About Fernando
Hello there! My name is Fernando, and I bring lots of profession playing and teaching experience to the table. I am an active musician in several local bands of various styles and genres, including jazz bands, Latin jazz bands, sax quartets, church groups, and musicals. I have played across southern California, several other states including Nevada (Reno Jazz Festival), Portugal, and Mexico.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education, from CSUF. I also hold a valid California Teaching Credential, which I completed through CSUF. I also hold an Associate of Arts degree in Music from Fullerton College. I am also currently working on my Master's Degree in Music Conducting.

I am the Instrumental and Choral Music Teacher at Buena Park Jr. High School, in the city of Buena Park, where I teach band, orchestra, percussion
, and choir.

I have also taught woodwinds for various high schools across southern California, as well as a marching/visual coach for marching bands.

I front and lead my own Christian Contemporary Band. We've recorded two albums, of which I have composed the original music/lyrics, and produced both albums. We are currently working on our third album.

I can teach everything from jazz, to classical, rock, blues, Latin genres (salsa, merengue, bolero, mambo, etc.), and even contemporary Christian music in both English and Spanish.

I mix all of these experiences and knowledge into a big melting pot, and apply it very efficiently and wisely so that my students can positively benefit from a wonderful and exciting real-world musical journey!

*** Lesson Details ***
I base my lessons around the student's needs for musical growth, and their own likes and dislikes. If there is something specific that the student wants to learn, as far as a style/genre or piece of music, I foster that and I help encourage musical growth and enjoyment around that.
I am constantly encouraging my students to listen to as much music as possible, or better yet, to watch and listen to as much live music as possible. I strongly believe that this nurtures musical growth and serves as a role model.
I am very patient and laid back, but I do expect the student to have fun while staying constant with individual practice. There is no substitution for perseverance, consistency, and hard work, but it doesn't mean that we will not have fun while we make music!

*** Studio Equipment ***
An upright Yamaha acoustic piano is available, along with a Korg and Kurzweil digital keyboards, music stands, computer music software for studying repertoire (music), a large collection/library of books containing scales, exercises, music, etc. I also can make copies or print something for you if necessary. A sound system is available for listening to something is necessary. Flute, saxophone, and clarinet students must provide their own instrument, but I can point you in the right direction in terms of acquiring an instrument either for purchase or rental from a local music retail store.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students must provide their own instrument, except piano if student comes to my home for lessons. Student must also provide books (as assigned), and metronome for practicing at home. I can carry with me things such as: saxophone, clarinet, flute, a portable music stand, metronome/tunes, pencil, paper, and any other book(s) or materials as needed.

Jill Zor has been teaching music privately for over 15 years. Some of her students have won concerto competitions and music awards, music scholarships and participate in local youth orchestras. She teaches violin, viola, and piano.

Jill graduated with her Bachelor's of Music Degree in Performance Violin and Viola from the Cole Conservatory of Music at the California State University, Long Beach as a music scholarship student and on honor roll. She also studied piano at university and privately and studied jazz im
prov on violin and jazz theory at Saddleback College. Jill had private violin lessons with 12 different teachers and has been playing the violin for almost 25 years.

Jill has performed at the Segerstrom Concert Hall, Walt Disney concert Hall and Soka Performing Arts Center.

Jill also attended the Montecito Summer Music Festival and Soka's Chamber Arts Festival to study and perform string quartets and piano quintets.

Jill also is classically trained and performed professionally with the Dana Point Symphony, Montage Civic Orchestra, Brentwood/Westwood Symphony, Laguna Niguel Presbyterian Church orchestra, Vanguard Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Irvine. She also worked as a violinist for Irvine Valley College.

She performs classical, pop music, and jazz and plays reggae music, top hits, movie music, and rock for professional violin events as a solist and with a violin and cello duo.

Jill is patient and has a variety of students and able to adjust to each student's personality and needs.

Jill has performed as a solo violinist at the Orange County Fair in 2007 and 2008 with a Bluegrass band and was a concerto competition winner in 2004 performing Haydn's Violin Concerto No. 2 with the South Orange County Chamber Orchestra as a soloist.

Method books used:

Piano students learn from the Faber & Faber books, classical piano collection books, Bastien method books, Snell, Hanon exercises, and scale books by Bastien.

Violin and viola students use Suzuki method books along with reading music and playing all standard violin and viola literature outside of the Suzuki method. Students learn vibrato and shifting to other positions and learn from etude exercise books, scale studies using Carl Flesch books or Essentials for Strings books, and Sassmanshaus Early Start on violin, a fun method book for young violin students.

