the lesson to demonstrate how notes should sound. Overall, I think the personalized attention and support Tom provides helps support my son’s playing. My son says he enjoys his lessons because it's fun, and he feels that he is continually improving his technique and gaining more confidence in his trumpet playing.
In just a few lesson I feel I have made great progress while enjoying myself immensely. Tom's lessons are a delightful experience; I alway leave them feeling very energized and refreshed. My favorite part of our lesson is when we play duets together. Tom plays his Euphonium, I love the sound of that instrument, while I play trumpet; these duets sound just heavenly. I do not have enough good things to say about this instructor, other than I am simply delighted with the experience. Thank you Tom. -s.
I am both patient and enthusiastic as a teacher. I love music, and enjoy the opportunity to share my love of the piano with my students. Once I have determined the student's level, I find music that will help them progress towards a higher level.
About Lella
I studied Musicology and Piano Performance at the Shandong Normal University School of Music, where I graduated with my BA in 2005. I taught music and established a band at a property management institute while a student there, and established my own practice after I graduated. I came to the United States in 2013, where I have continued to play piano and have joined a local band. I am happy to continue sharing my love of music with my students here.
I began tutoring Mandarin in January 2015. As a native speaker, I can guide you to a very high level, and help you learn to speak with a proper Chinese accent.
Please note: Online classes are available for Mandarin Chinese only. Piano lessons are only available in person.
We just had our first lesson and we hit a few bumps but my daughter has never had music instruction before so we're giving it another go next week to see if things go more smoothly. 3 stars above says meets expectations, and though it didn't, I just hesitate to give someone 2 stars based on one lesson.
Here are some details from class:
My daughter (K) just turned 5 but is pretty mature for her age and has expressed an interest in learning the piano so we signed up for individual lessons with Lella. At the start of class I mentioned again (I had noted it at booking time as well) that K has had zero experience with music instruction. Immediately Lella sat with K on the piano bench and started explaining treble clef sign, bass clef sign and what hands they relate to. Lella also has a thick accent as I was trying to follow along with her explanations with a little difficulty. She even asked if K speaks Chinese and I said "no" so she said "you're Indian right?" My daughter would look around from time to time while Lella was explaining at which point Lella would just keep seeing "Pay attention sweetie!" Then she asked my daughter to write the numbers 1-5 in a book and when she said she didn't know how to write the number 2, Lella laughed and said "you know, but you forgot right" so I spoke up and explained "no she has not been taught to write her numbers yet, but she can read/recognize them" to which Lella seemed very surprised, so I felt the need to say, "she's still in preschool. But if you write them she'll be able to tell you what they are." So then Lella switched to counts, explaining about the values of different notes. She asked my daughter if she had questions, to which my daughter said "I think I understand what you're saying, if it's just a circle that means four, but if it's a circle with a line..." And before she could finish her thought Lella said "no that's not a line, it's a stem". At another point when Lella asked if she had any questions, my daughter slowly said "yes... what's velour?" And when Lella looked confused I had to step in and explain that Lella was saying "value", the amount of counts for a note. By the end of the half hour lesson, Lella had reached her explanation of middle C, which she described to my daughter saying "this is middle C because it's in the middle, there are two black keys, then on the left is C. Can you find another one?" When K didn't respond right away, she repeated herself, and again another time. So I said "she really has had no previous music experience, I think you need to even explain to her that those are called keys, like there are black keys, white keys..." And Lella just looked at me confused.
At the end of the lesson I agreed to buy the theory book so we can practice that at home, and Lella asked if I can sit in on the next lesson to help explain things to my daughter, because she "doesn't really focus". I agreed to sit in on the lesson, for my own benefit so I can help her with HW since I also don't have music experience. But I also mentioned to Lella that her accent is quite strong and I think my daughter was having trouble understanding her, and Lella seemed surprised by that comment.
I don't know... it says on Lella's profile that she has worked with young kids but I can't really see how the class was any different from how she would teach me, an adult with no prior music experience.
Oh! I forgot to mention something so basic - when we met Lella she thought I was someone else so I re-introduced myself and introduced my daughter. Then as we were saying goodbye at the end of class I realized Lella had never introduced herself to my daughter, so I asked "oh, what would you like K to call you, Ms. Li, or Lella? Ms. Lella?" She said Lella was fine so I turned to K and said "Tell Lella bye K." It just hit me, I mean that's something about creating a relationship with a young student. Speaking to them directly, making that connection. Lella was really smiley which gave the impression she was friendly but she never really made a connection with K who is the student, not me.
Hi! First, I will ask for your experience not only with piano but with music. We will work on posture, playing technique and reading. Because of my tutelage, my default material for beginners is Suzuki Book 1 which you can either purchase yourself or I can bring one for you. If you have other music material that you would like to work on, I am happy to use that instead. Then I will assign you homework which you will need to practice on your own in preparation for then next lesson.
