About Christoffer

*** NEW POLICIES ***
I'm currently only taking students that can commit to weekly lessons. I no longer allow 24-hr cancellations, which is a policy Takelessons promotes, but I don't find it useful for the teacher or the student. If you'll be out of town, I allow 4 cancellations per year. I also take off these dates: July 4, Thanksgiving/Black Friday, and December 24 - January 1. If you need to reschedule for another reason, I will try to find another time during that week for your lesson, but if it's an exceptionally busy week I may not be able to find a time-slot. You will still be obligated to pay for the lesson.

*** Bio ***
I have an MFA in Music Composition and Piano Performance from California Institute of the Arts and
a BA in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara. I began piano at the age of 7 and composition at age 15. Teaching has always been important to me. I started providing lessons in high school and learned that giving musical knowledge is just as important as acquiring the skills it takes to be a musician. Studying with me will help you become a well-rounded musician with the ability to play the type of music you want to play.

Constantly composing, film scoring, and performing, I'm a very active musician that works with classical musicians, rock musicians, and everything in between. I teach a variety of instruments and will cater lessons to your styles and interests. I'm also a recording artist and work with music software such as Ableton Live, Native Instruments, and Sibelius. I would love to teach you how to compose and record your own music in whichever genre you prefer.

*** Lesson Details ***
Many of my students have studied music in the past, but weren't able to keep the passion. I pride myself as a very enthusiastic teacher that works hard at making lessons fun and interesting for any age and background. All of my students (from 3 years old to 60 years old) enjoy music and practice very hard. You will be provided with a solid foundation in theory, aural skills, technique, and creativity, giving you the ability to carve your own path in music. You will learn the correct way to play your instrument and develop the intuition to command it expressively.

I've been studying ukulele with Chris for a year and a half now. I went from absolutely no background in music to really being able to play the instrument pretty quickly. Chris has the patience of Job and a real ability to explain music and playing technique in a way that is incredibly easy to understand. I learn something new every week and he can teach as quickly or as slowly as I want to learn that week. If he can teach me to play, he can teach you to play!

Starting off Diatonically we will move through the classical and modern structures of music all the way through jazz and rock music providing a comprehensive and well rounded understanding of our art form.

About Azuri
Learning is one of my main pursuits. My name is Azuri and I have studied music for over a decade and have my degree in guitar performance from musicians institute. I've had the gift of studying many artistic crafts and spend my time today trying to further my own study, while sharing what I've learned with my students.

Art is one of the most important tools we have as a culture and contains in it a shared history, tradition and the keys to future ones. Whether it be through the primal qualities of music or the impulses of dance, the records of drawing or descriptions of writing, these are the tools for our expression. I have had the great fortune to study, in many different settings, a small piece of these traditions and sharing them is paramount in respect to receiving them. I love sharing knowledge and I hope to elevate yours as a st
udent.

Teaching Philosophy -

My teaching philosophy is built on well rounded communication, explanation and examples. So, that a student can truly understand and learn a topic, surrounded in a very humorous, light and supportive environment.
Along with being provided good information, a student learns better and feels more motivated to learn when there is a balance of positive support and confidence building accompanied by constructive criticism and examples/information that can help a student assess what ever walls they may be meeting in their musical growth.

I understand that all students/artists have different goals they wish to achieve. So it is very important to me to accommodate each individuals needs and wants to help them grow in the fields they wish too; However, In that I have played music for a long time, I understand there are certain things that a student may not have been exposed to yet; It is important that while focusing on a students artistic goals they respect and are open to the suggestion and guidance of their teacher.

I truly believe music has an amazing influence on the world and has the ability to change peoples way of thinking. Therefore, I try and keep an open awareness to all music, so that I can understand all different musical languages utilized to communicate to people, and I don't believe I will ever know them all. I hold it to attention to influence my students somewhat similarly so that they can shape the landscape of how we communicate musically in the future.

I also try and be very patient with my students. Knowing that when I feel rushed, it makes information more difficult to comprehend, remember and allocate. I love watching the gears run in my students head, so I try and provide information that pushes a student but is within their abilities.

HUMOR is very important. I like to break people out of their shell by telling a joke and hopefully getting one back, so they feel more comfortable and free. One of a Artists worst enemies are nerves. Keeping things light-hearted and maybe even a little small talk can be very helpful to a students development and growth on a topic. After all, Art is meant to be fun and we should enjoy every moment of it, in fact we should enjoy every moment in life period.

I understand music requires focus and discipline and I have certain expectation of a student to understand that and practice. You can't buy chops, you can't buy music theory etc. you can get help but eventually your the one who must understand it and play it.

I am here to help you. Based on what I know and what I have extensively studied, I will do all that I can to help you achieve your musical goals. I am here to answer your questions and help you grow. I love teaching because I love sharing knowledge; As long as your seek it, it is here for you. Otherwise, I'd still love to hear some jokes.

I'm very disciplined but am also very light hearted. It's important for me to assess things seriously, so that one can understand a topic or piece of information.

I generate my lessons based on the individuals needs and therefore draw from various curriculums, sources and examples, such as : MI curriculum for ear training, Theory, Single string Technique, Reading, Rhythm guitar, Ted Greenes Chord Chemistry, Berklee Guitar Method, as well as The Real Book, other artist books(Eric Clapton, etc.) The Guitar Players Hand Book, Bach pieces and self developed curriculums, relative to the topic at hand and students personal goals, amongst many others.

