My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Once or twice a year we'll also stage a larger event off site for more individual students and bands classes to perform.
Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Music Stands

*A P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console and Yamaha organ

*A MicroKorg Synthesizer

*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, Saxophone, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

I can help beginners get started or coach advanced students who are preparing for auditions.

About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

*** Specialties ***
music, band, orchestra, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, violin, viola, cello, string bass, piano, Percussion

My son was very nervous about his first online lesson. His instructor had him start right in on the lesson, which helped my son quickly get over his nerves. By the end of the lesson, he was all smiles and feeling very confident about his ability to play a very hard piece for his solo contest. He is looking forward to his next lesson.

I have been playing horn for 20 years and graduated with my Masters from CalArts where I studied horn with Robin Graham and Daniel Grabois in New York before that. I am equally at home in jazz/rock/pop in addition to Classical playing. Before moving to LA four years ago I toured the east coast playing with NYC band Horse's Mouth and was the Principle Hornist in the Sage City Symphony in Vermont.

Depending on each student's goals/needs, we will focus on Classical horn technique, jazz/pop/rock horn, improvisation, orchestra/chamber/solo repertoire, and/or electronic processing on the horn.

Books used: Standard of Excellence (beginner), Essential Elements (beginner), Yamaha (beginner), Kopprasch (intermediate/advanced), Maxime-Alphonse (advanced), Verne Reynolds (advanced)

About John
I've been playing music for over twenty years as a brass player, pianist, guitarist, composer, and electronic musician. I've studied and performed across the country—starting in Seattle, then New York and the northeast, and finally here in Los Angeles.

As a performer, I have trained and play extensively on the French horn, piano, and guitar. I perform in a variety of styles—from classical to jazz, pop/rock styles, and modern and experimental music.

As a composer and sound designer, I work in a variety of settings, from composing for orchestra, string quartet, percussion, and groups of all shapes and sizes, to designing sound for theater and film.

I earned my Bachelor's degree at Bennington College in Vermont and my Master's degree at CalArts. I play all around LA as a freelance orchestral musician, in my brass quartet, a studio h
ornist (recorded on will.i.am's last album, The Grasshopper Lies Heavy, and with Horse's Mouth, to name a few), and in various other groups. I have taught at Bennington College, Summer Sonatina Piano School, Sage City Symphony's Young Composers Project, CalArts, Barnsdall Park's Junior Art Center, and Santa Monica Music Center. I have been teaching privately since high school and love working with students to meet their individual goals in music.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide my own instrument for demonstration and group playing when applicable. I provide sheet music and method books for use in lessons or temporary loan. I expect students to have their own instrument and music stand for use during lessons. If using electric guitar, they should have their own amplifier. In theory or songwriting lessons, they should have their own staff paper. I ask students to purchase their own method books and music when needed.

I miss Amber's piano lessons, which I discontinued only because our schedules no longer meshed. She made learning fun, gave me helpful memory tricks, and accommodated my needs as a beginning student, even though I am an adult. I was satisfied with my progress and long to take more lessons. Being able to play even simple pieces gave me great joy and added another dimension to my life. She has my recommendation.

Make the french horn sing as we work on your all-region material, your college audition work, or your festival music. We will also work on tone development, range, and finger technique.

About Matthew
Hi, I am Matt. I am a band director in the Fort Smith, AR area. I am in my 7th year teaching band and love every minute of it. I have recently decided to return to teaching private lessons, and would love to help you with your auditions, festival music, AP music theory exams, or just learn some skills on becoming a better musician. Outside of the audition music, we continually work tone production, range, and confidence on any wind instrument. In college I had a small guitar studio as well. Some of those guitar students have gone on to study at the collegiate level and gig around town today! I have taught beginning band for 4 years now on all wind instruments including percussion. I have a firm grasp to provide solid fundamentals to start your musical journey and get you off to a great start. Feel free to ask me any questions about lesson
s.

June 2012 - June 2015 I was the head band director of Waldron High School in Waldron, AR. We won several awards through our marching and concert band program. I also ran after school lessons in which many students made our region honor band.

June 2015 - Present
I am currently the head director at Trinity Junior High in Fort Smith. I run a 7-9 band program that includes both marching and concert band seasons. Our student involvement is quite high as our band program serves about 50% of our total student population (about 90 kids served daily on all wind instruments). My band here has received many superior ratings, and many students make our region honor group, and go on to excel in high school band programs in our area.

The concept is simple: empowerment to generate mastery on your instrument. I like to work with you at your level, from beginner and up. My goal is to not only help you understand the mechanics of the instrument, but to empower you to create as limitlessly as possible on it. I will be working with you on things such as rhythm, ear training, embouchre development, breath control, sight reading, understanding musical notation and terminology and beyond through a few of my own techniques.