Etude books used: Wolfahrt, Kreutzer, Rode, Dont, Fiorillo, Gavines, and exercises from Schradiek and Sevcik. Composers and literature taught: concertos by Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Hoffmeister, Stamitz, Mendelssohn, Wieniawski, and Kabalevsky to name a few. Bach Sonatas and Partitas and Bach cello suites for viola. Sonatas by Beethoven, LeClair, Vivaldi, Frank, Brahms, and more! Jill can also teach pop, fiddle, and has studied jazz improv and jazz theory.

Private violin students can participate in the Certificate of Merit program testing in Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach.

Students also learn to read music (Sight reading) and learn rhythm.

2 optional recitals per year for students.

Jill can help students with orchestra auditions for local youth orchestras.

She has helped students get into All State and All Southern Youth Orchestras, join youth orchestras that summer tour Europe, helped students with Certificate of Merit, and auditions and acceptance into the Orange County High School of the Arts and college auditions.

She has taught at various music studios and coached music at high schools and middle schools in orange county.

A Note From Francesca:

My official bio is listed below, but perhaps more important than the things I have done are the things that I am doing. I am now approaching my 15th year of teaching. I love to teach! I carry a minimum of 30 students, but have carried more then 80 at one time, and have never once complained. My waiting list cycles based on my performance schedule and recording schedule. If you don't see a time that works for you, feel free to reach out and see if we can find something that works, as an artist, my schedule can be quite full but also quite flexible. I love my students, I get to do what I love all day and I am sure it shows. I have a blast discovering new ways to experience music with "my kids." I call all of my students kids even though most of my studio consists of young adults. I try to have a young air in my classes at all times as it just makes the process so much more fun for everyone.

I've seen it all in through years: kids, adults, beginners and advanced students. I am personally very interested in being the most versatile musician possible and I love being able to share my knowledge with my students. We can study anything and everything from Classical Guitar to Electric Guitar Shredding; from Opera to Kelly Clarkson; from Tchaikovsky to Little Richard! I love getting students to dabble in little bits of all genres, often getting even the most skeptical student singing and playing comfortably in a matter of just a few weeks. My students will be able to read music for their favorite tunes and understand how to improvise from the start. Once you come in, you'll be hooked. You will have fun because I am having fun!

I encourage all of my students to share their favorite music with me. It affords me the opportunity to learn more about what they desire to learn and what types of music they enjoy. We will learn with your music often. After all, isn't that why you are coming to see me? I will introduce you to new sounds and styles, but will foster your love for music, and do my best to never force my music on students. I feel I learn as much from my students when I truly listen to them and their music as they do from me.

On site lessons are available for artists recording demos, rehearsing bands and setting up their own studios.

On a side note, I love seeing students at my shows! I am a full time musician and can be seen playing with my band, in my own solo project and in various choral settings. Check out my website and see what I do outside of the classroom. My students get a kick out of the idea that they can buy a CD with their teachers face on it, and to be honest, so do I. Many of my students have their own music out on iTunes and YouTube. Many more can be seen performing around town in solo projects and professional ensembles.

I feel obligated to share my joys and experiences-

Not many people have been blessed to sing alongside as many renowned musicians as I have - I've been lucky to be welcomed in both the commercial and classical worlds and they have both afforded me venues to use my voice and express the most vital corners of my soul. To find your purpose through art is one of the greatest gifts you can receive. And to be able to do that in front of thousands of music lovers live or over the airwaves is a surreal experience.

It'€™s funny, my classical cronies are impressed to hear my stories of packed rock gigs at the House Blues and national touring festivals like Warped Tour and my rock buddies ask to hear my stories of Disney Hall performances with the LA Phil. To be honest, Iâ'm impressed to be there too. Sometimes, I look around and think, how did I get here? How did I get lucky enough to live the dream, to find a home in music?

I've been luckier than most. I've had GREAT mentors who have always pushed me forward and shared their wisdom freely with me. Part of the classical musician's central goal is to educate. Francesca is fantastic!! By the end of our first lesson I already had a basic grasp on so many elements and was able to work my way through a couple songs! I didn’t expect that at all. Francesca is patient and intuitive, meaning that she seems to understand just what you need in a lesson and leads you right to it. I am looking forward to learning so much more!!

Xiaole, (Shirley) an active pianist, music teacher, and composer, is a member of MTAC-Music Teachers Association California. A member of Pi Kappa Lambda Honor Society, she holds a PhD in Music with many awards for academic excellence from the University of Hawaii. She has more than 30 years teaching experience and has taught piano, music theory and history from beginner to advanced levels.

She studied at Shanghai Conservatory of Music and at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, where she polished her artistic spectrum in piano, musicology, and composition. Her teaching uses various sources, including Western classical repertoire, folk, popular music, world music, and Chinese music. *** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are designed for individual needs and goals. Each lesson can be in flexible ways to meet the student's needs.

For example, for a beginner student, a lesson introduces the basic ideas of hand position, body posture, game-like rhythm drills and simple song-like pieces.

