Blues are the roots, the rest are the fruits

About Jonathan
Hi, Jonathan here... but you can call me Johnny.

And I'm a Guitar teacher specializing in blues and rock--My blues influence can be heard when I play jazz, soul and funk, so people have told me that I play so passionately.

"the blues are the roots, the rest are the fruits"

I am also a multi-instrumentalist. Piano was my first instrument before I learned how to play the guitar, and I believe this has helped me in my approach to understanding music.

I believe having this broad perspective enables me to teach ANY student, and make them the best musician they can be.

Played at the house of blues multiple times (as a jazz combo, solo blues artist), and have experience playing blues guitar in rock/blues bands and jazz band at my high school

About Kory
Hi, my name is Kory, and I am currently an under graduate at Cal Poly Pomona studying Music and Business.

I have been playing guitar for over 10 years, and have taught guitar to dozens of students over the last 4-5 years. I also study recording and production, and have played in Cal Poly's Jazz Combo, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and Concert Choir (For more specific info, you can check out the "experience" section of my page).

In addition, I song-write and record music with my band, "Search For Delicious," a group of close friends from High School. You can check us out on Facebook and Bandcamp, and in the videos below.

My personal philosophy to teaching is that every student is a unique individual. I always start by connecting with the student, and figuring out what interests/goals they have in mind. Then I craft a lesson plan that wil
l help them achieve their goals, and work with their strengths and weaknesses. I practice patience and friendliness, and always do my best to inspire, motivate, and teach hard work/perseverance.

Teaching and music are both passions that I put my all into. I have experience teaching many individuals of a wide range of ages, sexes, backgrounds, and musical experience, and I can guarantee, whether you're a beginner, or a very experienced player, you will see results

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide an acoustic guitar, picks, a chord, and an amp. I expect the student to have either an acoustic or electric guitar to be able to practice with, but if they don't I can cover him/her.

*** Specialties ***
Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Singing, Songwriting, Recording, Music Theory, Ear Training, Logic Pro X

Almost all forms popular music in America got it's start in the blues. Musical genres such as both jazz and rock have their roots deeply in the blues. Some blues songs, such as Stormy Monday by T. Bone Walker were using basic blues chord patterns, but then on the 6th measure of each verse, T Bone would throw in a standard jazz chord progression. G9, Am7, Bm7, Bb13, Am7, D7b9, G9, followed by C9 back to the G9 and then the verse would end on a dominant 5th chord with a #9th, [D7#9]. This is where the 2 genres sometimes started to really mix with each other. Blues is the foundation where this all began. Rock and roll on the other hand, stayed closer to older and simpler blues chord progressions and licks, but played the tempos far quicker than a blues song would play, and the rhythm section would also play a lot more aggressively than a blues band would. Early rock and roll stayed very close to the original and more simple chord progressions of the earlier blues songs.

Hi. I left a prior review under acoustic guitar. Jeff teaches basically anything with strings and frets: Acoustic and Electric guitar and bass, in Rock, pop, Jazz, blues - you name it. Throw in Mandolin and Ukulele. I started playing guitar over 50 years ago - self taught with years of inactivity. When I retired 3 years ago or so my wife set me up for guitar lessons from Take Lessons, which led to Jeff. He was close by in Pasadena. He started with my flimsy knowledge of a few chords and moved along as I learned. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of all sorts of music, and can lead you down whatever path you chose. I started with basic rhythm guitar, classic rock, R & B, and at this point starting to work on the blues. I look forward to my weekly meetings with Jeff and highly recommend him.

One of the biggest musical influences in my life is Jeff Stetson! His style of teaching and lessons are tools I have used throughout my life. I studied with Jeff as a complete beginner and returned to him years later while I was in college for more in-depth advanced lessons. I can not recommend him strongly enough - he is the BEST teacher you can have! I have a degree in Music and Jeff is a huge reason why. You can’t go wrong with Jeff!

I started with Jeff in 1976 after becoming frustrated with my teacher who only taught the Carol Kaye method. Jeff was a breath of fresh air with his encouraging me to perfect my basic skills and expand the genres of music I listened to and played. After a few months he understood exactly the way I learned and my lessons became focused on my personal progression that was always changing at that age of my life.

