I took Spanish classes with Marta. She didn't show up for the 5th lesson and after my polite inquiry she sent an email suggesting I should look for a different teacher and cancelled the remaining lesson. This was a very disappointing turn of events for me after having had 4 good lessons with her. While I understand that life can get in the way and priorities can shift, I would at least have expected an explanation.

Marta is a great instructor. She has helped my daughter expand her Spanish vocabulary immensely. She is professional and incorporates "fun" with learning. I would recommend her to other parents who have children that need tutoring.

I have been helping others learn math for four years now, and I enjoy watching it click for others just as much as I enjoyed it when math first began to make sense to me. From experience, I know that mathematics can be very easy, or seemingly impossible to learn depending on how the information and concepts are presented. Whether you need help with fractions, factoring polynomials, trigonometric identities, solving triple integrals or anything in between, I can break everything down to first principles, and help you attain that deep understanding of the concepts that will get you that A on your next test.

About Colin
Hello there! My name is Colin, and I have four years of experience tutoring math and science. I am a PhD candidate in the UC Berkeley-UC San Fransisco joint bioengineering program. My strong background in STEM qualifies me to tutor math and science up through lower-division college courses. Aside from my academic qualifications, I believe that it is my genuine passion for math and science that makes me an effective tutor for students of all backgrounds.

As a tutor, my goal is not to impress students with how much I know. Rather, my goal is to show my students how easily math and science concepts can come to them when they are presented the material in a straightforward way. The late physicist, Richard Feynman, posited that the ability to explain complicated ideas in a simple manner is the true mark of understanding. I agree with this
assertion, and I make it my goal each tutoring session to explain even the most complex phenomena in a simple way, so that my student will come away from the lesson invariably understanding it. Additionally, I emphasize a strong understanding of the fundamentals, because both math and science are heavily inductive disciplines; many of the theorems and laws are founded on other, more fundamental principles. I have personally experienced the discouragement of trying to learn material that is beyond my preparedness level, and so I can empathize with students who are in that boat. Fortunately, I have learned that the remedy is always a return to, and a strengthening of the basics. That is the approach I take with students who find themselves struggling in a course.

My online teaching platform is a “black board” drawing program that my students can follow along with as I explain concepts and solve problems. I simply share my screen with them during the session, and at the end, I take a screenshot of the notes and email it to my students for their reference. I hope this brief explanation of my qualifications and teaching style has provided a clear image of what you can expect from me as your tutor. I am eager to hear from you and help you succeed in your academic goals!

Mr. Colin is an excellent tutor! He is the first tutor of many from whose teaching my AP Chemistry grades improved drastically. He is very easy going and also easy to talk to. If you don't understand something, he will try to explain it in as many ways possible; just make sure to stop and let him know that you didn't understand the concept. I am very satisfied with his teaching style and therefore plan to have more lessons with Mr. Colin in college chemistry classes. I would 100% recommend him to anyone!

Business Profile:

In a digital age, learning software usage, software programming, and mathematics have become as vital as learning reading, writing, and arithmetic. Learning IT is essential in pre-college education, college education, workplace, acquiring advancements in current job; searching for a better job; managing businesses; and managing one’s personal life. Thinking computationally is something that every well-educated person needs to know and should know. There is a great digital divider between the Knows and Know Nots. This digital divider is connected to the Haves and the Have Nots. Crossing this digital divider requires solid understanding of digital concepts. One should not only live with these concepts, but could hardly live without. Many find a lot of IT potential opportunities but not enough knowledge to benefit from t
hese opportunities.

I have helped people of all walks of life how to cross this digital divider. This includes professionals, business owners, college graduate students, college undergraduate students, high school students, and job applicants.

I manage to close the digital gab by simplifying mathematical and computer science concepts. I do not simply repeat what has been already detailed in trillions of pages of books and lectures. Everyone’s mind is different and thus everyone has a unique perception to understanding one issue or another.

I have taught programming algorithms, pseudo programming codes, programming codes in Python and other computer languages, Databases, Microsoft Office Applications (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Publisher, MS Access, MS Outlook), and other IT areas for different levels: beginning, intermediate, and advanced.

I am a programmer analyst. I have an IT sole proprietary business that deals with the design of computer software including programming analysis, databases, and data analysis. My sole proprietary business also covers software programming in computer languages that span from earlier languages such as BASIC, FORTRAN PASCAL, DBASE, COBOL to languages that continued and expanded such as C. And newer languages such as PYTHON with its extended libraries that managed to combine other tools and programming languages and became in its 3.x version an object-oriented language that runs linearly. Computer languages that include Weakly-Typed language, Strongly-Typed Language, High-Level Language, Low-Level Language, Interpreted Language, Compiled Language, General-Use Language, and Target-Use Language. My sole proprietary covers software design that combine code quality with efficient use of mathematics, logic, syntax, time, memory, and processing power. I'm an independent, MIT- and Harvard-trained tutor with a decade of experience.

About Matt
I'm a professional, independent, highly experienced private teacher. I specialize in high-level academic tutoring and rigorous test preparation for high school, college, and graduate students.

I studied math, literature, and philosophy at MIT and Harvard, and I have a decade of professional teaching, tutoring, and mentoring experience in the Boston metro area -- and around the world by Skype. I've always been interested in both the sciences and the humanities, and I love sharing my passion for ideas. On the science side, I've worked in labs at NASA, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the McGovern Insitute for Brain Research, and MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. And on the humanities side, I was an editor at a political and literary magazine for four years; I've also edited three books published by MIT
Press and co-edited a chapbook of poetry including work by the former U.S. Poet Laureate. When I'm not teaching, I'm probably reading, writing, running, or thinking about teaching.