About Charlotte
Hi! I am currently a student at University of San Francisco studying Biology and Neuroscience. I began studying piano when I was 4 through the Suzuki method and started teaching when I moved to San Francisco to start school. I am dedicated to the Suzuki method and believe in it. When I take on a student, I want them to accomplish their goals but will require that they practice and prepare for each lesson. With practicing done, we can work on and hone your skill together and (I hope) develop a love for music and an instrument I hold very dear.
About Roxanna
Hi there,
Just a few words to introduce my experience, approach and my work ethic .
I have a Bachelors Degree in Music, majoring in piano and voice and an established private teaching practice and teaching studio. I have extensive experience in private piano and vocal tuition and teaching general musicianship, music theory, singing and instrumental teaching in schools, as well as 10 years experience as a vocal performer in the UK.
I am committed to working hard for my students and remaining responsive to their musical tastes and interests. I also work to find out what learning style and senses my students learn most easily with (visual,
kinesthetic, auditory etc.) and adapt my teaching plan to meet the individual needs of each student. I use a variety of creative musical activities and techniques to engender an engaged learn
ing in each of my students.
In teaching piano, I teach rigorous foundational piano technique from the beginning, along with general musicianship. I like to incorporate teaching of general musical concepts, while encouraging creativity and imagination with the younger pupils that I teach. I also incorporate adaptations of popular music that children like to hear and play and try to stay responsive to the musical tastes of the student- while maintaining high standards in technique from beginners to advanced. I also address postural awareness and incorporate elements of the alexander technique into my teaching.
For those interested in singing lessons, I will first and foremost find out what kind of sound you personally wish to produce. Styles vary greatly across different genres. I will then help to diagnose your voice type and what difficulties you may be encountering and which may be preventing you from creating the sound you are aiming for.
I then show you ways in which the voice can be strengthened and balanced across the whole range and help my students achieve a healthy mix of head and chest resonance. This is achieved through exercises and vocal cues, enabling you to recognize the sensations that lead to good use of the voice.
The first beginner lessons focus on getting comfortable with the piano keys and understanding the relationship with notes. I like to use known melodies for children so they can distinguish early if something does not sound right. This also helps putting together notes on paper and getting into reading music for more advanced lessons.
About Matthew
I am currently in Graduate school pursuing an MFA in Electronic Music and received my dual degree BM from Berklee College of Music in Composition and Electronic Production and Design.
I am an alto/tenor saxophonist and clarinetist, performing in symphonic wind ensembles, orchestras, and musical theatre pit ensembles. I also sing in concert choirs as a baritone/bass, and have played lead and supportive roles on stage in musical theatre shows.
As a composer I write choral, chamber, musical theatre and electroacoustic music. My other works include sonic installation pieces that encompass recording, sampling, mixing, surround sound, and production. I have also written music and created sound effects for several video games and trailers.
I can teach composition, orchestration, and basics in mixing, production, and sound design. In in
strumental studies I teach classical, contemporary, or musical theatre pit orchestra, and musical theatre training for voice and/or acting.
Want to play your favorite songs? Ever wonder how people can play a song just by ear? I am an experienced piano teacher of 10 years with the patience of a therapist specializing in teaching beginner and intermediate levels of piano. Lessons emphasize learning to read and play music accurately and fluently, mastering the fundamentals of theory, developing musicality and composition, and improvisation. You'll be able to pick up and play almost any song and we'll work together to develop your own compositions. Message me and see if we're a good match!
About Paul
I am a skilled pianist with over 18 years of practice and 10 years of teaching. I have played for several weddings and am the music coordinator at my local church. I studied music theory and composition at Yale University and casually compose music on the side.
I teach piano students of all different ages from beginner to intermediate levels. As a therapist and social worker, I also work on empowering you to become the musician you want to be. We'll work on reading and playing music fluently and accurately, developing technique so that more songs are accessible to you, learning the basics of music theory, and building musicality so that you can eventually pick up and play songs by ear.
Many of my students have gone on to play at their respective churches and play at weddings, with the youngest having played at his first gig a
t age eleven. My personal passion is contemporary music, with some of my favorite pieces to play being covers of popular songs, video games, and anime themes. I love to teach and look forward to helping you become a better musician.
Paul is a meticulous and loving teacher. He has a great deal of patience and knowledge. He helped my son when he was 9, learned about chords and musicality. There was some emphasis on music theory and he helped my son understand how a song worked as opposed to how to play a song. In addition, Paul is really good with kids. I would highly recommend him for anyone wanting to understand music and play piano.
