I can help beginners get started or coach advanced students who are preparing for auditions.
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.
Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.
He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.
Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.
*** Lesson Details *** My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.
I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.
For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.
My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.
Thomas is honestly an amazing musician and teacher. He was really patient with me. Despite having to deal with major timezone differences (as I live in Myanmar), he took the time to figure it out. Also, he helped me figure out the stuff it took me months to figure out. He also really knows what he's doing. I learned so much in that hour of practice. 10/10 would recommend him.

Fabulous! What a great teacher! And SO KNOWLEDGEABLE about all kinds of music! THANKS! looking forward to all my lessons!
Learn about rhythm, melody, harmony, and dynamics, and how they apply to the french horn. Explore the range of your instrument through various scales. Build solid skills through understanding the mechanics of how your body and instrument work together.
*Disclaimer* I'm currently not taking beginner students on voice/singing, guitar, bass, drums, piano, and ukulele. I highly recommend my studio partners Melissa though. Please check out her profile:
I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.
Philosophy of Learning
Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations. It's really important to know though that everyone makes their own experience. The process of learning music involves you learning as much about your own mind and body as it does any external concepts, so please keep in mind only you can move yourself forward.
I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.
I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!) Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.
Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype. (*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)
*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
My studio is equipped with:
*A P.A. System
*Vocal and instrument microphones
*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc
*Two guitar amps and a bass amp
*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set
*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set
*An electric piano console and Yamaha organ
*A MicroKorg Synthesizer
*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, Saxophone, and Flute
*An extensive physical and virtual music library
*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to
*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype
Jesse has given directions on how to successfully become a better musician. His approach and explanation on musical theories was much more understandable than what I was previously reading. Overall, I found the lessons to be very usefull.

For my Trumpet Students I use Herbert L. Clarke Technical Studies Book to help improve aerobic endurance, technical and finger velocity as well as production of good tone quality. I will also use the Earl Irons Group of 27 exercises as well as the Max Schlossberg Method to help improve air flow, breathing control and fluidity of sound throughout all registers. I also use the J. B. Arban's Conservatory method for other techniques including scales, double and triple tonguing, intervals as well as duets and solo repertoire. For jazz minded students I will start with basic fundamentals of improvisation including melodic improv, Blues forms and blues scales as well as reading through chord changes and playing in several modes and other scales used in jazz.

Focus for French Horn students will be mainly on control of partials and tuning techniques.
For my Voice students I will start with good breathing technique and warm up exercises designed to get the vocal chords warmed up and get all the other muscles relaxed in order to produce great tone quality. Focus will be on intonation, and learning to use the air and support to extend the vocalists range higher and lower as well as gain power and confidence in singing. Each Vocal student will have a piece to practice or will bring a piece of their choosing in that they would like to learn and this will be used to apply the techniques learned at the beginning of lessons. Styles of singing that I sing and can teach are Classical, Jazz, Big Band and Standards, Oldies, Pop, Country, Soul, Rock, R&B, Christian Rock and Church Music and also harmonizing like in a duet style or choir/vocal ensemble setting. I am a classically trained musician on Trumpet, French Horn and Voice and reading music, articulations, dynamics and learning musical forms is an essential part to any performers success. I also have studied various jazz styles and improvisational techniques as well. I want to teach students the basics of good musicianship and help them to excel in learning, practicing and performing in their own selected styles of music, whether its classical music, or jazz/rock/pop/country and any other styles students are interested in.
For Academic students who need tutoring I have a very extensive background in history, specifically focusing on US History, Military History, and the study of different eras including major war eras. Academic tutoring can be geared towards the understanding, comprehension and critical thinking understanding of the subject matter, as well as research, essay writing, as well as public speaking and project presentation.
For Tennis Students, I focus on the basics from footwork, to basic swing mechanics as well as strategy. Tennis lessons can be geared to develop specific areas of the game of tennis, or an overall game improvement whether for those who want to be competitive, or just enjoy a friendly game. I am also willing to do group lessons of up to 4-5 players to enhance a group learning environment as well as combining the skills from each player to enhance the other and create a fun learning environment on the tennis court. *** Studio Equipment ***

Hiring J.R. has been an incredibly uplifting, fun, and educational experience. A far better experience than I could have asked or hoped for. I’m learning! And excited for the progress, which does take an investment of practice, energy & time. He is extremely patient & flexible with how to cope with my needs (when possible) and super supportive: I’m almost 50 and paralyzed.
As corny as this sounds I’ve never known anyone with such a broad overall knowledge, experience and wisdom about music and instruments. If I have a question about my piano playing, or virtually any music question, he either has the answer or helps me find it if he doesn’t.
He is extremely knowledgeable and respectful and has more than earned my respect and gratitude.
Hiring him is one of the best choices I’ve ever made. The only regret I have is that I didn’t hire him sooner.

Love my 1st lesson. I learned so much in one day. Definitely looking forward to my next lesson.
July 2, 2018
I had an instructor prior to him for nearly a year. I hired JR because after that time I didn’t even learn how to read music. I learned more today from JR than the entire time I had my previous instructor. JR is detailed and patient for an old, inexperienced fart like me. Thank you, JR!