My philosophy is simple: I teach the way I would want to be taught. No matter the subject, my goal is to help students achieve deep mastery and long-lasting understanding, not just better grades and test scores. I emphasize critical and creative thinking, never rote memorization or mechanical rule-following. I focus on big-picture ideas and precise reasoning -- not just the what or the how but the why.

My profile here at TakeLessons is new, but I have more than 60 student testimonials. I'm happy to put prospective clients in touch with former students.

"A rare gem.”
Matt is a rare gem in the tutoring world. He has an amazing style of teaching. He really goes in depth. My 11th grader son has a lot of respect for him. According to my son, "Matt is a genius". His logic and teaching style makes him stand out. Matt is not only great in mathematics, he is absolutely fantastic in english, reading, and writing. He loves to breakdown complex problems for his students to understand and also expects his students to ask him questions. Matt has helped my son in calculus, reading, and writing and my son has benefitted and enjoyed the lessons to the fullest. One thing that impressed me the most was that he does not need the answer keys to verify correct answers. He trusts his own reasoning in his explanations. But, there is one problem: once you hire him as a tutor, its hard to find another of equal caliber. Thanks to Matt, our son got into Cornell.

I never believed in tutoring, with the plethora of resources available online. But when I decided to test out of
a pre-calculus course in my sophomore year and take AP Calculus BC instead, my mother thought of finding
some help for me. After struggling for months to find a good tutor, she found Matt online, and his
biography looked impressive. In our first meet, Matt’s questions were very engaging and thought-provoking
and I realized, “This guy is a genius.”
Matt has helped me with math, reading, writing, and my college applications. He has also mentioned,
“Although I am not a physicist, I can read and explain AP Physics C if needed.” Matt is a master in logic and
his confidence is unmistakable. Matt’s lessons were always profound and enjoyable, which made me
confident with high school subjects like probability and statistics, calculus; as well as college-level courses
such as multivariate calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. Thanks to his help, I was both
accepted to Cornell University's College of Engineering and wait-listed to Harvard University!
Matt has been helping me in all aspects of academic decisions and progresses. Matt isn’t just a tutor: he is a
mentor, counselor, and guide. My mother says that Matt is smart and a great teacher in developing talent in
students.

I am a math instructor, teaching small classes as well as individual lessons. I received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at the University of Puget Sound in 2016 and am open to all ages and all levels. I would cater lessons to the student's specific goals and strive to help them better understand difficult concepts as well as build a solid foundation for higher level math.

About Jenna
I am a performer, teacher, and student. While working towards a Masters in Performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Burt Hara at Cal State Fullerton, I have subbed with local orchestras as well as participated in recording projects in Orange County. At the University, I perform with the wind symphony, orchestra, and new music ensemble.

When I was a child, my uncle, a doctor for the CDC in Atlanta, was visiting for Christmas. I only saw him once a year, and this year he gave me a pink plastic recorder. After becoming immediately obsessed with the small instrument, I begged my parents for lessons. “Lessons on the recorder?” they laughed. Every Christmas, my uncle would bring a duet book, and we would play duets on recorder. Finally, in third grade, my parents started me on piano and the next year, I began private lessons on
clarinet.

I found my passion for playing at a young age. I believe that although it is important to build good technique, practice habits, and musicality, it is also important to keep the passion and joy that playing music can bring us. As I grow as a person and a musician, I always try to remember what brought me to music in the first place: playing and enjoying music with my friends and peers.

Aside from performance, I discovered my passion for teaching as I started working with students in private lessons and working as a camp counselor at a woodwind camp. I was invited to sub with the Auburn Symphony and was excited to perform Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 2 beside my mentor and friend, Jennifer Nelson. Today, I am indebted to the inspiration my uncle gave me as a child and all my teachers for my opportunity to pursue a Masters of Music in Clarinet Performance at Cal State Fullerton.

Do you feel like you are speaking another language when you are trying to learn math? Mathematics can be quite difficult to grasp, but with the proper help it can come quite easily. I am a passionate, hard-working individual who truly cares about knowledge and teaching others about the material that I have learned. I have found ways to help children and young adults better comprehend mathematics by taking a caring and individualized approach to tutoring. I will provide rationales for how to solve problems, which helps the individual learn instead of regurgitate information.

About Jonathan
Hi! My name is Jonathan and I thoroughly enjoy helping others, especially with learning about different subjects and themselves! Additionally, I want to help people learn how to best study based off of their personality. I am passionate about several topics, including mathematics! I used to tutor individuals as a side job in college, specifically with writing, mathematics, and science. More recently, I have been working as a therapist and l can provide the same safe, warm, and therapeutic environment to our study sessions.

I believe the most important principle in learning anything, especially mathematics, is having a solid foundation and strong understanding of underlying concepts. I feel it's important to not only show useful tips and tricks to figuring problems out, but also to teach why exactly those tricks work and how to apply them to other problems. I've been teaching arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus to students from 3rd grade to college levels for a year now. I always look forward to not only teaching the student, but also learning from the experience myself.

About Blake
I'm a physics major and am aspiring to become an educator. I spend my free time programming physics simulations and working on math puzzles. I've been tutoring various subjects including math, physics, and chemistry for the past year.

I believe that the most important principle in learning anything is a strong understanding of the concepts and tools used to solve problems within the field. Since these are cumulative subjects, a concrete foundation allows students to truly prosper and apply their skills to any topics they encounter.
Math is one of my strongest passions and I am always eager to share it with others.

As member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, I'm expected to maintain high academic performance. This motivated me to hold my grades well above the criteria required to be on the President's Honor List.

Aside from Math an
d Physics, my hobbies include rock climbing, programming, playing shogi (Japanese chess), and crafting violins and surfboards.
