I'm a casual, easy-going, caring person, and I enjoy establishing a unique working relationship with each student.
I have been teaching flute for about twenty years.
In teaching I employ a personal, individual, flexible approach, to give my students each what benefits him/her the most. I emphasize proper technique, beauty of tone, musical interpretation, and enjoyment. Music theory is intertwined with the instruction. And we play lots of duets!
I also play the piano, thus sometimes accompany my flute students.

About Diane

I have been playing the flute since fifth grade, a long time! I have taught flute privately for about twenty years. My second degree is an AA in Music from Grossmont College, near San Diego, CA. As a flutist I have been a member of both the La Jolla Civic Orchestra and the Grossmont Symphony Orche

Classical approach to produce leaders in the orchestras and bands.
I've been teaching flute for 20 years and my students have gone on to the State level Band Auditions and won multiple times. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to make a decent sound, play scales, arpeggios and simple tunes, and as time goes on you'll be able to play popular tunes solo and with accompaniment of piano or band. I specialize in classical, jazz and klezmer style, typically use best published books, and have the renovated, quiet and spacious studio, music stands, audio equipment. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Dimitry

Excellent instructor!
Shao F.
Our 12-year old son has been learning clarinet from Mr. Dimitry for about a year now and we highly recommend him to prospective students for his deep music knowledge, rich clarinet performance experience and above all, just being a great clarinet teacher.

In a year's time with Mr. Dimitry, our son's progress has been very impressive. After our son started lessons with Mr. Dimitry, it quickly became apparent that Mr. Dimitry is a very experienced teacher for young musicians. He engages our son effectively to keep him interested in music and clarinet while at the same time sets high expectations for him. Our son always looks forward to clarinet lessons and also is motivated to practice pieces at home.

Mr. Dimitry not only teaches sound clarinet skills, but also emphasizes the importance of playing music the right way, that is to tell stories and express feelings through music rather than to play music like a technician. Although it is difficult for a young musician to fully appreciate this concept, it does go a long way in preparing him to become a really good musician in the long run.

Mr. Dimitry is very polite, pleasant and professional. We recommend him without any reservation.
Julia J.
My 7 year old son has been taking recorder lessons from Dimitry for almost 1 year now. Dimitry is very patient, encouraging, and enganging - considering that my son is on the younger side. Dimitry provides music instruction that is appropriate age and level wise, so my son feels accomplished and challenged at the same time.
We plan to continue with Dimitry and hopefully advance to the clarinet once his fingers can cover the clarinet holes and he has learned more music theory. My son looks forward to his music lessons. We are very pleased with his musical instruction.

"I have studied in the past with tow other flute teachers that I liked quite well so I was doubtful about finding another teacher that I would like as well. But, right from the start, Sue proved herself a very likable teacher and taught me some things that was hugely helpful rught away.

I am really excited about my flute lessons once again, thanks to Sue. Clearly she is an excellent teacher."

"I took lessons with Frannie for more than ten years, starting at age 4 in an introduction to music class at the Brooklyn Music School. Through her I found not just a great love for music but a lens through which I discovered and learned about the world. With Frannie, once a week for nearly my entire childhood, I would learn to practice and work at a piece or phrase, or to interpret and have and opinion on music I played, or to play like I mean every note, and so on endlessly. Those skills were some of the earliest and most important lessons I had about how to live and enjoy my life, and art, and how to work hard, and care about what I do for my own sake and no one else's. And I don't believe just any teacher could have done that for me. Since moving on I have often felt a different excitement and deep understanding of music than many of the peers I met who have spent far more time than me studying music.

I'm still a musician. I graduated recently from Bard College with a degree in music and have since played onstage in a very successful off-broadway musical. I've played in many orchestras including with graduate & conservatory students at Bard, with the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra, and at LaGuardia High School (formerly Music & Art). I have moved on to other instruments, and forms of music, but I credit Frances not just for showing me how much I love music but for teaching me in many ways how to enjoy and get what I want from life. I can't recommend her enough."

"I am a lifelong musician (sax) who wanted to learn to play the flute and began by taking lessons from Gretchen. She is a terrific, experienced teacher and performer. She is an incredible musician and has a wide range of students ranging from young children to senior citizens (me as well as others) with a wide span of ability, skills and knowledge …beginners (me again) to very accomplished, experienced musicians. Gretchen is very adaptable and can effectively teach at all levels. She connects with her students and establishes excellent relationships with all. She is relaxed but focused, very positive and complimentary but can be gently critical when necessary. She’s cheerful, patient, optimistic and enthusiastic. Her lessons never get boring but are fun and fresh as she varies the focus of them, teaching basics, technical aspects and musical interpretation. She is great at managing any frustrations a student might experience and always celebrates their accomplishments and successes. And one of my favorite things is that somehow she always makes me feel good about my playing as we finish our lessons wether they be on-line or in person. Never boring…always encouraging…Gretchen is a great teacher. I’m lucky I found her."