For elementary and intermediate students, lessons start from warm up techniques. Then they play carefully selected pieces according to the student's interest. The favorite pieces may be Christmas Carols, Kuhlau's Sonatinas and Beethoven's Fur Elise. Advanced students learn to play Mozart and Beethoven Sonatas, and Chopin's Waltz and Polonaises. Some students learn to compose their music while applying music theory elements.
Some students like to learn pieces for their school events or community events (church hymns) or download pieces from internet. The teacher is willing to help students play many pieces to enrich their music life.

Ms. Shirley has been teaching my two kids (daughter 9 & son 7) for almost 2 years now. She is very dedicated and passionate about music. She challenges my children to try hard and learn good habits. She is flexible in how she approaches both of their lessons given my daughter applies more focus and discipline to her piano than my son. She tries to find ways to keep my son encouraged and interested in learning. She is very accommodating at her home and gives my children space to do their homework. I am very pleased with Ms. Shirley's knowledge, capability and dedication to teaching piano. She is a wonderful teacher.

Ms. Shirley is fantastic. She is very understanding and a combinations. My son LOVES going to his piano lesson every week. She requires he work hard and pay attention. She really works hard to find good things he does and really reinforces the positive. She is always accommodating to schedule changes as well. We love having her as a teacher.

I have taken lessons with Xiaole for over 5 years now. She helps me to plan long term goals and to strive to play the best I can in performances and competitions. Also, she stresses forming good habits for studying for theory and practicing at home. One thing to note is that she is pretty strict. Overall, I would recommend Xiaole to anyone looking for a productive teacher.

I studied Music Theory extensively through the graduate level at university, so I am happy to help students either taking private lessons, studying music theory in school, or just want to get started learning how music functions. I am able to apply this knowledge to specifically to violin, viola, bass, cello, piano, and voice.

Lessons with me...

I'm passionate about music and its many benefits, both academically, emotionally, and physically. I love to share my joy with my students in a fun, collaborative way that is professional and enjoyable. The pace is determined by the goals of the student, and materials are tailor-made to suit your preferences. Classical instruction is essential for proper technique, but branching out to Celtic fiddle or movie soundtracks is a definite option!

I recommend weekly lessons, and a minimum daily practice plan is required. Younger students should do 30-minute lessons, but around 10-years old, I require 45-60 minute lessons. Serious students preferred.

My Linh is a 22 year old Music Major at Cal State Fullerton. She is a full time student pursuing her Bachelor's Degree in Pipe Organ Performance. She has been playing piano since she was nine, and has been teaching since 2013. She comes from a large family and loves working with children.

My Linh currently sings in the Women's Choir at Cal State Fullerton and plays organ for St. Patrick Catholic Church in Carlsbad.

With most of my music students, we focus on several key areas to ensure success of overall technique and knowledge: WARM-UPs, SCALES, MUSIC THEORY, SIGHT-READING, and PREPARED SONGS. I tailor my approach and style to each student. Although I'm very detail-oriented with lessons and followup, I'm constantly in search of finding FUN ways to make sure the student is enjoying the journey. I also prefer to work on a song that the STUDENT wants to learn. It's music, and it should be fun!

Junewon has been performing very actively nationally and internationally. He was a finalist of Wilson Center Guitar Competition in 2016. As a leader of ‘June Trio’, awarded Research Enhancement Funds from Michigan State University, he performed in Bucharest, Romania with an invitation for a semi-finalist of International Bucharest Jazz Competition 2015. In 2014, he also played at National Academy For the Performing Arts in Trinidad and Tobago.
While he was pursuing his Master of Music Degree in Jazz Studies at Michigan State University, he served as a Teaching Assistant, and he was a member of Bebop-Spartan, the Jazz Orchestra I, directed by Rodney Whitaker. He played and recorded worldly renowned jazz musicians, such as Joe Hunt, Christian McBride, Jeff Hamilton, Antonio Hart, Jon Faddis, Mark Turner, Ben Street, and Peter Bernstein to
name a few.
Ever since he started to form his own group to play for the public, trio has been his most favorite ensemble. He played with his trio many times at different venue in Boston, while he was attending Berklee College of Music. Also he was a featured jazz artist at Club Bohemia, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
As a sideman, he played and recorded many times in Boston, Lansing as well as South Korea. When MSU Spartan Jazz Trombone Group was a winner of ITA, Winding Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competition in 2014 he was the rhythm section.
Junewon is not only fascinated by jazz guitar playing but also jazz harmony, arranging, and composing. “Isn’t It Love”, one of his composition has been released by recording of New York City based jazz guitarist, Peter Bernstein in 2012.
Currently, he plays guitar with Shekinah Worship Band every Sunday at Sa-Rang Comunity Church in Anaheim, CA, while he is working on his debut album by composing, arranging, and rehearsing with his trio.
