About Lily
I am a fashion designer/instructor and former social worker. I am very patient with students and passionate about sewing. I get excited watching students build skills gradually from basic through advanced level techniques.
Also, I am one of the few teachers in the country who teaches the exclusive "Freehand" sewing, which is sewing without ready-made (commercial) pattern, like our grandparents did.
As a social worker, I taught participants in a homeless shelter, how to make various items geared towards independent living. For 9years now, I've been teaching at a fabric store in East Harlem where patrons sign up for group sewing lessons as well as private lessons. I teach garment construction, alterations, home decor, and various sewing projects.

I took painting lessons about 10 years ago and haven’t done anything since. I brought a 1/2 finished painting. Maggie was great helping me set up and seeing where I was and what I remembered. Then showed me some techniques to help get me going. I’m looking forward to our next lesson.

How Long Have I Been Sewing?

I have been sewing for 40 plus years. I started sewing in my home economics class in junior high school. At the time I didn't know how valuable it would be for me to have the background of knowing how to sew by the rules. In my sewing class I learned all the basics of sewing, things like grain lines, pattern layout and cutting, reading a pattern guide sheet, pressing, parts of a sewing machine, how to thread a sewing machine etc... I can't stress how important it was to have a real person teaching me the basic of sewing. From the basic fundamental instructions I received in that class I was able to sew just about anything, of course I continued to gain as much knowledge about sewing as I could and as of today I'm still learning new sewing techniques that are definitely enhancing my basic sewing skills.