As others have stated Karl is very patient with a new learner. His explanations are thorough and understandable. I make progress from lesson to lesson (for the most part) and look forward to the next lesson.
I use a variety of materials to best fit what the student needs and would like to get out of taking lessons. I enjoy teaching and playing music and I try to make sure my students have fun as well!
Hello! My name is Phillip M. and I have been playing the Horn for 15 years now. I started back in elementary school and haven't looked back since. After high school, I went to Central Michigan University where I earned my Bachelor of Music in Horn Performance while studying under Dr. Bruce Bonnell. While I was at CMU, I performed with the Symphony Band, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Marching Band, Horn Choir, and a Horn Quartet. I then went to Western Illinois University where I studied under Dr. Randall Faust and earned my Masters in Horn Performance. While at WIU I performed with the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Brass Ensemble, and Horn Ensemble. I also played with several local organizations while at WIU including the Quincy Symphony Orchestra, Monmouth Civic Orchestra, Quincy Community Theatre, and
the Knox-Galesburg Symphony. I also have solo experience and have put on a junior recital, senior recital, two graduate recitals, and I performed the Hindemith Horn Sonata with the WIU Symphony Orchestra as a Concerto Competition winner as well as participate in many horn studio recitals during my college career. I am now living in Rochester Hills where I have been teaching private lessons, teaching Horn sectionals to local schools, and performing in several local orchestras including the Oakland Symphony Orchestra and Macomb Symphony Orchestra. I am willing and happy to teach all levels of musicians and I hope you consider me if you are interested.
Great first lesson with Phillip! Looking forward to many more.

Phillip was on time and professional, introduced himself and coordinated with us appropriately. His first lesson made our twelve-year-old feel comfortable and she really got a kick out of when he asked her what she thought SHE needed to work on. He did a wonderful job expressing her creative outlet and was very comfortable in the mechanics of the French horne. Would recommend any time!
I have been playing the Horn for the past 15 years, so I bring years of dedicated experience to my students. Through my past instructors as well as other professional development opportunities, I have learned many techniques and ideas that I pass on to my students. I create my lessons based on each student's personal needs and goals so they can get the most out of every lesson.
I am a very dedicated educator with experience teaching private lessons since 2013. I graduated from Rutgers University with a duel degree in Music Education and French Horn Performance, and I am currently completing my Master of Music degree in French Horn Performance at New York University where I study with the acting Associate Principal Horn of the New York Philharmonic, Leelanee Sterrett.
I am currently the brass instructor at the lesson studio Music Forever in Edison, New Jersey. I also have experience working in various public schools including Readington Middle School, Holland Brook Elementary School, PS3 Charrette School, and Perth Amboy High School. In addition, I have coached chamber music through the Rutgers Extension Division.
As a performer, I have played in various orchestras, bands, and other various chamber groups.
As a co-founder of Prime Winds, a woodwind quintet, and Quartado, a horn quartet, I understand the organizational skills it takes to network and manage an ensemble. I was also the winner of the NYU Concerto Competition, and I will be playing Anthony DiLorenzo's concerto "Phoenix" this coming October with the New York University Orchestra.
I strongly believe that student centered learning is essential for successful student growth. I adapt my lessons to specific student learning needs based on my assessment of their abilities and interests. It is important to me that my students learn in a way that is best for them, and that they are going over material that will help them reach their goals. In addition to teaching my students how to play with great technique and a beautiful sound, I teach them what it means to be a musician in the 21st century. It is important to me that my students can understand how to use what they are learning about in real life settings outside of the practice room. I push my students to be excellent musicians as well as life time learners.
Kevin is a very passionate teacher who is dedicated to music with excellent teaching skills. He is being teaching my daughter for the past 1 year and I have seen my daughter progressed good at playing French Horn.

Kevin is a really great French Horn teacher & musician! He also has helped me a lot with piano. I’ve been studying with Kevin for 3 years& I got first chair at my school because of him.

Kevin is an excellent teacher! My daughter Erica struggled in her band class, and she considered quitting. Once she started lessons however, she really progressed and now loves playing!

Payton is an guitarist, French hornist, composer, and educator living in Brooklyn, NY. Payton’s music is rooted in everything from jazz, rock, classical, and pop. He has had the opportunity to perform in the Burlington Jazz Festival, Flynnspace, as well as several venues in New York City. Payton is a graduate of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.
Payton has done a great job helping me grasp the material. He knows how to pinpoint what is giving you trouble and how to effectively solve it. Overall my playing has greatly improved since taking lessons with him and I would highly recommend.

"Victoria helps with technique, and she makes me feel like I'm part of the community of horn players."
"Mr Davis has been great! He’s very patient, encouraging and helpful!"
"Mr. Olivier was very professional and well prepared. He gave my son great advice and took time to make sure he was comfortable. Very Knowledgeable."
"11 year old daughter loved working with Victoria and is looking forward to her next lesson"
"My son adores James! This young man is polite, funny and keeps Logan interested in playing the French Horn. We moved here recently from California and dis
covered that the school that my son would be going to does not offer a string program which is what he plays so he decided to pick up French Horn instead. Another student at the school had been trying to help teach him but she wasn't a very good tutor and he was getting frustrated. After just one lesson my son is feeling more confident in his abilities and learning the right technique to play the French Horn to make him successful. I also like that not only does James teach how to play the Horn, he also gets him interested in learning about others who play and just music in general. Amazing teacher A+++"
"Ellie is one of my biggest inspirations as both a horn player and musician and has a great mind and heart. She is patient, loving, intelligent, and a very

"Nathan is great. Very conscientious and patient."
"We enjoy Amy and everything she has to offer us."