What remained a constant during my years of lessons was Jeff’s caring nature, commitment to better my skills, understanding reading music, theory, and playing by ear. These skills he imparted to me continue today, over 40 years later.

Thank you Jeff!

About Eric
MUSIC!
I think music is the most beautiful thing in the world, so lets take time to learn and play music together.
I have been playing the drums for over sixteen years, and been in over fifteen bands in the course of that time. I have a degree in Music from the Berklee College of Music were I studied music theory and focused on Music Production and Engineering. I have been playing Piano, Bass, and Guitar for about ten years in addition to the drums, and have been recorded in sessions on each. I have a deep passion for synthesizers and electronic music, so lets make some bleeps and bloops together.

I am extremely kind, friendly, and funny so lessons with me are very relaxed and have an easy to learn environment. However I am very passionate about teaching to fit student needs; so if a student likes deadlines and homework, if that is w
hat will help them learn the best, then that is how I will teach.
Lets make some sweet music together!!

I play guitar since I am 10 years old and I have never been into a music school. My guitar teacher was certificated by some jazz school and public music school so I know the theory but it is not necessary the most important step especially when you begin. You need to enjoy your time with your guitar and that is my goal for you.
My philosophy of teaching will be to fit you and your expectations about the instrument to always have pleasure when you play so having the envy to pursue.

About Florian
I am a french guitarist, bassist, drummer, pianist, singer, didgeridoo player, composer and sound engineer. I am certified by ESRA-ISTS in France that is a school for audiovisual and sound. My own music is more blues, rock, funk, world, hip hop but when I do produce for others it can be jazz or orchestral too.

Guitar and bassist students can expect to have the same kind of lessons I had. I will focus on your expectations, your goals and we will work mostly around music that you do like or want to work on.

For sound engineering I do have a ProTools 12HD user level certified by Avid. I can teach you also Logic Pro. We will discover the soft and their own logic to record, edit, mix, produce, create sounds.

For french students, I am a native french from Paris. I have moved in the USA almost 2 years ago and I am according to my friends here
very good with English. Same things than for the others, we will move at your rhythm because every student is special and develop her/his skills at her/his own time. We will work with written part and phonetically part. As you may know Paris, as a big city, doesn't have to much accent so it will be the more neutral french accent that you can find.

I started playing guitar when I was only 13 years old, I'm now 28. When I was 13, I took for granted the importance of a teacher and I learned things based on short-term, little wins (learning that new Green Day song for a show). I never actually took the time to learn how to truly play the guitar and understand the WHY or to hone fundamental skills, spot bad posture and technique, or explain how songs are melodies are created. When I was 23, I picked up the guitar again (after putting it all throughout college and late high school), and completely relearned how to play as a mature adult. I took the hard time to relearn techniques, understand theory, break free from bad habits and I've become a much, much better guitarist as a result. I understand what it's like to WANT

About Patrick
I'll never forget the first time I received my very own guitar. It was a red Fender Squier stratocaster and I was just 13 years old. I remember plugging into my little amp and trying it out. I knew nothing about guitar, all I knew was I wanted to sound like Jimi Hendrix.

I think it was probably day 3 when I had a breakdown and ran downstairs to my mother sobbing because I didn't think I'd ever be able to play guitar and that I made a mistake.

But there's a lesson here, potential student. Guitar is HARD. Learning how to play a guitar takes a lot of patience, time, repetition and most importantly, the right attitude. 15 years later and here I am, teaching others how to play. I've been through the learning process and I know how frustrating music can be. But it's also incredibly fun and there aren't enough instructors out there that
make it that way.

If you want to play anything from screaming, roaring blues licks to melodic Pink Floyd tonal adventures I can help get you there the right way. If you just want to learn how to play a couple chords, not a problem.

I understand what it's like to WANT to sound like the John Mayers of the world and what it's like to lack patience. But there are ways around this and it's all about how you teach. Every young kid picks up the guitar because they want to sound like SOMEONE. But there's a path to getting there and there aren't enough guitar teachers that know how to communicate that and make it fun for their subjects. The most important parts of understanding guitar fundamentals are completely top of mind for me and I believe one of my biggest strengths as an individual is turning complex concepts into bite-sized, relatable things.

I'm an entrepreneur that has started my own business and this is what I do because I'm passionate about music.