-Beginning students within three months of consistent lessons should have the ability to solo and playing chords to songs that they are interested in and songs provided in the lesson along with a basic understanding of the major scale and its relationship to all of the diatonic music.

-intermediate students should have an elevated understanding of scale and chord patters along with the theory that explains modal relationships and use of these concepts.

-Advanced students should learn all of diatonic scale shapes and modes assuming they don't already know them in which case their specifically situation will be assessed

-Professional students I expect to have specific questions therefore where they grow should be largely subjective.

Overall, in a short amount of time on a scale of 1 - 10 I expect to in three months at-least elevate a students musical abilities one full point if not more.

Music theory can be extremely intimidating, but it doesn't have to be! We'll take the time to learn how melodies are constructed, why certain scales sound great over a chord change and other don't, and countless other subjects that will take your musical abilities to a whole new level you didn't think possible.

About Jonah
If you're going to hire a guitar teacher, your lessons should be something you look forward to every week. The majority of instructors use a one-size-fits-all approach, and as a result, their students can quickly become frustrated and lose interest. I've always found this unfortunate because playing the guitar can be such an incredibly enjoyable and rewarding experience.

With each one of my students, I take into account how much time they are willing to practice, what playing styles interest them, and what teaching approach works best. I then come up with a lesson plan that is specifically catered to their needs.

It's official. Best instructor ever. Today was the end of my initial prepaid classes. I have already set up for another month. Jihye teaches at my pace. Is still very patient and reviews sections until I "get it". Sections that I get quickly, she moves on and then ties everything together.
She has a wonderful personality and literally makes learning the Korean language fun. She has me read, write, speak and laugh all while teaching. She always greets my family members if they happen walk by in the background.
I am making progress and look forward to my classes. Another plus is that she uses a textbook. So even though this is a holiday break, I can peek to future lessons and continue to practice.
A+++ to Jihye.

Ms. Shirley has been teaching my two kids (daughter 9 & son 7) for almost 2 years now. She is very dedicated and passionate about music. She challenges my children to try hard and learn good habits. She is flexible in how she approaches both of their lessons given my daughter applies more focus and discipline to her piano than my son. She tries to find ways to keep my son encouraged and interested in learning. She is very accommodating at her home and gives my children space to do their homework. I've studied piano and other instruments for 30 years, have been teaching music for 20, and have been a full time professional musician and music teacher for 11 years.

As a musician who was raised on classical piano but has also spent his life playing in bands, jamming, and composing in several genres, I believe that a well-rounded musical education is not only practical, but that it brings out the most enjoyment in music.

I also believe in teaching students whatever they love whether it's classical, rock, pop, jazz, world music, or a mix of everything! The more they love it, the more they will practice, and in turn the more they will love how they have improved - a circle of awesomeness!

As a professional musician, I play over 130 shows a year throughout North America as lead singer-guitarist for Celtic Rock group The Whiskeydicks, a
s the touring pianist for classical crossover group Vivace, as a solo singer-guitarist-pianist, and as the lead singer-guitarist-pianist-composer for my own symphonic-rock-fusion group, The Living. I've also toured extensively in Europe as keyboardist and backing vocalist for singer-songwriter Melanie Dekker.

My compositions have been performed by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, The Plastic Acid Orchestra, Turning Point Ensemble, Ad Mare Wind Quintet, Vivace, The Living, The Whiskeydicks and cellist-singer-songwriter Cris Derksen.

I have a B.Mus in Piano and Music Composition from The University of British Columbia. I'm an IVA Certified Level I Voice Instructor and have studied Vocals with John Henny, Jeffrey Skouson, Guy Babusek, and Spencer Welch; piano with Terence Dawson, David Vandereyk, and Ross Taggart; composition with Dorothy Chang, Keith Hamel, and Armanini; drums with Jay Deachman and Morgan Childs; bass with David Spidel; and accordion with Jelena Milojevic.

I've just moved to LA from Vancouver where I had about 40 students, so this is the time to sign up as I have room for new students for the first time in years!

A gifted musician and teacher, Mike makes learning to play the guitar (or piano) a fun journey. His enthusiasm is infectious, and his knowledge of multiple instruments and musical genres makes him a well-rounded instructor who can adapt to each child's interests and goals. I have been amazed at the progress my son has made this year on the guitar. He was even inspired to start vocal lessons half way through the year.

Mike Bell is an excellent musician and a great music teacher across numerous instruments. He has the ability to get kids motivated to practice and to have fun playing the music they enjoy. We especially love the concerts where all the students get to perform in front of an audience at a real live venue rather than a stuffy recital hall. Mike is definitely the coolest music teacher in town!

Great teacher. He was my music theory tutor, and I was able to skip past two college theory courses within about a week of hour-long tutoring sessions.

From my experience, he works with what you have: he finds your strengths and helps you to learn based on how he believes you'll best receive new information or inspiration. He is able to communicate concepts in many different ways, and always makes sure you understand. He is not long-winded, but communicates the necessary information in a way that is straight-to-the-point, and does not waste time giving his students "busy work," but instead gives them exercises that are directly or indirectly helpful every time. He is a patient teacher, and does not make you feel like you will be left behind. He passionate about teaching and his students, and he does a great job at teaching.