I have found the best approach to doing this is by selecting music that you like to listen to and play, as it is much more fun to practice something that you enjoy rather than doing busywork to build skill.

About Tyler
Hi, I'm Tyler! Born and raised in Roswell, New Mexico, I am the son of a band director. That being said, I have literally been involved in music since I was an infant! I played trombone, bass trombone, and bass guitar all the way through high school, and went to New Mexico State University where I received my Bachelor's Degree in Music, and then moved to Los Angeles, California, where I received my Master's Degree at California Institute of the Arts, where I also learned to play the other brass instruments, as well as composition and arranging.

Throughout my career, I've been able to do some great things with music. I have been able to travel Europe and work with one of the world's finest brass instrument manufacturers, Michael Rath, I have toured Colombia with my University's Wind Ensemble, I've recorded at Capitol Records in Hollywo
od, and have written and premiered numerous works for orchestra and rock ensemble, trombone choirs, and even a duet for quarter tone trumpets!

I have an affinity for modern and avant garde music, but am well-versed in all genres and musical styles! I also like to play in and record rock and roll bands, I've amassed a quite a few years of recording experience as well. From gypsy bands to thrash metal groups, I've recorded a wide array of music.

I also taught in the classroom from grades k-12 for a few years before following my true passion of teaching privately. I love to reach you at your own level and work to grow with you from there.

My goal is simple: I simply want you to come to love music as much as I do, if not more! I strive to give you the tools to become a successful musician in your own right, and I work to keep my lessons fun and engaging.

I feel like I learned a lot in an hour and he really helped me find an anchor point that I can go back to if I am stuck on a note. I realized that he went over every proven method that I learned throughout my experiences from elementary school to highschool and then added on to them by explaining how these methods help. He even showed me methods usually taught to college musicians.

The reason I always believed in private lessons is because no matter how few or how many you take, the learning process gets expedited immensely.

I definitely would recommend this teacher for learning a brass instrument.

I have been teaching for over 5 years and love working with horn players of all levels. I realize that each student is unique and always approach individual lessons with my student's particular goals in mind. I have a basic curriculum that I use in order to build a solid musical foundation for my students, but I am open to working on whatever kind of music or repertoire that they may enjoy. I love being able to expand my students' knowledge and appreciation of the world of music. It is always exciting to me when a student achieves a goal they habe set or learns a new skill that helps them in their musical expression.

About Rachel
I am a freelance horn player with a passion for teaching both horn and piano. I have a Bachelor's of Music from The University of Arizona and a Master's of Music from California State University Long Beach.

I have been teaching privately and in group settings for over 5 years and really enjoy getting to pass on the knowledge and musicianship that I have received from my teachers on to the next generation.

I have been teaching French Horn lessons for seven years now and love it! I have Bachelor of Music degrees in French Horn Performance and Music Education from the University of Michigan, and am currently in the second of my Master of Music degree at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. I have taught sectionals and masterclasses at many different types of schools as well as private lessons, and I was also a middle school band director before beginning my graduate program last year. I cater the way I teach to every individual student’s needs and goals and love working with people to help them learn more about music. Along with learning the French Horn, I am able to teach music reading as well as theory, and sight-reading skills. I emphasize posture, breathing, and self-care as part of the musical learning process. I look forward to meeting you!!

About Anna
Hello! I am a French Horn player and teacher originally from Pennsylvania. I received my Bachelor of Music degrees in French Horn Performance and Music Education from the University of Michigan. I then taught middle school band for a year before beginning my Master of Music Performance degree at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where am I currently enrolled.

I have taught a wide variety of students from age 9-74 of all proficiency levels. I have always maintained a large private, but I also taught sectionals at several high school around Ann Arbor, MI including Belleville, Plymouth-Canton, Saline, and Ypsilanti, as well as coached the Michigan Youth Band and Orchestra and Detroit Youth Symphony Orchestra horn sections on the weekends.

I have performed with and/or held positions with many groups includ
ing the Los Angeles Sinfonietta, the Rochester Symphony, the Debut Chamber Orchestra, the Jackson Symphony, the Santa Monica Symphony, the Adrian Symphony, and the Bellflower Symphony. Last year, I was fortunate enough to perform with Carla Morrison on her Amor Supremo tour. I am heard on the soundtrack of the movie “Diamond Street” (2018), folk singer May Erlewine’s latest album, Mother Lion (2017), and also was a part of the Grammy-nominated recording project for Darius Milhaud’s Orestian Trilogy.

I am a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, the professional women’s fraternity, the National Association for Music Educators, the National Honors Society, and the Tri-M Music Honors Society. I have put on several fundraiser recitals, most recently last December in State College, Pennsylvania where I raised several hundred dollars for single women in need of financial and emotional support.

I would love to work with you, and help you learn more about music!
